I cant argue with being spoiled by stacked rosters.

They're young pitchers. Not many pitchers just burst onto the scene and put up multiple years of CY quality pitching.

Hell Blanco and Spaghetti don't have multiple seasons period.

I tend to lean the other way. Brown was a GD stud the 2nd half and seemed to have figured it out. I expect BIG things form him. Blanco had a solid 1st year as a starter and seemed to get tired down the stretch. He should take a step forward. Spencer is in the same boat as Brown. Figured it out and was K machine.

They'll have bumps but I feel good about the pitching especially the rotation.

I guess I would just feel a little more comfortable if we added one more whos done it before over multiple years... along with those young guys. Im not talking about an Ace... just a solid pitcher. I guess im being hard to please with that. Especially since we did bring in Wesneski.

If LMJ and Garcia come back let's say early May… we have one of the top 1-6 rotations in baseball.

I like our current 1-4, especially if Blanco and Arrighetti take a next step or even replicate their 2024 numbers

I would feel this way if at the end of May Lance and Luis are nowhere to be found.

Quote:

Garcia underwent a Tommy John surgery in May 2023 and was initially expected to be back in action near the end of last season. He started a minor league rehab assignment last June and was seemingly on the path to making that timeline, yet some lingering soreness between outings led to a pair of shutdowns, and the Astros ultimately announced last August that Garcia wouldn't pitch in 2024.

Garcia shed some more light on his situation when speaking with Rome today, saying that some tightness in his throwing elbow in September led to a six-week shutdown for evaluation. Fortunately, Garcia emerged from that latest setback without any serious injury, and now says he is feeling good as Spring Training approaches.

They've actually spoken with a couple vets recently. No big names, but kinda fits the description of what you described.

Erick Fedde is one I mentioned yesterday. Lance Lynn is someone they've had contact with. A couple others as well.

Edit to add thoughts: This tells me either A) they want insurance and depth in case one of LMJ or Garcia face a setback or B) they plan to trade a younger arm for an OF bat and that vet will take their spot in the rotation.

My guess? Little of both.

Lance posted another BP session this morning. Sinkers and at least one slider are shown in the brief story.

there is no way that anyone in the org thinks Lance needs to be coming back to be a starter, do they?

So who is the starting rotation to start the year...
1. Framber
2. Brown
3. Blanco
4. Arrighetti

Is our 5th guy Wesneski?

We are all talking about the outfield and Bregman... Our rotation seems problematic.

Lance and Luis come back in April. Somewhere in their is a 5th starter/tandem pair

Looking at free agents, there are still a ton of arms out there.

SP is a little thin. I think someone like Tyler Alexander or Spencer Turnbull could work.

Lots of RP options. We could bring back any of Neris, Maton, or Raley and I think they'd slot in nicely for the 6th/7th. I'd also look at Ottovino. He's still nasty. Smyly would work too.

I really expect Brown to make some noise this season.

I expect him to be an AS caliber pitcher who finds his way on to the CY leaderboard as one who's getting votes. Not that I think he'll make a serious run at the award but just someone who collects some votes and gets some good pub.

I think there's three different directions this thing could go. I expect at least one more move to be made, but obviously nothing is ever guaranteed.

Option 1: Bregman comes home. Paredes plays second and Altuve sees the majority of his time in LF.
Option 2: Arenado comes to Houston. Montero is a part of the package and comes off the books. Paredes plays second and Altuve sees the majority of his time in LF.
Option 3: Astros trade a young arm for an upgrade in the OF. Altuve sticks at second (with plenty of time at DH) and Paredes plays 3B. They acquire a cheap vet to fill the hole in the rotation.

I know they've inquired about Donovan from STL. This is complete speculation on my part but I could see a world where say, Arrighetti, gets shipped to the Cards and Donovan comes to Houston to play second base moving Altuve to left field.

I also know they haven't given up on the Luis Robert pipe dream. Dana Brown loves that guy.

Given Arenado sees a possibility of going to Boston, I think they'd have a hard time getting him to waive the NTC. Chaim Bloom (former Red Sox GM) is now with the Cardinals, so he knows their farm system really well, and I'm sure they could extract a lot more value from them than us.

Another dude who better have a bounce back year......

I think I read they want a teams top 2 prospects to get him. For us that would probably require more than 2 prospects. This was in contact if the reds trying to get him

Hes only got 3 more years of control and we are in no position to be giving up a haul. We do have some guys towards the top that need to get looks this year specifically the college guys weve taken early the last few years.....

The White Sox need to see if they can get him to show signs of life to justify a real return. But they also run the risk of him continuing to suck/getting hurt and what little value he had goes away. They should've moved him at the 2023 deadline or 23/24 offseason like they did Cease.

Arrighetti + Montero for Donovan + Fedde would fix a lot of the 2025 roster construction issues and free up cash, at the expense of Arrighetti's future controllable years.

We would likely have to slap a prospect or two on top of that if we want them to absorb that salary

A significant prospect. Maybe 2.

I don't want to give up another young arm. I'll pass on sending Spencer to plug a hole elsewhere.

That just making another hole.

Now that I think about it, I bet Montero would only be included if Arenado is involved, to offset the financial impact on the Astros books.

If the Astros and Cardinals are still working on something without Arenado I don't think they'd force Montero into it.

Do you have any insight what the original return for Arenado was going to be if he didn't veto? Are the Cardinals still pursuing these players?

I don't hate it if you can get a bit of a discount. Pitchers have more injury risk heading into a walk year. Next year will be a robust pitching market as well so no need to overspend as you can replace him if need be.

Make St. Louis give up Donovan and Fedde to take on Arenado. Fangraphs projects that trio to be an 8 WAR combination in 2025.

What would the Astros have to give up, assuming Montero is part of the swap? Not sure Dana could swing it, but St. Louis might be desperate to clear Arenado's salary.

Probably in the minority here, but I wouldn't be in favor of a huge contract for Framber. Get him at a "discount"? Maybe, but I don't see alot of players doing that these days.

I don't think Boras is his agent... right?

Framber ain't taking a discount

Framber loves him some swag and I doubt La Grasa is in the business of taking a team friendly deal.
