We offered Bregman 6/156 when we needed a 3B and we thought we were competing with other 5+ year offers. Now that we traded away a very good player and depleted our OF to get a 3B and found out nobody else is willing to offer Alex 5 years, he is not worth 6/156 and we would be fools to offer anything close to that now. 3/75 or 4/100 with a club option for years 3/4 would be much more appropriate for what the market is offering Alex now. He made a bad choice and the banker's offer should go down accordingly.
He has 4 and 5 year offers from other teams that he can take. If the team is only going to offer 3 or 4 years, they shouldn't even bother making an offer.

Pressly trade is bad business for the Astros imo. Mistake was signing Hader for all that money and insulting Pressly in the process. Pressly can do everything Hader can for a fraction of the cost. Plus Playoff Pressly > Playoff Hader

I could not disagree with this take any more. Did you even watch Pressly the past 2 seasons? In serious decline.

Pressly is on the last leg of his career.

He's become increasingly ineffective over the past 2 years.

Give me Hader over this current version of Pressly.

You still need someone to play 1st on Walker days off. Dezenzo and Caratini can fill that role, and I don't know how they stack up to Jon defensively, but I suppose it's nice to have a true back up. Just a thought.

Plus, he's cheap and is a LH option

I agree that we cannot offer 3-4. But if his best offers by teams he is not excited about are 5 year offers, then that is the offer I would extend. Matxh the best 5 year offer he has. There is no way it is above 150.

I think the org wants to get DeZenzo ABs, so backup ABs at 1B would seem to be his. I am assuming they project him as a 1B/LF with a projectable bat who can play 3B/2B in a pinch.

you seriously need to take a look at the stats and analytics. Or just turn on an Astros game and watch

I thought somebody posted a tweet from somebody saying that Alex wanted a 5 year deal and no teams were offering that. My take on it is that it would be very nice to have Alex back and have the "problem" of figuring out how to fit him into the lineup. But we do not have a glaring gap in our lineup without him like we did before we traded for Paredes and Smith. What we are willing to pay for him should reflect that we don't NEED him enough to break the bank (and go into the 2nd tier luxury tax) to get him. I think we call Boras' bluff and offer him 3-4 at a team friendly price and see how bad he really wants to go try to be a right handed pull hitter in Detroit. Detroit is a long way from AZ and they don't like salsa much up there.

Paredes can play first

Y'all are some awful negotiators if you think he should still get the 6/156 offer.

That's not how it works.

Yep, as much as I like Jon's bat off the bench, we have too may other bats that can play 1B to consiser carrying a pure 1B/DH on a four-man bench.

What is Jon's outlook, right now and if Caratini stays on the roster?

Next year is also a great year to go after a pitcher. I like Ranger Saurez as a cheaper version of Framber but there are a lot of others as well. You honestly may not even need a pitcher depending on the development of Arrighetti and Wesneski and health of LMC, Luis, France and Javier.

I'm more concerned about a complete lack of a lefty bat outside Yordan. Has a team ever won a WS with 1 lefty in their lineup? I honestly don't know.

Unless Alex leaves, I think the left handed bat they're going to look to is Taylor Trammel who they picked up off the DFA heap from the Yankees. Big Jon will be the one off the bench. If Victor is traded, Salazar is left handed too
Trade is your only option. Could you turn around and trade Paredes? Seems like he should be appealing to whoever was in on Bregman (Red Sox, Tigers, Toronto).

Astros have coveted Paredes for a while and finally landed him. Zero chance they seek to trade him.

Understood, but many saw it as a necessary step to reacquiring Bregman.

Not even close to the truth. Pressly was asking to be traded even last season.

Is Bregman's defense at 3B a really big deal?

He had a good WAR last year despite pretty poor offensive stats

Does having him at 3B, Pena at SS, Peredes at 2B, and Walker at 1B make our infield defense elite?

I have been a fan of Pressly but last season he was showing decline. Not having him pitch anymore for the good guys will most likely keep my blood pressure down.

On their podcast, Chandler suggests that the bregman decision could happen this week.
They also suggested that Altuve would be headed to LF sooner or later regardless of Bregman returning.
Was his defense that bad?

According to them, he is statistically one of the worst defensive second basemen in the league

From what I understand Altuve is the worst fielding 2B in the league, or near to it, per Rome

I thought he was much better last year than previous year

I dont think his 'bad' defense is a noticeable detriment to the team

Was looking up Biggio's OF stats. I had no recollection of him playing OF early in his Astros career, but he did.

5 games in 1989
50 in 1990
2 in 1991

Then nothing again until
6 in 1999
1 in 2002

Then suddenly
150 in 2003 at age 37
149 in 2004 at age 38

That is so incredibly insane. What a player. He had previously played 18 games in the OF in the minors.

Robin Yount is more comparable to Altuve if he moves positions. Yount played SS from 1974-1984 for the Brewers, then swtiched to OF in 1985 and played there except for a smattering of games at 1B for the rest of his career.

Dating back to his 2007 season as a 17-year-old, Altuve has:
1 game at 3B in 2008
2 games at 3B in 2010
13 games at 3B and 1 at SS in 2011
1 game at SS in 2016 with the Astros
1 game at SS in 2019 with the Astros

Altuve's noodle arm doesn't play any OF position.

So up until this point, all the insiders (here and elsewhere) had indicated virtually 0% chance of Breggy coming back. Do we really feel this Pressly deal and the market falling off for Alex really gives us a legit chance to retain him?

Count me as one that would love to resign him, and I am not worried about 5 years from now. I see our window open for 3 more years and just want to extend this unparalleled level of success we've been having a little longer. Im ok with a total rebuild after that.

Honest question, what's your evidence for that statement? The team obviously disagrees, and I don't recall ever seeing him even attempt a long throw.
