Shows the difference between him and the greats...Nolan was getting a blister his middle finger. He would get it lanced, soak it in pickle brine, and throw 150+ pitches and a complete game in his next start.

Tropicana Field is really one of the least accessible ballparks for fanbase to get to plus it's just a terrible environment. They need to figure out some what to put a new stadium next door to Raymond James where the Bucs play.

There is an even better one about Pete and Nolan told by Mike Schmidt in Nolan's book Throwing Heat. In the book, Nolan was talking about how a few weeks after the season he couldn't even remember what his W-L record was. But he said Pete Rose was a fanatic for stats and so forth. I forget which milestone Pete was going for, but when asked by somebody in the media when he thought he would get it, he said "It will probably be on such and such night, against Nolan Ryan". Well, that day came and Pete needed 3 hits and lo and behold he was set to face Nolan that game. He got hits the first two at bats, and Nolan got determined that there was no way Pete was going to get a hit off of him to achieve the milestone. He struck him out every time he faced him for the rest of the game, and the next day the players strike started. Pete had to wait until play resumed weeks later and the first game they played was the All Star Game. Pete and Mike Schmidt were in the clubhouse when Nolan walked in. Mike said "Hey Pete, your buddy Nolan is here!". Pete turned and looked, then flipped him off and turned back around. He hadn't forgotten for a second who had made him wait to get that milestone.

Good memory. The record was breaking Stan Musial's mark for NL career hits.

On Aug. 10, 1981, in the first game back following a players' strike that lasted nearly two months, Rose hit a single through the hole on the left side for the Phillies in the eighth inning against the Cardinals. It was career hit No. 3,631 to surpass the NL all-time record previously held by Hall of Famer Stan Musial.

Rose put The Man in the rear view mirror like Rickey once did to Lou Brock

Now (NL only) it's
Rose 4,256
Musial 3,630
Aaron 3,600
Honus Wagner 3,420
Willie Mays 3,293

The league career records are mostly gone by the wayside with so much interleague play, but Biggio is 8th all-time in the NL in hits. Paul Waner is 6th at 3,151 and Tony Gwynn is 7th at 3,141. Biggio is at 3,060.

To be honest, Charlotte and Nashville should both have a MLB team.

The SEC footprint in general needs more a couple more teams simply because the massive shift in population to the south.

Oakland leaving California is a good start and I thought Vegas was the best next location for them. I still want CA to lose another though; 5 teams has been absolutely ridiculous for a very long time. Cali and Texas both having 3 feels right to me.

Nashville, Charlotte and Central Texas are all great locations for relocation and coming expansion, but I don't think there's any way all 3 of the next changes are geographically south like that. Should be, but won't due to politics and / or optics.

I can't see either us or the Rangers letting that happen. Even with TV stuff being so fractured it's still better than losing the market in totality.

I believe that was in 1981. I remember that. Never gets the recognition like Bird vs Magic and some other great on great duels. If memory serves, Ryan threw nothing but fastballs after the first 2 hits. I think it was to tie Musial's National League career hits record, btw.

SA seems at least possible, but the sips will never, ever allow a pro team in Austin.

San Antonio would be cool. I love that city and would make for a fun weekend trip for a lot of baseball fans across the nation.

Nashville, San Antonio, Salt Lake and Charlotte would be my votes for a new team

The state of Texas does not need another baseball team. If baseball wants to move a franchise they'd be better off in new markets.

I think the "nothing but fastballs" was a different story in the book. Might have been when he was talking about calling his own pitches or something like that. Was a late season game and neither team was in contention. Nolan told him he was throwing nothing but fastballs and Pet fouled off like 8 pitches. They differed on the outcome, Nolan thought he had got him out eventually and Pete thought he got a single.

Throwing Heat is an excellent book by the way...tons of anecdotes from guys that played with and against Nolan over the years. The stories about Norm Cash crack me up.
