I mentioned this the other day and got slammed for it. No one is hitting well but folks on here dismiss it as only being spring training games. Doesn't seem to affect other teams and their veteran players.

I wasn't referring to Yordan specifically. It's the whole team collectively.

I really don't buy the "it's spring training" excuse. Hitters want to hit, and Yordan is as natural as they come. I don't think he's "trying out new stuff" like pitchers do in the spring. As someone else pointed out, most of the big hitters are hitting bombs in spring. Feeling eerily similar to last year, and we know how that went.

So a slow start to spring training means we'll once again have an unprecedented amount of players hit the IL?

Everyone ramps up at a different pace. How much live BP has Yordan or some of the other guys done? It takes reps to get their timing down and as long as they're on pace to get those by opening day, it doesn't really matter where they are on March 7.

And hitters do try things in spring training. Sometimes they're subtle tweaks. Sometimes it's like Walker testing out a different load. But mostly, it's just getting used to seeing 95+ mph again mixed with off speed.

Pitching is typically ahead of hitting at this point in spring.

Takes a little while to get timing and mechanics worked out.

I'm not saying he was good but there were problems than him. He should never have been in the 4 hole. Unfortunately a canopener tipped over on the power hitter's knuckle and caused him to miss 114 games and apparently he wasn't fully recovered by the start of ST.

someone explain this to Dana and Joe...

when then Astros have a stretch of 16 games in 16 days (or similar)...

instead of going to a 6-man and destroying your bullpen (like last year)...

call up a AAA pitcher for a spot start in the middle of the long stretch...and that will magically prevent your rotation from going thru multiple turns on 4 days rest

why is this so difficult for the organization to understand?

How does a call-up differ from adding a 6th starter in terms of saving the bullpen? Who are you optioning when you call up this pitcher for the spot start and what are you doing after his start? What if you want to do this twice during a long stretch of games?

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning. Are you saying to only have 1 start by the "other" pitcher (6th starter or AAA guy) in this scenario of 16 straight games?
