I know I'm a McHugh lover, but I was plea entry surprised on his first game back. Yes he gave up 4 ER, but I feel that was more of good hitting than poor pitching

You've just converted from a McHugh fan to a McHugh homer. The dude wasn't a top prospect for a reason.

This Appel promotion issue is getting ridiculous. I've never heard of major league players beetching about a AA call up. Absolutely uncalled for and Porter needs to grow a pair and chew some arse and tell these guys to STFU and worry about winning games. Gotta think this would never happen if we had any kind of veteran leadership on this team.

“Unbelievable,” one Astros said. “I’m not in a good mood.”

A few minutes later, another Astro approached a reporter to offer his thoughts while the media waited to speak with farm director Quinton McCracken and manager Bo Porter in the home dugout.

“So now you get rewarded for having an 11 ERA? And you have two guys down there (at Class A Lancaster) with 2 ERAs who can’t get called up?” the Astros player said on the condition of anonymity, alluding to Appel’s ERA and lefthander Josh Hader’s superb season at Lancaster.

90% of our major league roster doesn't ****in deserve to be here. So unless it's Altuve or Springer they need to just shut the **** up

The guys on the big league roster all had to work their way up. This Appel promotion goes with the idea that he is getting preferential treatment from the team. A 9.74 ERA usually ends up in a demotion not a promotion. I don't think the players should have gone to the media with it but I can see their point.

The front office made this decision and it stirred up the clubhouse. This is a crap team that is struggling to win games and now the locker room is a disaster. Sometimes the Astros just can't get out of their own way.

Most of our guys on the major league roster are there by default. Not many "worked" their way up. Astros has invested a LOT into Mark which is why this is happening. If players can't see that then oh well

Josh Hader is also maybe 20 years old, whereas Mark Appel is 23 and has gone through 4 years of college baseball. Appel has been hurt, and it looks like now he may have found his groove. Comparing the two based on ERA's is stupid, and the players need to count their blessings and thank the Good Lord that they are on a terrible team, because 90% of our roster shouldn't sniff a big league roster

They all need to just shut the hell up. If they were winning, they would have some pull. But being the 2nd worst team in the league, they need to seriously STFU. Hoes, Krauss, and Grossman have absolutely no business being on an MLB roster. And like I said earlier, stats do not have to be important in the minors. I'm not sure why people are so concerned with stats in the minors. Maybe the Astros told Appel to work on a very specific aspect of his game that may not translate to good stats (ie, only throwing certain types of pitches or location, etc). It happens in Spring Training so why wouldn't it happen in the minors. But in a very blunt point, they need to worry about their own game instead of worrying about a prospect. If they don't want to be cut, then get better and start winning. It's that simple. Unbelievable. Just goes to show that Luhnow and Porter not only has to deal with no talent ass clowns but they have to deal with diva no talent ass clowns. ****ing pisses me off.

As for the move itself I think it's a great decision. He gets a boost of confidence, change of scenery, and a reward for sticking with it and seeing things through. Like others have said his stats aren't good but getting him out Lancaster and him seeing a commitment/trust from the club has to be good for him in the long run.

I remember a report where he was told to just work on his fastball during his start and he got absolutely lit up. I'm sure it has happened more than once

If there are rumblings in the clubhouse then Porter needs to put his big boy pants on and address it. ASAP.

From mlbtraderumors:

The Nationals have asked the Astros about available relievers, and Houston had scouts watching the Nats’ Triple-A and Class A affiliates over the weekend. Left-hander Tony Sipp best fits the Nationals’ needs, Kilgore surmises, since Washington is thin on southpaw relief options.

I'm willing to bet the guys complaining are ones who know their job is in danger in the near future.. pitchers to be specific.

More from mlbtraderumors:

"6:21pm: When asked about prospective deals Houston GM Jeff Luhnow said there’s “nothing that feels close” at this time, tweets Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. The GM went on to say (link), “There’s conversations happening and there have been for the past week multiple conversations happening every day.”

5:32pm: The Astros have previously said that they weren’t inclined to move left-hander Dallas Keuchel or right-hander Collin McHugh, both of whom are in the midst of breakout seasons, but Luhnow softened his stance when speaking to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (12:23 timestamp in the update window). The Houston GM tells Rosenthal that the lack of available starting pitching has prompted him to consider dealing Keuchel, McHugh, or right-hander Jarred Cosart:

“We do seem to have an excess of pretty good young starters so we wouldn’t rule anything out. We’d have to get back a big-league piece, preferably a bat, in a package that makes sense for the future and present.”

The 26-year-old Keuchel can be controlled through the 2018 season, while McHugh, 27, and Cosart, 24, are controllable through the 2019 campaign. Keuchel and McHugh, in particular, have had surprisingly strong seasons, with Keuchel posting a 3.11 ERA in 127 1/3 innings, and McHugh notching a 3.45 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings (10.4 K/9).

Keuchel was Houston’s seventh-round selection in the 2009 draft, while McHugh was claimed off waivers (Houston had tried to trade for him in 2013), and Cosart was acquired in the Hunter Pence deal back in 2011. None of three are eligible for arbitration after the season. Keuchel will be arb-eligible following the 2015 season, while Cosart and McHugh are eligible following the 2016 season."
