"Normal buildup". Why does that sound bad?

It's no big deal, I get the same thing in my sink due to hard water. Just pour some drano down him and flush with warm water.

Rough first inning for Alexander. He's had two changeups hit out to right field for homers aided by the wind

That was terrible throw to home from CF Brice Matthews.

0-3, but I like seeing the EV's from Cole.

105.8 on the flyout (barrel) - .850 xBA
101.7 on the lineout - .650 xBA
101.4 on the groundout - .300 xBA

Woah Riley Unroe draws the thirteenth walk of the day on a 3-1 pitch that was an overturned called strike.

Trammell ends the inning on a grounder, so we're playing for a tie in Port St. Lucie.

One of the most interesting parts of ST, for me, is seeing the pitchers' new stuff, mixes, pitches, etc.

Here is Burrows' mix compared to last season.

4 Seam 25% / 39%
Changeup 25% / 24%
Sinker 25% / 6% - all vs RHH
Curve 13% / 12% - all vs RHH
Slider 13% / 20%

Only 24 pitches, but I think the plan is clear. He's going to attack RHH very differently this season. That was a weakness last year.

They love Cole. Dana especially.

(Usage in his first ST game) / (2025 Usage)

I just noted that the sinkers and curves were used to attack RHH in the one ST game.

Next year there should be a rule where if an ump misses so many calls in a row they're tossed lol

This is going to get ugly. I can see some guys just having a brutal challenge record.

Ron Kulpa will definitely melt down at some point. I'll never forget his ump show with Cole on the mound

The older umps who are so drunk on their own power will not be able to handle it. I bet we see several retire before the ASB.

I think we need to have some nicknames for 3 or 5 in a row missed, like "he completed the angel with his 5th miss in a row."

Just imagine every single playoff series that ends in a called strike is going to have that call challenged from now until the end of time.

Try every game... Regular season, playoffs, there's no reason not to

I wonder how long it takes for umps to just cede control to ABS as it's not with it anymore. Being a not a strike by less than 1mm is crazy. That's a guy leaning over slightly more in their stance, etc.

It's almost like this is the least efficient way to do things. Why not fully automate the balls and strikes? The ump at home is there for fouls, hit by pitch, plays at home, etc.

Right, but imagine Game 7 of the WS ending with based-loaded called third strike that sends 50,000 people into hysterics, only to have the hitter challenge it and it gest overturned for a Ball 4 to walk in the tying run.

Feels like teams should tell the hitters to never challenge at all until the 9th inning and hitters shouldn't swing at anything close with the game on the line

I think to keep the gamesmanship of it. This keeps the catchers ability to frame a pitch relevant and places more value on catchers who have a good knowledge of the strike zone.

That's just my opinion of it though. I like this system.

I'll take the walks drawn so far, of course, but let's wait until we're seeing major league arms with our 26 man roster in a week or two

(having patient hitters in the minor leagues would seem to be a good trait, in any case)

I hate the "gamesmanship" of it because it is way too easy for the "gamesmanship" to evolve into partisanship, where one team gets the calls and another team doesn't. The Ump Scorecards over the past few seasons have proven that the Astros have consistently been on the wrong side of the "gamesmanship" when it comes to calling balls and strikes. I still remember how powerless and demoralizing it felt watching all the Atlanta pitchers in the 80s getting those pitches well outside the zone called strikes just based on their reputation, while the Astros pitchers always got squeezed.
