Max Scherzer tells us that his thumb is giving him problems again after hitting the 50-pitch mark.
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) March 17, 2025
Scherzer spoke about how critical the thumb is to a pitcher's arm health, citing 2023 and 2024 as examples where a similar issue led to other injuries elsewhere. #BlueJays
Shows the difference between him and the greats...Nolan was getting a blister his middle finger. He would get it lanced, soak it in pickle brine, and throw 150+ pitches and a complete game in his next start.EastCoastAgNc said:Max Scherzer tells us that his thumb is giving him problems again after hitting the 50-pitch mark.

There is an even better one about Pete and Nolan told by Mike Schmidt in Nolan's book Throwing Heat. In the book, Nolan was talking about how a few weeks after the season he couldn't even remember what his W-L record was. But he said Pete Rose was a fanatic for stats and so forth. I forget which milestone Pete was going for, but when asked by somebody in the media when he thought he would get it, he said "It will probably be on such and such night, against Nolan Ryan". Well, that day came and Pete needed 3 hits and lo and behold he was set to face Nolan that game. He got hits the first two at bats, and Nolan got determined that there was no way Pete was going to get a hit off of him to achieve the milestone. He struck him out every time he faced him for the rest of the game, and the next day the players strike started. Pete had to wait until play resumed weeks later and the first game they played was the All Star Game. Pete and Mike Schmidt were in the clubhouse when Nolan walked in. Mike said "Hey Pete, your buddy Nolan is here!". Pete turned and looked, then flipped him off and turned back around. He hadn't forgotten for a second who had made him wait to get that milestone.DoitBest said:txags92 said:Shows the difference between him and the greats...Nolan was getting a blister his middle finger. Good memory. The record was breaking Stan Musial's mark for NL career hits.txags92 said:There is an even better one about Pete and Nolan told by Mike Schmidt in Nolan's book Throwing Heat. I believe that was in 1981. I remember that. Never gets the recognition like Bird vs Magic and some other great on great duels. If memory serves, Ryan threw nothing but fastballs after the first 2 hits. I think it was to tie Musial's National League career hits record, btw.txags92 said:There is an even better one about Pete and Nolan told by Mike Schmidt in Nolan's book Throwing Heat. I can't see either us or the Rangers letting that happen. Even with TV stuff being so fractured it's still better than losing the market in totality.

I think the "nothing but fastballs" was a different story in the book. Might have been when he was talking about calling his own pitches or something like that. Was a late season game and neither team was in contention. Nolan told him he was throwing nothing but fastballs and Pet fouled off like 8 pitches. They differed on the outcome, Nolan thought he had got him out eventually and Pete thought he got a single.Ag4life80 said:I believe that was in 1981. I remember that. Justin Verlander gets a loud ovation and tips his cap after striking out Luis Robert Jr. on a 96.5-mph fastball on his 78th pitch of the game. He gave up 3 hits and struck out 6 in five shutout innings vs. the White Sox, looking like the Verlander of old.
