Dodgers pony up big and that's the straw that breaks the back and forces significant change.

Just saying MLB might not recover from the next lockout as well as it had done previously.

Wonder if they'll cheer or boo him. They might be too dumb to not know he debuted after 2017
They love them some Mookie Betts, and he's admitted the Red Sox cheated in 2018. Manfred has ruined MLB for the next decade. What an ass kissing moron.
Free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto is close to re-signing with the Phillies, sources tell me and @MattGelb

JT Realmuto goes back to Phillies @ByRobertMurray 1st, Reportedly $45M, 3 years
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 16, 2026
I disagree. Teams are trying to avoid the 10 year mega deal. If you only want to give out 3 or 4 year deals you will have to give much higher annual compensation. I'd much rather pay 3-4 years for $150m than 10 years $400miBrad said:
These salaries are insane. Really across all professional sports. It's just dumb. And now college sports are falling in line with the absurd spending.

Main thing MLB has going for it is it's the primary major pro sport active during a large chunk of the non football part of the year.
A lockout driven, let's be honest, by the Dodgers and MLB's preferential treatment of that club might be a good reset.
When the Yankees and Mets are on the sympathetic side of things with where the sport is today you know things are f'd up.
It's like the Dodgers are trying to crash the bus so there will be a reset.
If we have a lockout, at this point would the fans even care?

If we want to compete, I think it's time to go the route of super early extensions. Let's go lock up Cam. If someone like Blueballs breaks out this year, let's get him extended an extra year or three. If we trade Paredes for a pre arb outfielder, same thing. Take some risks and guarantee we have these guys primes.

If we want to compete sounds like we need to have a $400,000,000 lineup

That's a lot of money to commit to a bad catcher who is only going to get worse with age.

It's $15MM less than we paid Walker or Captain Lou over the same 3 years.
Something interesting about the Ranger Suarez signing is the Red Sox are currently at 41 players on the 40 man.

Has be a trade coming at some point.

I wish we had done it with Hunter and Pena after 2024
This is why #MLB needs both a salary floor and a salary cap. The industry payroll differential is so exaggerated that half the teams literally have no-chance at a World Championship. pic.twitter.com/FVzw9YnDII

Sure but if we extend Tucker early, he's not a free agent yet. It's about keeping guys in their prime. I know the Dodgers look unbeatable, but they're going to age just like everyone else. Ohtani, Freeman, Betts, Snell, Glasnow, Diaz, Scott, & Muncy are all over 30. We might be singing a very different tune in 2 years.
The Phillies had agreed to Bo Bichette’s request for a 7-year, $200 million deal last night and believed they would sign him until the Mets swooped in with their 3-year, $126 million offer after losing out in in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes.

I just shake my head at the Dodgers being 50% more than the second place team and being basically $200MM over the CBT.
Here's a way to stop that. Take every single draft pick and all of their international pool money from them. Don't let them sign anyone. And do it for every year that they are like this.

Source confirms: Free-agent catcher Victor Caratini in agreement with Twins on two-year contract. First: @ByRobertMurray
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) January 16, 2026
This doesn't change much in the Astros' search for a backup catcher. They were interested in a reunion with Caratini, but knew he'd probably get more lucrative offers elsewhere with more playing time involved. Adding a veteran to compete with César Salazar remains the goal. https://t.co/Moayp1Qjee

Tucker was never going to extend, we tried to many times
