Wha? The Texans have had full support from day one. I think they have sold out every game. Tailgating is great.

Showing how much you know. Yes a lot of the city bought in quickly. We are in a football state with people who love football. They were dying to have a team back. But a lot of the city (like my parents) still dont quite feel the connection with the Texans that they had with their Oilers.. and its hard to get that back though it does usually come with time. Stop trying to pint my argument into generalities.

Now you are just ****ing with me. You realize I cover Rice and UH, too, right?

Congrats. And your work is great. But you do understand that just about every sports fan in Houston is not from UH and Rice right? You do understand that the majority of the sports base are Aggie and Longhorn fans right? I myself never go to pro sports games, because I spend so much money on college sports. Doesnt mean I am apathetic to my teams.

You are highlighting bits and pieces of my points and taking them out of context. The overall point is that you could go to a baseball or basketball game and feel we are apathetic. But you are only getting a feel for the people that go to games. Most sports fans dont. Houston loves its teams.. but weve been through a tough stretch.

Also, stop acting like you are unbiased. You are a Spurs homer and always have been. You are not looking at anything objectively. And when Northern Mexico has a tough stretch itself, we will see how it holds up.. even with no other competition for hundreds of miles.

Aggies support their Aggies. I don't think that means Houston supports their Pro teams.

I am a lot more unbiased about Houston than you are. I am a Spurs fan, but I also root for all the Houston teams. In fact, I have a vested interest in the Houston teams being good because I make more money doing the same amount of work when the Houston teams are good. I want them to be good. Spurs-Rockets was a rivalry 15-20 years ago, but it just isn't now and I don't dislike the Rockets. I've gotten to know a lot of the Rockets, including Yao and Hakeem and really like them.

Rockets games are dead because the whole lower bowl is filled with luxery seating where nobody cares about the game. If you could allow real basketball fans in at a modest price you would see a much better atmosphere.

Not to mention there has been no reason to be excited about them since Yao went down.

I seriously doubt San Antonio would be much different if their team was lousy for a while. There are only a few pro teams that have great atmospheres no matter what the team's record is.

Well no ****, because they're old. But boomers are dying off and becoming less of the target audience, and people in the all important 18-45 demographic eat the Texans up like crazy. Houston is traveling well to road games and the support is rabid. I don't live in Houston anymore but had season tickets from 2002-2007. I make at least one road game per year and have friends who go to 10+ regular season games per year who tell me the atmosphere is crazy right now.

I think you missed my point. And I think we are arguing the same one. I was just trying to show that not everyone was in the boat all at once with the Texans.

the overall point is that this city is not what gutarsoup claims it is. Go over to cluthfans guitarsoup. There is absolutely NOBODY over there who cares about Houston sports. In fact, there are 2 million more posts there than on the San Antonio message board.

which city cares more about basketball?

I guess all those Spurs fans are at the game and dont have time to log on and talk about how much they care about their team.

My overall point is that I have been to several times more pro sporting events than your average fan in Houston over the last half decade and the atmosphere to all but the Texans games sucked.

Holy **** that is a terrible argument.

1. The Houston Metro area has about 4x more people than the SA metro Area.
2. SpursTalk is a cesspool of idiots.
3. SpursTalk switched BB systems in like 2005 or so and everything was reset and all users had to reregister. I don't think that happened with ClutchFans switched from ClutchCity.
4. There are a couple other Spurs message boards. I think SpursReport is one as well.

And we have Astros Daily, Crawfish Boxes, Climbing Tals Hill, the dreamshake, etc

Dont make up excuses. You have west texas and south texas on your side. Your fans are just apathetic. Live with it.

I will unfortunately have to agree with Guitar on this one. I went to a Rockets-Mavs game last year, and the Mavs fans in the stands were more in to the game than the hometown Rockets fans. Hopefully we can start winning some games and get the fans to the game, but that doesn't change the fact that for the most part, Rockets fans are on the level of Rangers fans when it comes to bandwagons. It really is unfortunate

The majority of the people who attend rockets games aren't real fans. They're people who got their tickets through some company who owns them.

This happens with even the most passionate of fan bases. Auburn last week, A&M in 2008, and many many more. Pro teams are especially affected. Everyone likes to claim how awesome their fan base is, but when **** turns south, they all end up with empty seats and quiet venues.

I hear ya, but not everyone is like that. The Cubs have been irrelevant for years now, but Wrigley has been sold out every game. Same with the Red Sox this year. I think basketball in general is that way, though. I can't think of a fanbase that gets rowdy and packs the stands when their NBA team sucks.

This sums up Houston sports in a nutshell. Sure you have a core group of diehard fans, but a large portion of the Houston population doesn't have especially strong ties to the city. They enjoy sports, but aren't going to support the teams through extended dry spells.

Mazag nails it here, there are a lot of serious sports fans in Houston, but they root for other teams. I have been to a handful of sporting events in Houston where the most enthusiastic fans were rooting for the visiting team. They will go to a couple games a year just because they live here, but spend the majority of the time watching their teams. I am a pretty solid Texans fan, but I passed up tickets one time because I wasn't going to be back from College Station in time for kickoff. I have lived here my whole life, but I just care about A&M football more than the Texans.

Going to games is not the only way to be a fan.

Sure... but the otherside of that is which fans tend to travel to other cities to watch their team play: the sit on their hands type or the enthusiastic ones.

Re: the Cubs and Red Sox, those places sell out constantly and are rowdy because they are tourist destinations as much as they have faithful awesome fans.

End of the day, the code's not difficult to break. There are 3 things that you can correlate to passionate fandom: how good a team is, weather, and density of population and city. Houston's got all 3 going against them, hence, the fans are pretty apathetic.

It's been the same since I was in college. I believe it was the last game of the Rockets Championship season I went down to watch the Mavs play. My buddy & I bought two floor seats on the 2nd or 3rd row for $30.

The place was dead and this was when they were at their best.
