I LOVE my Ags. And I am all in with the Kool Aid but watching teams like these two play really helps put things in perspective. It's easy to sit back and say "we got a natty coming this year!". But seeing the difference between what we just watched and A&M really helps me understand that it's a pipe dream. The level these guys play at isn't even in the same realm. What I can't understand is why we can't get there…ever….after repeated tries. I just don't get that part.
It is so damn apparent in these bowl games. There was no way we were going to compete at this level this year. I bleed Maroon and will till the day I die, but Aggies also don't lie.
We are watching complete or nearly complete teams go at it. Simple as that. We have never been a complete team since Johnny left. It takes all three phases. We MIGHT get hot and a championship level at one of them at a time. Then the rest invariably fail that one. Offense, defense, special teams. We can't lock down all of them at once. Infuriating but it's plain as day. Small comfort in knowing there is about 128+ teams that are also in that rut.
We were not a complete team when Johnny was here. Johnny covered several warts. We had one decent running back. The secondary was average. The d-line lacked depth. The program didn't reload after the losses from his first year.
One transcendent player can keep your team in every game. Baylor in 2011 and Boston College in 1984 had some thrilling 3 loss seasons for their fans. Tennessee this season played a very entertaining brand of football,, but they were abused multiple times by their lack of physical play.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough
