The only reason the discussions have resumed is one of the following possibilities:
1) He has no offers that are better than our original
2) He has no offers remaining even as good as our original
3) The only teams remaining with competitive offers are ones that he doesn't want to play for.
In any case, we need not be petty, but we don't need to ignore the realities of his market and/or desire to return to Houston either.
We have the leverage here, not Bregman.
I think it's a mix of 1 and 3.
He probably got an offer better than ours from Toronto and worse offers to places he likes Chicago & Boston.
If we come in at less, then it'll push him to Canada. If we come in at our old offer or something very similar to it, then he can accept it while all the writers can report "He took 10 M less to come to Houston than Toronto". The same kind of thing they report when LA gets someone over Toronto. No way Bregman will accept a deal 25-30 M less.
