I have seen posts on here over the years about how some of you have attended A&M games home and away for many years. Some even into the "40 year" timeframe. I don't see how in the world you are able to endure such punishment. I am impressed but wouldn't change places with you.

Can you imagine the time value of money return they would have received over 40 years on the money they invested in tickets and travel? They could probably all be independently wealthy

I'm one of the 40 year types. And to be honest at this point, while I still get pissed on occasion, the vast majority of time I find the whole **** show to be rather humorous. Towards the end of the game last night I was actually laughing at what was taking place on the field. And watching Elko waddle up and down the sideline, clearly befuddled at once again being out coached, was just the cherry on top.
Oh, and him belching into the microphone during the post game presser...... god, that was true perfection at what we are. A pathetic belch of a football program.

Because early on at A&M I learned that Aggie football isn't about wins and losses. It's about the friends you make to join you in this painful journey.

I buy a scalped ticket once a year to see a game. Thats my investment in this program. And thats actually more about going to CS to see my folks who live there. So all told I might waste $150 a year on this crap with the ticket and concessions. Understood. I'm talking about the folks who have only missed a few (less than 4 of 5) games, home or away for the past 40 years.
You can enjoy the games and experiences without getting emotionally wrecked over losses.
I am one of the 40+ years also. I view Aggie athletics as entertainment after all of these years. Just like a bad movie or tv show, I don't go back and rewatch terrible games. I just move on to the next game with it having no affect on my life. I became this way after the Fran years.

I'm only half that in years, and just watch every game on TV with the exception of a home game every season or so.
And admittedly after the game last night I questioned my sanity and why I continue to put myself through this heartache. But I guess that's what comes with true fandom of most any team.

I have been a lifelong Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers fan even when the Mavs only won 10-15 games a year. Being a fan of these teams has also taught me a lot of patience.

And being a true fan has gotten you what exactly?
Because many of us older folks still hold on to this nostalgic view of college football where we felt, for the most part, that the players were Aggies, wanted to be Aggies, and wanted to represent the University to the best of their ability. And if they were going to be out there every game, every year we would too. Even if many times the results were not the best.
Obviously if that view of the college football world ever really existed it doesn't now. In the next generation of full pay to play, binding contracts and an NBA like B league for the NFL this antiquated view will fully go the way of the dinosaur.

He won the conference three times, and that's significant, but his overall record against ranked teams was pretty bad and no major program would ever hold up a coach who won a total of two bowl games, against two 8-4 teams, as some sort of legend the way A&M does. There wasn't a single victory (or even loss) of any real national note. The fact that his record is so revered here is only more damning to how things have been overall. It's like being 5'6" in a room full of 5'2" guys.
When you all started buying in the mid-80s was the most successful time in Aggie football thanks to Jackie and RC.
Everything since then has been tits up and not in a Rachel Brosnahan/The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel sense.

When I went to TAM we won a few more than we lost but Kyle Field was still rockin. We had a blast at midnight yell and at the game. Always enjoyed hearing and watching the FTAB. The game experience was the traditions and being with my close Aggie buddies and having a good time at the game and watching us play … win or lose.
We cherished those times because Vietnam was in full swing and lots of Ags were going over there and there was a thing called a draft. Was not unusual to see someones name on Sully for Silver taps that you might have known that was not making it back.

RC was 3-8 in bowls. Was under .400 against top 25 teams and under .300 against top 10 teams. So, in other words the "Golden Era" of A&M football was actually the "Pale Yellow Era". Just further proof we are, and always have been, a middling slightly above average program.
He had one of the highest total winning percentages of coaches across the country at that time. He cleaned up a program that was in the crapper and brought some integrity to the table compared to the other SWC coaches of the time as well. He put multiple players in the NFL that did very well.

To say the mid-80s was the most successful period in the modern era is accurate, and there was stuff worth celebrating, but the constant insistence by some that A&M was some kind of national power at that time is laughable. And the more it's insisted the funnier it gets. In seven years Sherrill beat two top ten teams, #9 Arkansas and #10 Washington. He won all of two bowl games, against 8-4 teams, bowl games in which neither team even entered the games in the top ten. Not one top 5 finish.
It's the kind of stretch that coaches get fired for at actual national powers. Every time someone holds him up as a legend it's like hearing some goober going to a Ferrari and Lamborghini car show and wanting to push into every conversation to tell people about how cool the old Camaro was that they used to have. Peaking by going 10-2 twice while beating no one doesn't even get you noticed nationally.
To each his or her own. We had season tickets for a few years, probably 79 to 81 or so, I forget. Then kids came along, two deer leases, one or two waterfowl leases, elk hunts, etc. so I cut out the thing I enjoyed the least and that was going to football games. Those that have devoted 40 years or more, that's your business and not mine. I wouldn't have done it, but then you probably would not have wanted to be out in the mud, water, and cold in a lay down goose blind either.
But a couple of posts had me wondering. Wonder what sort of investment in ticket costs, travel, lodging if you didn't drive to and from the same day, parking, meals, etc., it took over 40 something years? I haven't kept up with the cost of attending since we dropped our tickets.
