Leerdam and Svennson need to be subbed in at half for sure.

Columbus has definitely dominated so far, but one goal from Seattle dramatically changes the feel of this game.

Feels like we've got at least another goal or two coming in this game but I have no idea which side it'll be.

Congrats to the Crew! Y'all beat the crap out of us tonight. Glad you're still in the league, hope we see y'all in Seattle next year.

That was an exhausting game! Even a 3-0 lead didn't feel completely safe. So glad to close out Crew Stadium in style!

Sorry make that 3-1 and they've so far eliminated 3 LigaMX teams along the way.

But is that funny or pathetic?

Oh it's very funny and extremely pathetic when Miguel Herrera tries to pick a fight with an LA coach(who was one of the meanest dirtiest mls players ever), gets red carded and then tries to coach from the stands with a walkie talkie. Didn't even wear a fake mustache Bobby Valentine style, sheesh.

It was actually a really entertaining game. I don't put a lot of stock in the CCL as some sort of measure of league strength.

I can see that but it would be nice if MLS can win here and there..Seeing an MLS team play at club world cup against a Real Madrid or Liverpool would be cool.

MLS has invoked the Force Majeure clause in the CBA. Both sides have 30 days to in good faith renegotiate or the CBA can be scrapped altogether. I think many saw this coming but didn't want to talk about it. Not a good look for the league and I hope we don't have a lockout/strike over this

This isn't setting up to go well. I've already been reading that a lot of players are upset that the league was planning to start the 2021 season on the original schedule.

Yeah. Some of this is on the players too, they let the OG 2020 CBA sit unsigned back before the pandemic hit the states. if they'd signed it I don't know that they'd be in this situation.

So what do we think club de foot Montreal. Haven't heard someone say it out loud but what am I missing. At face value this looks horrible to me.

I think it's cool that they're using the language of the context that the team exists within, but unfortunately all I see is "club-foot."

The snowflake crest could be cool though.

I read calling soccer "foot" is French French, not French Canadian. I don't know. If that's the case, I hate it.

Not a fan, it's also going to sound super awkward in context with other American clubs.

"We're coming to you live today from sunny Austin, Texas, where expansion club Austin FC is ready to take on their Canadian neighbors Club de Foot Montreal..."

Also seems like an odd choice, I'm not even aware of French teams that use that sort of name format?
heddleston

Yeah it's weird, and it looks like the French just use FC which doesn't necessarily make sense in French either. I mean I don't know if I've ever called them anything besides just Montreal and that probably won't change.

Miami is about to hire one of Seattle's top FO guys and best scout, Chris Henderson. This is noteworthy as the first competent thing Miami has done ever.

I'm a nerd and bored on a Friday so I had to dig. I'll add the caviat that I don't speak French.

Based on what I can find:

1) "Club de foot" is indeed a way that French speakers can refer to football clubs, but every reference I could find used it in a generic sense i.e. a list of "clubs de foot" in Brussels or Paris. You can also find lots of use of the term "club de football" in the same contexts.

A clear example of generic usage can be seen with these awful coffee mugs. Many of these teams official names don't have the word "Football" in them (example "Lille" is "Lille Olympique Sporting Club"), but Rakuten uses the generic term "club de foot" for all of them since it clearly isn't interested in selling officially licensed mugs with real logos. (Honestly, who buys this garbage?)

2) But as far as official names and branding is concerned, I went 3 leagues deep into France and couldn't find a single use of "CF" or "Club de foot" (or football) in their official names. In every case, they use "Football Club" in their name and "FC" in their logo (when they're not Olympique, Racing, Sporting, etc). The closest you get is with "Clermont Foot 63" and "Grenoble Foot 38" in Ligue 2.

3) Therefore, I conclude that Montreal is trying too hard to be explicitly French... Like all of Quebec.

I've spent a lot of time throughout the French-speaking world, and I can tell you that "foot" is a common term for the sport. (For example, I remember reading the tabloid Le Foot Hebdo.) But the phrase "club de foot" is more generic, like "les clubs de foot" (soccer teams), rather than a typical name for an actual team.

In Quebec, the term "soccer" is actually used more often than foot or football. In fact, the semi-pro league in Quebec is called le Premiere Ligue de Soccer du Quebec. Many of the teams in the league include CS ("club de soccer" or "club soccer") in their names. Although the Impact had a minor league team called FC Montreal, the use of foot or football seems like they're trying too hard to sound European (much like the MLS clubs south of the border).
