On Biggio's defense. He played catcher throughout the minors and into his major league career, then played OF for a year, then switched to 2B and won Gold Gloves at the position.

I can't think of another catcher who could even try that, much less did it.

There are a few catchers that could move pretty well. Fisk could run pretty good in his younger days. He made starts at C, 1B, 3B and LF. Just no where near as much as Biggio. Jason Kendall also comes to mind. He played LF and RF, too.

A catcher that can hit .280 with 20HRs and 20 SBs is pretty valuable. Not a lot of starting catchers can do that. But those numbers aren't all that special for a CF/LF or 1B/2B. So they are more valuable catching. It isn't that hard to find that type of production in a field player.

In bulk, they sure do mean something.

Sometimes generally bad fielders have good years and arguably deserve the gold glove, and sometimes voters make mistakes. Its those two reasons I think people want to throw out the entire award. (Mistakes of judgement are made with everything- even when we're comparing stats, yet we can't throw out everything.)

They're a piece of the puzzle, and they're good guidance. If a guy has a lot of Gold Gloves, or a lot of Silver Sluggers, or a lot of All-Star Appearances, it gives you a strong sign that he's someone worth looking at.

Well, if you take a few seconds to look at the stats, I think most Gold Gloves make sense.

Gold Gloves are a joke. How many does Jeter have now?

The main issue with Gold Gloves is it appears the players offensive stats make him more desirable to vote for when it should be completely separate. Offense increases popularity which increases more mistakes in judgement.
