The only thing missing is a prediction that we trade for his brother mid season again for unfinished business

Best of luck to Pressly. Will always have a special place in Astros history with 2022. But this is best for all involved. Blue star for him.

Yeah, why would the Astros suddenly act desperate?

The only reason the discussions have resumed is one of the following possibilities:
1) He has no offers that are better than our original
2) He has no offers remaining even as good as our original
3) The only teams remaining with competitive offers are ones that he doesn't want to play for.

In any case, we need not be petty, but we don't need to ignore the realities of his market and/or desire to return to Houston either.

We have the leverage here, not Bregman.
I think it's a mix of 1 and 3.

He probably got an offer better than ours from Toronto and worse offers to places he likes Chicago & Boston.

If we come in at less, then it'll push him to Canada. If we come in at our old offer or something very similar to it, then he can accept it while all the writers can report "He took 10 M less to come to Houston than Toronto". The same kind of thing they report when LA gets someone over Toronto. No way Bregman will accept a deal 25-30 M less.

Looks like a promising prospect.

He's gotta ditch that Nestor Cortes bull**** with his windup, though

As long as we don't get caught up in this kind of bs with Alex... No wonder Pete is still a free agent

We're now on page 156. I think its a sign.

The GOAT wants him. The manager wants him. Houston wants him. Bregman can climb the ladder of Astro greatness. The top 3 may be out of range, but he can try and chase down guys like Nolan, Berkman, and Wagner.

Would love to somehow move Caritini and a mid-level prospect for a decent middle reliever

I get why Caratini's salary may be one we cannot afford wbile filling our needs, but I sure would love to have him on the bench again this year.

Not only does he keep the lineup from being substantially weaker when Diaz has the day off, but with such a left handed lineup, his LH PH ability could loom large as an undervalued asset.

He's under contract ($6m) this year.

We need another bat imo

Don't know that means paying Bregman nine figures

But it is what it is

The guy is malcontent, and has a no trade clause. The Cubs used that to their advantage.

This is kind of a sliding scale. If we got a worse prospect, the money we covered grew. If we got a better prospect, the money we covered shrank.

I expected it to be more, but maybe Bello is more highly thought of than the public sites.

Here is a snippet from Baseball America.
Quote:

Signed by the Cubs out of Colombia in February 2022, Bello made his full-season debut with Low-A Myrtle Beach in 2024. Over 22 starts spanning 89.2 innings with the Pelicans, Bello posted a 3.21 ERA with 91 strikeouts to 28 walks. He mixes a low-90s fastball with above-average ride, a low-80s slider, a mid-80s changeup and a mid-70s curveball with heavy two-plane break. Bello found success mixing up his trio of secondaries with near-even usage this season, generating above-average whiff numbers against each. He fits the Astros' organizational philosophy of developing pitchers with three or more secondaries to play off of their fastball.

Is it too late to sign Bregman to pair w/ Paredes and bring in the Crawfords another 5-10 feet before opening day.

Y'all keep in mind this is probably a contract Jim will negotiate. I think if we go 5 or fewer years, he's not coming back. He can get that elsewhere.

Then let him! We have already made the appropriate moves to replace him! He has no leverage here. If he wants to be back, good, fine, but it needs to be at $20-25M AAV, 4 years max. If that's not good enough for him, go elsewhere and stop leading us (and himself) along.

~5.5 M under the tax level. If we pay Bregman 25M, we'll have to make another deal to stay under the 2nd level. We'll be around 0.5 M over it.

Every dollar spent over 241 M will be taxed at 30% instead of 20%.

I think too many are thinking of the Bregman deal in a vacuum. is he worth 6/156? Maybe. Maybe not. Paying 30 years old 5+ years is usually a bad idea. I think we'r heading to a very large cliff after 2027.

The following will be free agents after '27 (a few after '26)
  • Walker
  • McCullers (26)
  • Abreu (26)
  • McCormick (26)
  • Garcia (26)
  • Paredes
  • Pena
  • Meyers

Altuve will be 38 & Yordan/Diaz/Brown will be on their walk year. If I am running the show, I go all in on the next 3 seasons then unload Yordan/Diaz/Brown to usher in a new crop of minor leaguers.

Yup but we'll have money coming off the books. We should be able to sign an arm or two next offseason.

Next year is also a great year to go after a pitcher. I like Ranger Saurez as a cheaper version of Framber but there are a lot of others as well. You honestly may not even need a pitcher depending on the development of Arrighetti and Wesneski and health of LMC, Luis, France and Javier.

I'm more concerned about a complete lack of a lefty bat outside Yordan. Has a team ever won a WS with 1 lefty in their lineup? I honestly don't know.

Unless Alex leaves, I think the left handed bat they're going to look to is Taylor Trammel who they picked up off the DFA heap from the Yankees. Big Jon will be the one off the bench. If Victor is traded, Salazar is left handed too

I like Big Jon, but I don't see how he has a spot on the roster now. With a four man bench, you have Caratini/Salazar, Dubon, DeZenzo, and one more backup OF. Given that we have no DH ABs to offer Jon (a bunch of guys competing for those on days off) and a frontline 1B, I don't think you can keep a pure PH with no position to play. That is why I think Caratini is important as a LHB off the bench.

Pressly trade is bad business for the Astros imo. Mistake was signing Hader for all that money and insulting Pressly in the process. Pressly can do everything Hader can for a fraction of the cost. Plus Playoff Pressly > Playoff Hader

We offered Bregman 6/156 when we needed a 3B and we thought we were competing with other 5+ year offers. Now that we traded away a very good player and depleted our OF to get a 3B and found out nobody else is willing to offer Alex 5 years, he is not worth 6/156 and we would be fools to offer anything close to that now. 3/75 or 4/100 with a club option for years 3/4 would be much more appropriate for what the market is offering Alex now. He made a bad choice and the banker's offer should go down accordingly.
