Just spitballing, but I wonder if Dana would be interested in signing someone like Harrison Bader and then using Meyers as part of a trade for a pitcher. Bader should get a 2/3 year deal at 10m per, meaning he'd cost about $7m more than Jake. With a total of $20 to spare, that would still leave cap room- especially if Dana is looking for a young, controllable starter. It doesn't help the RH-heavy lineup, but it would potentially avoid a hole in CF.

It might fit with squeezing in another run before the window closes.

I was told a couple weeks ago by someone well connected that the expectation is the Mets

That makes sense. I actually like that he's right handed. He could pair with Melton/Cole.

Right now, you could run out a lineup with Alvarez, Sanchez, Cole, and/or Melton. That is your DH and entire OF potentially. I don't think we're going to have the same RHH issue, especially if we add someone like Donny or Lowe (longshots, I know)

I just hope we embrace the platoon and Espada is aggressive with the splits and subs.

The problem is not that Crane doesn't spend. It's that he doesn't spend wisely, and gets poor return for where he does spend:
- LMJ
- Montero
- Abreu
- Walker
- Correa (sorry, love the guy, but offensively he's not worth what he's getting paid anymore)
- JV (2020-2021, the egregious farm cost to trading for him in 2023)

Crane has spent smart money too.

The first 2 Altuve extensions were great. Yordan is under a cheap deal. Bregman got 2 extra years. Morton was super cheap. Extending Pressly and Gurriel mostly worked. Brantley was good money spent, twice. The 2nd JV deal was excellent (before the 2nd trade). Hader may end up working out, which is kind of crazy to think for 5/95.

Hader has been awesome so far. As long as he stays healthy that is a great contract.

Folks need to be patient re: offseason acquisitions since trades currently appear to be the main route for this team, and it's been posted here about things moving very slowly across MLB on that front.

Some team like Seattle or San Diego may swoop in and give up too much for someone we're also after, but I'm still confident this team can return to the postseason.

Carrabis seems pretty convinced that Breggy is signing with AZ.

He would know. He and Breggy are tight. Or he knows the Red Sox know they're right, so he's trying to light a fire under them and help his buddy get leverage.

What could've been, Mr Chomp... I'll never forget his Game 5 catch in Philly!

I prefer to think of it as 'what was'. He accomplished a lot here compared to any expectations, as he wasn't a pedigreed prospect. He'll always have that catch, and ring.

Yep. I remember when he was called up to be the pinch runner off the bench in the 2020 playoffs and I was thinking "who the hell is this scrub!"

He surpassed all expectations and is written in Astros lore forever.

Best of luck, Chas!

That is fair. He just had some real flashes of promise and really big moments in games only to just completely fall off the cliff in 2024/2025 (probably 2023 too). Just wish it would have worked out better for him here.

2022 ALCS homeruns, World Series potentially saving catch, and a great 2023 run (that homer off Chapman is still one of my favorites)

Thank you Chas

One of my fav baseball pictures of all time. Incredible catch and the aftermath of that catch is awesome.

His homer off Gerrit Cole in the ALCS is probably a greater accomplishment than 90% of players get in the postseason. It sucks that even parlaying that into a better offensive year in '23, he couldn't continue building here, but a fresh start could be for the best. Baseball is such a grind.

Found these cool relics at my mom's house recently. The 45 record of "Go Go Astros" isn't that rare, but I had never seen the Colt .45s Sixshooter Club card before. Looks like it belonged to my uncle, who would've been around 9 or 10 years old in 1964.

Chase Field is the third best park for doubles and the best for triples, even topping Coors Field. For Breggy, that just means more doubles. His HR total would probably dip a little, but he might hit a career high in doubles.

That is not how I took it from his podcast. More like, very real possibility. Nothing is done. Red Sox need to have a more sense of urgency.

Never seen this. Totally awesome. No one misses the days when pitchers hit in the lineup, but it sure did keep them more accountable for throwing at dudes.

I posted this on the Baseball-Reference thread several months ago, but it is a great complimentary story to the post and your point.

Dodgers are playing the Phillies in 1960. Drysdale pitching against Robin Roberts. Drysdale plugs a couple of the Phillies so Philadlephia's manager - Gene Mauch - who I guess lived to be about 300 years old since he was also managing the Angels in the 80s - tells Robin Roberts - hit Drysdale when he comes up.

Robin Roberts is buddies with Drysdale and won't do it, do Mauch yanks him out of the game and puts Turk Farrell (future Astro) in the game with the express instruction to hit Don Drysdale with a pitch.

Farrell is so nervous he throws the first one 10 feet over Drysdale's head. Mauch comes up on the top step of the dugout and yells, " I SAID HIT HIM!" so everyone knows it's coming.

Farrell is really nervous now and throws it right down the middle by accident. Drysdale hits a double into the gap. Gets to 2B and yells, "Hey, Farrell! There's your gotdamn brush back pitch!"

Farrell doesn't like being shown up, so he before the next pitch he turns like he's going to pick Drysdale off and pegs him in the back with ball and yells, "Hey Drysdale, there's your gotdamn double!"

Benches clear, Farrell is thrown out, etc.

Fast-forward to May 1961, Farrell is traded to the Dodgers.

He figures he better go try to nip the problem in the bud so first day there, he goes right to Drysdale and says, "Mr. Drysdale, I want to apologize for last year, I was just following my manager's orders and I lost my cool."

Drysdale shakes his hand, says he appreciates the apology, takes his hat off, reaches under the brim and takes out a folded piece of paper.

Unfolds it and Farrell sees a list of names - including his - on it. Drysdale take a pen and scratches out Farrell's name. Farrells says, "Uh, what is that?" Drysdale shrugs - "It's a list of guys I'm going to bean this year."
