After watching your band play Dixie you are good folks. We Aggies are glad to be in the SEC with fine Southern Gentlemen and Ladies.

To put in in language of 1960's Highway 6 runs both ways and if you don't like it get your A$$ on it and leave A&M.

Curious, how does one lock a regular old cooler?

You don't - so stock up a crap-ton of liquor and drink whatever beer you have before you leave it unattended.

And even when being trasported, pack the bottom with beer, cover with ice and bottled water, etc as many were being searched as they moved around getting to tailgating spots.

Cops were pretty cool - just don't be overt about everything and you'll be fine.

What if your carrying a whiskey bottle or case of beer to put into a cooler at someones tailgate, will you get in trouble if your walking through the grove with it?

Thanks again. Will prob be in the grove by 2 on Sat. What's best way to get involved in a tailgate then? I'll have I've chest with beverages and cups.

I'd find where an A&M tailgate is bumped right up against an Ole Miss tailgate.

so carrying around a small cooler and drinking from a glass is not ok?

Open containers are a problem. Red solo cup is the way to go.

quote:

Coolers - any unattended cooler is grounds for a search. Every cooler there had locks on them that were left at the tents during the game.

I've never had my cooler messed with, but I wouldn't just leave a cooler laying around in the open. Ask a tailgate if they'd mind your keeping your cooler there. Most probably won't mind at all.

quote:

Cell phone coverage is basically worthless and the tents are nestled up one next to another - so to get from one to another you have to go through them, not around...makes it more of a challenge meeting and coordinating with others.

Cellphone service can be tough, since the lines are sure to be jammed with calls. Use text messages.

One option for find other people using limited service in the Grove is to use the Maps app on the iPhone. Drop a pin on your current location, then share that location with the person you're trying to meet. They should be able to use their Maps app to guide them to the location.

I'm coming in from Memphis Saturday straight down interstate 55 and then across to Oxford what's the best way to go to get to the parking your talking about

I'd discourage that. Put it in a paper bag or something. The cops are very lenient, but they're not going to be for someone swinging around a liter of Jack.

@Aggie_3:

Take I-55 to Batesville, then turn east onto Highway 6. Just before you get to Oxford, turn left off of the bypass into the Wellsgate subdivision. Can't miss it--big gate, big sign that says Wellsgate. When you turn in, you'll be on East Wellsgate. Turn right onto Canvasback. Canvasback turns into Anderson Road. Stay on Anderson Road until it ends at Jackson Avenue. You'll cut off all of the gameday traffic in town.

Turn left onto Jackson, but don't enter the campus until you get to Rebel Drive (about three lights down). Turn right onto Rebel Drive and go up the hill, start looking for parking spaces. You won't be too far from the Grove, Circle, Union or stadium. When you get ready to leave, go back the way you came. You need to be there at least 2 hrs before kickoff to make getting a spot possible. The parking's free.

Ok sweet for some reason on my map it was listed as 278 not highway 6
NaturalStateReb
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think it's recently been resdesignated. US278 used to end at Pontotoc, which is a few miles east of Oxford.

If you want to take the scenic route while avoiding some of the game day traffic, get off I-55 at Sardis and take Highway 315 south. You'll go over the dam at Sardis Lake and intersect with Highway 6/US278 about 10 miles west of Oxford. The convenience store at this intersection--known as Crossroads by the locals--is the last stop for cold beer to go if you're coming into Oxford from the west.

I get that. What I'm asking is, are you allowed to carry your cooler with you? How would you get it from your car to the tailgate if you cant?

I'd say yes, as long as you're heading to a destination. You just can't drag it around behind you everywhere you go.

NaturalStateReb,

I'm a little confused about RV parking.

Is this lot just a daily fee/first come/first served lot?

@ChipFTAC01:

It's my understanding that the lot you're pointing out is available only by the season with no hookups ($1,200! WTF?). I've only taken my camper down there once, and I stayed at John W. Kyle State Park.

According to the UMAA Foundation, they have pay-as-you-go parking in two locations: the Oxford Mall and a parking lot off of Intramural Drive across from Jackson Avenue. Neither has hookups. The mall lot costs $50/nt + $15 for trailing car, but the intramural lot may be free. I don't know anything about the intramural lot, but if it is where they say it is, it isn't that close to campus. The intramural lot opens at 5PM on Friday.

I did find something about the Whirlpool site that aremd noted earlier. If it's still going, it's across Highway 6 from campus near Coliseum Drive. Same deal as the mall: pay as you go, $50/nt, no hookups.

Call 662-915-2131 (UMAA Foundation) for reservations, if any are available.

In case you've parked at the Square and want to go to the Grove, or vice versa, or you've just been overserved, Oxford runs shuttle buses through the city on gameday. Parking is free, but the shuttle costs $5. The service starts 3 hours before kickoff and ends 2 hours after the game is over. In addition to the shuttles, they've also got a double decker bus like in London--if the weather is nice, riding on the top is a fun, unique way to see the town. Here are the stops and contact info:

Pick up / parking locations for the shuttle are:
Central Middle School
499 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive
GPS: 34.371754,-89.523776
City of Oxford Shuttle Information, www.oxfordms.net or 662-232-2306

Double Decker Bus Shuttle
Service times: Starts 3 hours prior to kickoff. The bus does not run during or after
the game.

Pick up: Double Decker buses depart from City Hall in front of the red phone
booth and go to the Grove. Buses run about every 20 minutes depending on
traffic. It's about a mile to walk back to the Square from the Grove.

Another shuttle runs from here if you're not going to the Square but can't find a parking place near campus:

Oxford Activities Center
400 Price Street
GPS: 34.375721,-89.525921

Just got an email from UMAA saying that the reserved RV spots are sold out. What's available are spots on a first-come, first-served basis at the Intramural Road and Whirlpool sites.

A few more dining/drinking options:

McEwans--Oxford version of a Memphis favorite. One of Oxford's more upscale eateries. Expensive, but rewarding for foodies. Takes reservations online. http://mcewensoxford.com/

Handy Andy Grocery--if you want some real local flavor, stop in here for the great BBQ or a good burger. It's both a market and a small restaurant. This place only takes cash--no cards. No webpage, but here's the Urbanspoon rundown on it. http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/211/24211/Mississippi/Oxford-restaurants

Big Bad Breakfast--delicious breakfast joint from the City Grocery family of restaurants. Prices are decent, and BBB offers some unique breakfast choices alongside the usual suspects. http://citygroceryonline.com/restaurant.php?bbb

The Blind Pig Pub--located on the Square, has great food, atmosphere, and service at affordable prices. Usually has live music at night. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/211/1423609/restaurant/Mississippi/The-Blind-Pig-Pub-And-Deli-Oxford

Coop De Ville--Oxford's other chicken shack; I actually like it better than Abner's, although Abner's is better known. They used to do delivery, I assume they still do. Why can't every town have fried chicken delivery? This is near the mall at the west gate of the Ole Miss campus. Here's a menu: http://www.allmenus.com/ms/hickory-flat/284053-the-coop-de-ville/menu/

Irie on the Square--Cajun place on the Square, with the only salad bar in the Square area. A bit expensive, but one of the best beer selections in town for those who don't enjoy a good import from Missouri like me. http://irieonthesquare.com/

Lenora's--Mediterranean fare about a block north of the Square in a pretty cool new area. Pricey, a bit fru-fru for my taste, but if you're looking for an upscale meal and can't get a reservation at City Grocery or McEwens, this will be a nice option. http://www.lenorasdining.com/

The Char Grille--Steak house just across the street from Coop DeVille on Jackson Avenue near the mall and west gate of Ole Miss. A good option if you're looking for a nice meal without battling the crowds at the Square. You can always head to the Square later for a drink. http://steakhouseoxford.com/

Will we be able to park anywhere on campus... or do we just stay to the lots that appear to be on either side of Rebel Drive.

Can we move further into Campus...say around Student Union Drive or Women's Terrace, etc.

In other words can we park anywhere there is a spot or are we limited to where we can park. I would take it if not allowed to park in certain parking lots it would be clearly marked.

Thanks for the info.

The center of campus is walking only, so don't expect lots of parking there. Parking should be allowed at Women's Terrace, but you won't be able to park along the street on Student Union east of the intersection of Student Union/Women's Terrace W. There is a small lot at the union, but it's permit parking. There are some lots on Sorority Row, but if you're planning to park at either Women's Terrace or Sorority Row, be prepared to be there very early. If you've got two cars, one plan could be to leave one and carpool back after unloading in the Grove on Friday night.

The walk from the Rebel Drive area is an easy one. It's only about 1/4 mile from the intersection of Rebel Dr/Student Union to the Grove. It's mostly level other than a small uphill grade at the Union/Grove.

Another parking option in the Women's Terrace/Student Union area is a small parking lot behind Stewart Hall where West Terrace dead ends. The turn is just west of the Student Union/Women's Terrace W intersection. This parking lot is almost in a pit, so occasionally you can luck out and park down here. Be warned, though: it's a steep walk out. If you're carrying anything with any weight, you'll be sweating gravy by the time you get back to the top.

There are also several parking lots along Faculty Row. You'd reach these via Jackson Avenue.

I'm not sure how late they stay open. At least until 1AM.

The Grove opens at 9PM on Friday and closes at midnight Saturday. There'll be a lot of setting up Friday, but not many people are going to hang around partying. It's mostly just setup.
