Does Highway 6 run both ways in Oxford, too?

Thanks for posting.

Sorry, probably should have been a bit more specific. Most people come to Oxford by traveling east on Highway 6 from its intersection with I-55 at Batesville. The shortcut directions are for coming in to Oxford eastbound on Highway 6.

Ha, I wondered if someone would make the Hwy 6 joke.

I like a football guy who recommends a bookstore and an author's house. Classy.

Reb,

One last question and it is a bit repetitive. So if we arrive around 9 am do you think we would find a place along Sorrority row and is that the best option?

Thanks so much for all the great information!

Maybe so. That's pretty early, but parking is limited there. About a block west, there is a large parking lot almost in a circle between several dorms, including Crosby and Hefley. Get there early enough and you might get one of these spots. That early, you should find a spot somewhere decent on campus fairly easily I would think.

Awesome info for the people coming into town.1 more beer stop is any of the gas stations on hwy 7 north of Oxford from Holly Springs in marshall county and the beer is cold. The last beer store on number 7 is Betty Davis store right before the big iron bridge. And for the guy asking about the hospitality these ole miss people are very friendly and the eye candy is UNREAl!I can't wait to see the aggies play since I am stuck here in MS,from a missplaced texan.

What's the best way to get involved in a tailgate?

We may not make it there in time to reserve one for ourselves. Should we bring an ice chest or a couple bottles town there and just walk around?

Do people invite wandering Texans into their tailgates?

What's the best way to find a good spot to have a couple drinks and soak in the atmosphere prior to kickoff?

Rebel, thanks for such great information!

The reference that they were getting is an Aggie culture joke. The main HWY of the Bryan-College Station area (area where A&M is located) is also Hwy 6.

The reference " highway 6 runs both ways" can be roughly translated as "the same road that takes you
to A&M can take you right back out." Usually used as an answer to people who complain about the culture or deep traditions of A&M. Another way to say: A&M is how we like it and we are not going to change just because you don't like it.

Thanks, cj774. After I posted that reply, I figured out that there must be some kind of Aggie reference about Highway 6.

As you can imagine, Ole Miss folks are great respecters of tradition.

I would think you'd probably get some invites. If I was just walking in completely gear-less, I'd probably try to find a setup where some A&M folks are right next to some Ole Miss folks. There'll be enough interaction there you'll probably blend right in.

If you don't have a spot claimed by Friday night, you're pretty unlikely to get a spot on the Grove. That doesn't mean that you can't tailgate somewhere else on campus; anywhere that's green is pretty much fair game.

When are you planning to make it? Knowing that might help me give you better advice on what your options are.

Ironically, no, but there is a knock-off called Huddle House. There's also an IHOP.

The nearest Awful Waffle is at Batesville, about 25 miles away.

Nice to see another Central Arkansas guy, btw.

Ajax is so killer; can't recommend it high enough. Chicken and dumplings are to die for. Never had a bad meal there. Always a must-stop for me.

My first time in Oxford, my buddy who went to Ole Miss took me there. The next year I went back up for the South Carolina game. My only request was that we have dinner at Ajax after the game. That place is greatness.

I think so. When leaving the Square, take Jackson Avenue heading back to campus (the road leading out from the northwest corner of the Square). Head down this road until you reach Rebel Drive, then turn left into campus.

Don't try to go down University. It'll be shut off in front of campus and jammed with traffic. If for some reason you need to be on the south side of campus (the side by the bypass), leave the Square going south on Lamar, then turn right onto Old Taylor Road.

Going to Rowan Oak is like stepping back into pre-Civil War. Even the slave quarters are still preserved there. You can see the narrow shelf that Faulkner added to his bookshelves to hold his shotgun shells - runs around the room. You can also see where he diagrammed the plot of one of his novels all over the wall. Only modern thing on the property is the handicap ramp.

Literature or history lovers shouldn't miss this place.

Few things to add from our earlier trip when Texas played:

Beer is "technically" illegal in the Grove so don't "technically" get caught.

Cops were pouring out Texas fans beer left and right who were walking arounf with cans/bottles or clear cups. Just get a large opaque cup like all the locals and zero issues.

Coolers - any unattended cooler is grounds for a search. Every cooler there had locks on them that were left at the tents during the game.

Food - I would guestimate that 8/10 tents either had their fare catered in or prepared in advance and brought in. Each tent was like a little mini-reception. Some had white linen table clothes and even a few chandeliers. Only smoking/grilling was outside of the Grove near the parking lots or on your way to the stadium.

Cell phone coverage is basically worthless and the tents are nestled up one next to another - so to get from one to another you have to go through them, not around...makes it more of a challenge meeting and coordinating with others.
