Geez that looks way worse that I realized from that angle.
Me too. I actually felt bad for Zardes after the miss, knowing hes going to take a lot of flack for it, but didnt appreciate how bad it was. After seeing the video I'm actually more angry.

And if only happened occasionally then hey, it happened and even the best shank a sitter every once in a while.

But when you're already somewhat known for...inaccuracy...then you hit that one...ouch.

It's one thing to not score, sometimes keepers make great saves. Or your shot is good, just not quite good enough. That...I have no words for how bad it was

Gyasing is the word you're looking for. It's basically saying you ****ed something up.

Here's some examples:

Damn he Gyasied that shot.

Hey kid, stop Gyasing the damn ball and put it on goal.

PatAg, you really Gyasied that post.

Here's another one that's very simple. If you **** something up, just yell GYASI!!!! It's the same as an F bomb.

I really like The Athletic for a lot of their sports coverage, but this guy covering MLS/USMNT Sam Stejskal is annoyingly pessimistic

What's next?

When is Olympic qualifying?

World Cup qualifying?

WC qualifying starts next spring but I'm not sure if we are in it that early. The Wikipedia page for concacaf qualifying said something about them changing the format.

CONCACAF Nations Leagues starts in the fall.

Olympic qualifying for US will be announced later.

WC Qualifying starts next spring.

Olympic qualifying is massively important, because I feel we'd have a shot to make some noise with a full strength U-23 roster

A solid summer Olympics would repair a ton of damage with the general public

Changes to WC qualifying

  • The Hexagonal, previously the final round of a longer qualification process, will begin in September 2020, with the six highest-ranked Concacaf teams in the post-June 2020 FIFA rankings taking part. The top three teams from round-robin play will qualify for Qatar.
  • Simultaneously, competition between the 7-35 ranked members of Concacaf will begin with a group stage (comprised of five groups of four teams and three groups of three). The eight group winners will move into a knockout stage. Those teams will play two-legged contests in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final with the winner of that tournament taking on the fourth-place finisher from the Hex for the right to take part in the intercontinential playoff for Concacaf's potential fourth World Cup slot.

I've also seen reports of a USA v Mexico friendly in New Jersey in September.

What the ****? If you are 5th or 6th best in the confederation, you have to finish 4th or better in the hex, but if you were 7th you just have to beat the other minnows and then the #4 team only???? But you also have no shot at qualifying automatically?
JJxvi

Im guessing the assumption is that Gold Cup and CONCACAF Nations League is going to be a defacto sorting out of the top 6 via FIFA rankings and therefore part of qualification??

Wow, Jamaica didnt make it into League A of Nations League, that might **** them for making the Hex.

Yeah, that seems...questionable. You could theoretically have a hot Curacao or T&T team go to the World Cup while a team like Honduras doesn't even have a chance to play for it after the Hex.

It feels like they are soooo close to the right answer, but they CONCACAF'd it.

Here's one way they could fix it: Send the top three through automatically, and send the bottom three to a playoff with the top three finishers from this "7-35 tournament" (which I will call the minnow fight) as follows

Byes: Hex 4th place and Minnow Fight Champ
Game 1: Hex 5th place vs. Minnow Fight 3rd Place
Game 2: Hex 6th place vs. Minnow Fight 2nd Place
Game 3: Hex 4th place vs. Game 2 winner
Game 4: Minnow Fight Champ vs. Game 1 winner
Game 5: Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner

In this example, no one gets screwed by their placement. In the actual setup, it could be argued that 7th is preferable to 6th.

I don't think they're that close.

I have a fundamental problem with teams being forced to play the top teams and getting potentially eliminated while others get to avoid that.

I know this format is going to be an absolute slog for the "minnows" and #4 will be the odds on favorite to win the playoff...I still don't like it.

I'm not a huge fan of your fix, although it at least gives 5 and 6 a chance. It still has that element that a minnow can have a great night or two and eliminate a team that's there because they were forced to play the top teams.

Isn't going straight to Hex gonna actually make this process safer for those who would traditionally be in the Hex? I don't see the problem with this at all. Throwing a bone to the minnows so the top 6 can get down to business. Seems like a win-win.

Also boosts the importance of all the other crap like
Gold Cup and Nations League since Hex will be based solely on FIFA ranking.

This is also a big plus for the minnows to get more competitive matches. Should raise the level of play for the entire region.

It's really a shame we basically will never have a friendly against a European team again
Aston94

Yeah, with all these regions adding a league to their schedule friendlies with other regions are going to be harder and harder to come by. You might get a chance to play a few in Europe when a country has a scheduled bye for the League of Nations or Euro-WCQ, and maybe get one to come here for winter break/training camp, but that will be about it.

Not really a fan of the League of Nations tournaments, I don't think we needed another title to hand out.

We are the 2nd best in the group. African teams always give us problems because of their physicality and speed. The U-17 group should be technical enough to mitigate those disadvantages.
