In a real division we would be in serious trouble. Hitters need to get their sh** together.

Yep. Deserved to lose this one and this team makes me see a short playoff run seemingly every other time out.

2-5 in the last seven against a softening part of the schedule.

If tucker bunts towards 3B it's tied. There isn't anyone there to field it.

Astros refuse to win the easy way
it's very frustrating

because in Manfred ball...when the opponent doesn't score in the top of the 10th...

you don't need a double or home run to win the game -- don't even need a hit to win the game

the opponent is happy when the home team doesn't play small ball in that scenario

Apparently only a few guys on the team can bunt. Caratini should have bunted 1000% in the 11th. Lost art I guess. Except if you are the A's

so the Guardians got win #83 tonight

play the White Sox again tomorrow afternoon

if Cleveland takes care of business...that would be win #84

Don't know if you will see a better relief appearance in this new extra inning format than what Abreu had.

2 shutout innings and 5 Ks

Unfortunately our inept offense couldn't reward him

Why did Espada pull Singleton after a triple?

Everytime we try and get cute at 1B by using some else something bad seems to happen at 1B. I am sick of Espada using other options at 1B.

Similar to last season we sure aren't giving ourselves any room for error in the final stretch. Are we gonna need Lady Luck to survive this division again?

Embarrassing performance in Manfred ball.

it's hard to describe how bad Espada got outmanaged

he got caught with 3 left-handed hitters at 7-8-9 in the final innings

despite making 4 substitutions at those spots in the batting order

and it played right into Kotsay's late game bullpen strategy

Don't think you can right now or he would have started there. His glove is 100% worth it if he can. He would be playing there is he can

Maybe so. Just seems weird that he can "run sprints" but can't play in RF even if he doesn't go 100%.

No one manages for the 12th inning. He was trying to give his team a chance to come back in a ball game where his 3-4 hitters were 0-11 and we had stranded a dozen runners before the first (non-injury) sub. There may be issues, but not saving hitters for the 12th inning, especially when we could have won in the 10th or 11th without a hit, is not something to criticize. Not to mention, one of his PH choices led to the only runs in the first 9 innings allowing us to have multiple chances to win.

This is on the players unless you thought he should have sat King Tuck but we have been clamoring for him for 2 months and everyone was glad he didn't have a rehab assignment. So his 0-6 is what it is.

Exactly...I was hoping since they are playing winning ball over the last few months we could beat them as those are the types of teams we usually do well against. Seattle did us a solid and lost so we're still 4.5 up but we need to push that to around 6 before we play them.

They're likely going to split their 4 game series with the rangerettes so if we can go on a run we can get a little separation.

My issue isn't the lefty/righty hitters in the lineup it's the unwillingness or inability to adjust and play small ball when the situation calls for it and the Manfred rules in extra innings calls for that.

Yeah, there's all the BS sabermetrics saying bunting takes away chances to win and small ball doesn't work but I'd submit that the formulas and data don't properly account for situational usage because the data set isn't big enough on the small ball side in late in tied or close games and extra innings when you don't need to put up a crooked number.

Last night, particularly in the bottom of the 10th and 11th the inability to play small ball while the A's executed it killed us.

Small would have had the same outcome
I think we moved the runner over with 1 out both innings.
We just didn't put the ball in the air after that.

The strategy was fine, players need to get a hit.

The A's in the 12 laid 2 perfect bunts in a row.
Is what it is.

Bottom 12 down 2 with tuve at the plate and he almost tied it. Problem was Tucker and Bregman and Diaz not being clutch behind Alvarez and tuve.

Agree to disagree then.

Bottom of the 10th Bregman & Diaz both ground out on pretty weak balls and Diaz smokes the liner to right that Cameron made a great play on.

Bottom of the 11th, Caratini strikes out to lead off the inning. Then Gamel grounds out moving Pena to 3rd and Heyward strikes out. Caratini bunts Pena to 3rd then you've got 2 outs to try to score the winning run on a ground ball.

Except in the 10th bregmans grounder did move the runner over, no? So that could classified as small ball. And he still didn't score.

For the potential to bunt in the 11th, a ground ball likely doesn't score a runner on third with one out in that situation as the infield would be playing in.

You can small ball and it could help. But hitters still have to execute.
