If I'm the Astros I go sign Verdugo today, and get the OF/left handed bat situation handled.

Only way we should even consider Arenado is if he can play above average OF. And even considering giving Bregman 6/156 at this point is peak Bad Crane. Offer him 4/100 with mutual year 3/4 opt outs and let him decide if he wants to keep playing for a championship contender in a ballpark that suits his hitting style or if he wants to go to the great white north and become an afterthought when he can't get it out of the park.
He has a no trade clause, he's not going to waive it to play outfield. He looks at playing third base like Pressley insisted on being the closer.
Exactly. Which is why we should not be considering him. We don't need 3 highly paid 3B with Yordan and Altuve already penciled in at DH

If so, so be it. There is just no way you can justify going "substantially" higher.

I would be OK giving him the same AAV but shorten the deal in years. Absolutely no way should he get offered the same 6/156.

Sorry Alex...That was the offer months ago and you turned that offer down. Our situation and your situation have both changed since then. That offer is no longer an option.

all this reads to me as Boras desperately trying to save face and to use the Astros as pawns to get more money out of someone else. The problem is the Astros now have a 3B and they dont need Alex. Would be nice to have him back, but the idea of the Astros offering more money that what has already been offered is straight BS imo. IF they do offer more I agree with farmer. some will be deferred and hidden in a way just so Alex can save some face.

In the meantime there is zero reasons why the Astros should rush to get it done. It is obvious Alex isn't happy with any other offers he's gotten so he's the one in a tight spot with a decision to make. Not the Astros, who obviously hold all the leverage.
A lot of us are old enough to remember being Boras's pawn for Beltran to get his max deal with the Mets after the '04 season.

Definitely need to extend the offer and say, let us know.

Saying 6/156 is not enough is a ridiculous bargaining ploy. If he had a better offer that he was willing to take, it would be over already.

This is trying to squeeze Bad Crane to spend more from sentimentality.
I wonder if this is just an ego thing. We can up our offer to Bregman 6/190, but then when you get the details it breaks down to something like 6/110 with 80 M deferred from 2031 to 2040. The present value ends up around 6/155 M.
Why do that? I can see mortgaging the future of the franchise with deferred money to gain the necessary leverage to sign a key player you feel like you have to have that you can lock up long term and build a new championship run around. Bregman isn't that guy to me. 90% of his value at this point is sentimentality. We traded away a really good OF to get his replacement...so his value to us is greatly decreased; especially if we have to start moving guys around to places they have never played (and likely won't play well) to find a way to shoehorn him back into the lineup. Any deal he signs with us at this point should be team friendly or shouldn't happen at all.

Embarrassing for Bregman and Boras but not for the Astros

He lost a ton of leverage and the Astros circled back to see if it was doable based on the change of the market since their last go round.

I agree.

Bringing him back is an awkward fit given the updated construct of our roster but it sounds like we're willing to make it work. And we have a future Hall of Famer that is literally willing to change positions to accommodate him.

If he's still all about the extra $$ at this point, good riddance. The bad look is on him, not the Astros.

I'm still thinking a deal could get done and that some of the recent rumors are just last minute posturing. But I'm also happy to see us look elsewhere if Bregman is gonna make this difficult.

Keep the money and look for a trade at the deadline. OF or reliever, as needed.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

I try to work a Dubon-Melton-Arrighetti for Donovan. Sub in Blanco for Arrighetti if the Cards prefer him instead. I lowkey like Arrighetti's future more than Blanco anyways.

Then I try to dump Carantini for a lotto ticket much like we did Pressly and then sign Verdugo 2/14. I hate losing Carantini bat off the bench, but now these 2 moves give you much more flexibility and able to have more R/L options.

Would it too petty for the Astros to interrupt their meeting with Boras and pretend they are finalizing the deal for Arendando while Boras is sitting there?

I would not give up any current SP (in the current rotation) for Donovan. I know why he is appealing to many of you, but with Framber set to walk next year, trading any current SP would be foolhardy to me.

I wonder how much Alex is driving (beyond indicating basic desires) vs. allowing Boras to do his thing.

That's what I'm thinking. Alex probably is losing patience while Boras is playing the whole "trust me bro, it may take some time, but we will get you paid what you are really worth".

What would suck is not signing him and also losing the pick due to him not signing before the season with someone else.

If so, Altuve needs to give some friend advice andd tell Bregman that if he wants to be in Houston, tell Boras to stop screwing around and get it done as Altuve has done in the past.

If he is still wanting to play games out of pure ego, even when his market has failed to materialize and the Astros are talking to him again despite having no longer having positional need, then don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

I wouldn't say he doesn't want to be here. I think he's hung up on getting higher AAV than where he was.

I think it's fair to hear when talks are happening again that Bregman may have "come to his senses" and get a little bit excited for that.

Then you read, if it's accurate, he's turning down $156/6yr because it's $26M instead of $28.5M and it's pretty easy to be like, well, bye.

I do wonder if the $156/6yr doesn't work at this point because of opt-outs.

I'm still ok if the Astros move on from him.

Do you know if they have met with Alex yet? Wondering if Heymans comment is him rehashing the past or more of an indicator of how their meeting went

I'm going to guess that the other 6 year offer he has is from Toronto. I highly doubt he wants to go there because he would not win there long term.
