I am looking at this tournament as a springboard for the team for next year. Given the number of young players getting significant time for us, this tournament is really all gravy and will be a great launch into next fall.
The game against TCU suggests we could go deep.

The tournament begins today (Tuesday), then we have the next round on Friday, when A&M enters the fray. With three days rest between the first and second round, I wonder whether there won't be a slight advantage going to the teams who play today, especially in the "tighter" matched seeds?

I'm from Colorado, and they are pretty optimistic about advancing to the second round and then being able to beat Oklahoma State. It will interesting to see how many of the first round winners can advance through the second round.

Some quick stats ahead of today's South Florida (USF) vs. Central Connecticut State (CCSU) game.
Kickoff at 2PM Central - Streamed on NCAA.com

Both teams are undefeated.

USF:
  • Ranked 15, RPI: 16
  • 9-0-2 Record (6-0-1 Conference)
  • Ties: 0-0 @ Florida, 1-1 @ Cincinnati
  • Outscored opponents 22-4
  • USF has 5 all-conference First team honors, including Forward of the Year, Defender of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
  • USF also earned the Team Fair Play Award after totaling 53 fouls, four yellow cards, zero red cards during conference play. The Fair Play Award is given to the team with the fewest accumulated fouls, yellow cards and red cards in league action (foul = one point, yellow card = five points, red card = 10 points). EDIT: Oops. That was actually UCF
  • 7th NCAA Tournament Appearance
  • Joined American Athletic Conference in 2013. Won 3 Tournament & 2 Regular Season titles in that span. This was their 2nd consecutive Conference Tournament Title.
  • Memphis also qualified from the American.

CCSU:
  • Unranked, RPI: 20
  • 7-0 Record (6-0 Conference)
  • They play in the Northeast Conference.
  • CCSU has 11 Northeast conference tournament titles. This is their 3rd straight.
  • Outscored opponents 19-1, Outshot opponents 134-24
  • The won the conference championship 4-0 without allowing a shot.
  • They're the "Blue Devils" if you're wondering.
  • The school is in New Britain, CT

As gaudy as their statistics are, CCSU's schedule didn't prepare them for the likes of USF. I think it's going to be ugly.

Wow. USF just netted their 3rd goal from 35 yards out. Bulls are looking fit as the game progresses.

USF rolling in more subs now. Still pretty sharp, short composed passes in their build ups. CCSU is wiped out, so they're getting tons of time on the ball.

As has been said, this might benefit USF. A nice little warm up game for them with adequate rest before Friday,

And Colorado falls to South Alabama 1-0. Hit the crossbar on a free kick with 40 seconds left. Rutgers scored with 3:37 left to beat SE Louisiana 1-0. Looks like the streaming of the games is working okay. Wonder if these officials work mostly east coast games. I was thinking the last NCAA tournament game we played in the Carolinas the ref gave Mikaela Harvey a second yellow card when she went down in the box after getting bumped from the left and the right in the first OT. We won the shootout though.

Officials were invited to NC for the entire tournament. So they're in quarantine just like the teams are. Most will be working both the men's and women's tournaments since they're in the same areas. Most work normally on the east coast, but you'll see some of the center referees be from all over. The referee for Rutgers v. Southeastern Louisiana, for example, is from Ft. Worth.

Iowa up on UCLA 1-0 in the 2nd half. Would be upset of the tourney for sure if this holds.

UCLA scores 2 goals in the last 5 minutes to beat Iowa 2-1. Unreal. The Hawkeyes had it and collapsed after the first goal.

I was wondering if we've ever had a freshman score in her first NCAA Tournament game? I noticed in the replay that Geczik brought the ball to Olivieri for the PK. On her second goal Olivieri moved to the right to separate from the defenders but the defenders were watching the ball instead of Olivieri.

I bet Linsey Woodard scored as freshman in the opening round back in 2001. Maybe, Krambeer or Klovstad in 2003 or Garey or Pistorious in 2004.

I know Monogue, Kunz, and Streight did it in 2011.
