If I'm the Astros I go sign Verdugo today, and get the OF/left handed bat situation handled.
Exactly. Which is why we should not be considering him. We don't need 3 highly paid 3B with Yordan and Altuve already penciled in at DHEastCoastAgNc said:He has a no trade clause, he's not going to waive it to play outfield. Only way we should even consider Arenado is if he can play above average OF. And even considering giving Bregman 6/156 at this point is peak Bad Crane. Offer him 4/100 with mutual year 3/4 opt outs and let him decide if he wants to keep playing for a championship contender in a ballpark that suits his hitting style or if he wants to go to the great white north and become an afterthought when he can't get it out of the park.
A lot of us are old enough to remember being Boras's pawn for Beltran to get his max deal with the Mets after the '04 season.AustinCountyAg said:
all this reads to me as Boras desperately trying to save face and to use the Astros as pawns to get more money out of someone else. The problem is the Astros now have a 3B and they dont need Alex. Would be nice to have him back, but the idea of the Astros offering more money that what has already been offered is straight BS imo. IF they do offer more I agree with farmer. some will be deferred and hidden in a way just so Alex can save some face.
In the meantime there is zero reasons why the Astros should rush to get it done. It is obvious Alex isn't happy with any other offers he's gotten so he's the one in a tight spot with a decision to make. Not the Astros, who obviously hold all the leverage.
Why do that? I can see mortgaging the future of the franchise with deferred money to gain the necessary leverage to sign a key player you feel like you have to have that you can lock up long term and build a new championship run around. Bregman isn't that guy to me. 90% of his value at this point is sentimentality. We traded away a really good OF to get his replacement...so his value to us is greatly decreased; especially if we have to start moving guys around to places they have never played (and likely won't play well) to find a way to shoehorn him back into the lineup. Any deal he signs with us at this point should be team friendly or shouldn't happen at all.Farmer1906 said:I wonder if this is just an ego thing. We can up our offer to Bregman 6/190, but then when you get the details it breaks down to something like 6/110 with 80 M deferred from 2031 to 2040. The present value ends up around 6/155 M.SpaceCityAg05 said:
Saying 6/156 is not enough is a ridiculous bargaining ploy. If he had a better offer that he was willing to take, it would be over already.
This is trying to squeeze Bad Crane to spend more from sentimentality.
I am told the odds of the Astros signing Alex Bregman are “very low!” per source.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen but it likely will not.

Embarrassing for Bregman and Boras but not for the Astros
He lost a ton of leverage and the Astros circled back to see if it was doable based on the change of the market since their last go round.
Kind of where I am at this point.Marvin said:
Keep the money and look for a trade at the deadline. OF or reliever, as needed.
That's what I'm thinking. Alex probably is losing patience while Boras is playing the whole "trust me bro, it may take some time, but we will get you paid what you are really worth".SpaceCityAg05 said:
I wonder how much Alex is driving (beyond indicating basic desires) vs. allowing Boras to do his thing.

The roller coaster in this thread of "We want Breggy!" and "Screw him!" is really funny
keep in mind that Jon Heyman is a mouthpiece for Boras. He only repeats what boras wants out therebearkatag15 said:

Id love to have him here. Sounds like he doesn't want to be here though and if so..... he can **** off. Respectfully
I think it's fair to hear when talks are happening again that Bregman may have "come to his senses" and get a little bit excited for that.texasaggie2015 said:
