Ballgame. Another bad loss.

If Joe is still in charge tomorrow I'll be shocked.

I've been saying that lately but at this point it wouldn't surprise me if he stuck around for awhile longer. That's solely based off of the total lack of urgency that surrounds the team.

Kevin Alvarez at 80 and Xavier Neyens at 99 are the only Astros prospects in the new top 100.

Espada should be gone if the Arlingtons come to Daikin Park and sweep the series. His lack of aggressive offense is intolerable- no bunts when the infield plays back, no hit and runs to get the defense moving, limited stolen base tries, etc. I think Omar would elevate the energy on offense by implementing the above instead of the plodding station to station offensive strategy that is currently run by Espada.

Have to add in "Espada Watch" to Astros Bingo - is Joe Espada's managerial record above .500 at the end of the season / when he's fired.

Right now he's 192-176 overall.

Not including the golden era of Tom Lawless going 4-9, Bo Porter was the last Astros' manager to leave with a % under .500 for his time with the Astros:

Got this off AI, but it seems accurate and doesn't include interims

Harry Craft, 191-280
Luman Harris, 70-120
Grady Hatton, 164-221
Harry Walker, 355-353
Leo Durocher, 98-95
Preston Gomez, 125-161
Bill Virdon, 544-522
Bob Lillis, 276-261
Hal Lanier, 254-232
Art Howe, 392-418
Terry Collins (barf), 224-197
Larry Dierker, 435-348
Jimy Williams, 215-197
Phil Garner, 277-252
Cecil Cooper, 171-170
Brad Mills, 171-274
Bo Porter, 110-190
AJ Hinch, 481-329
Dusty Baker, 320-226
Joe Espada, 191-175

So except for the rebuilding years, the Astros only manager to go less than .500 was Art Howe (.484), dating back to Preston Gomez in the mid 1970s.

I'm trying to look back at how we got to this point. I've tried to go back and list out all the trades/FA signings during Dana's time. I'm not listing what went out the door, just what came in. If I'm missing someone, please feel free to add to this.

It's a very ugly, expensive and amazingly unproductive list. I mean, almost everyone on this list is either a complete bust, a partial bust, or just plain INC.

It's pretty simple. We are in horrible shape in large part because Dana/Crane have been mostly horrific at bringing players in who have contributed.

In no particular order.

Captain Lou Abreu - complete bust

Walker - year 1 partial bust, year 2 very good. It's pretty clear he tried to be a trooper and play through a bad oblique pull last year. It really hurt the team when he did.

Hader - Year 1 very good until the inevitable arm injury. That may have cost the playoff spot last year, not having a shut down closer. Year 2 so far a bust. If you can't play, it's a bust.

Collection of BP arms to include Okert, King, Sousa, Teng, De Los santos, et al - credit where credit is due, this is mostly been good. Some stinkers, but overall, the arms have been good. Good and overworked badly.

Wesneski - TJ almost immediately. A bust.

Imai- looking like a big Japanese sack of wet soba noodles. I want to say INC and give him the benefit of time, but this is looking like a bigtime bust.

Sanchez - Bust. I mean this was a Miami Beach 44DD in a 38B sized bikini bust. I wish we had Gusto back.

Trading Loperfido, only to trade back for him and watch him go on the IL - this was weapons grade stupid to trade him and trade back for him. Someone should lose their job for this cock up alone.

JV part 2 - this hurts me. It pains me. It kills me. Bust.

Burrows - poor ******* is a 4/5 having to be a 2. At least he's eating innings. Average.

The INF dude from Baltimore last year who players so little I never learned his name. Says it all. Bust.

Cam Smith - he is looking like headed to be a bust. 600 ML ABs and he's currently batting .202 with an OPS of .630. He should never have been on the ML roster last year and he's paying the price big time now. Sending him down now would be a big ugly admission of failure all around and I'm not sure anyone has it in them to do that.

ESock - spectacular. He was the shining bright spot until he blew out his leg muscles. I'm not sure he's recovered fully.

Collection of SPs to include Lambert, Alexander, Gordon, Bolton - not sure where we finish last year without these guys. Or this year. Grades of very good, especially given the expectations.

Allen - INC/Bust. INC because he's been injured, bust because what little he played he was a defensive ****show. And he replaced a defensive genius.

Shewmake - someone eventually had to be better than advertised and it's him. He's a crystal chariot waiting to turn back into a pumpkin.

Trammell - average relief OF. Injured. Not going to wow anyone and had no real expectations. He met those expectations.

Harris and Johnson this season. Bust and bust. Can you be a bust when you are a crappy street level FA that no one else wants?

if I had to make a list (right now) of the top 3 reasons the golden era ended...

1. Abreu contract
2. LMj extension
3. hiring of Espada

the wasted money on Abreu & Lance is staggering -- tremendous opportunity cost

they combined to make $36 MM in 2023; and $38 MM in 2024 and 2025 -- just awful

I would add the Montero contract along with the Abreu contract.

Don't forget the bad luck of signing Javier to extension and then him immediately blowing out his arm and never being the same again.

I think he was hurt in the playoffs in 2023 and nobody said anything. The games he pitched against Texas his velo was way down but they just said he was tired from never pitching that many innings before. Then he blows out his arm the beginning of 2024.

Edit to add he also signed the extension in early 2023 after throwing a combined no hitter in the World Series.

Hader is in year 3.

I feel like our international signings haven't panned out as much since Ocampo left in 2020.

Not sure what it says that I totally forgot Hader was here 2 years. Other than it wasn't that memorable.

It's more that Ocampo. It feels like the whole brain trust left. It feels like we went from NASA/JPL engineers to Estes Rocket salesmen.

Astros' run differential is -48 through 45 games. Worst in the majors, 3 ahead of San Fran.

That's a pace of -176 for the season. Food for thought - the worst 3 seasons of run differential in franchise history are:

2013: -235
2012: -211
2011: -181

In other words, 2026 appears to be a rebuilding year, except nobody told Jim, Dana, or Joe.

Astros Bingo Update 5-15-2026

Reason to Smile:
Yordan located his balls last night and hit his 14th homer, putting him back on pace for 50.
Alex Bregman's OPS drops under .700.
Ummmm. It's Friday?

Reasons to Barf:
Yordan is on pace to have the second-fewest RBI in MLB history for a guy who hits 50 HR in a season. He's on pace for 108. The record is 110 by Brady Anderson. Anderson mostly hit leadoff. But I'm told our offense is just great.
Jose Altuve has stopped hitting home runs. His pace is currently 11. The last time he hit fewer than 15 in a full season was 13 in 2018 when he played hurt the whole year but still hit .316.

Question of the Day: Is it too early to start calling Braden Shewmake the new George Brett now that he's hitting .389?

And now, the newest sensation, sweeping the nation.

Day 5 spotlight: Wabs

Current Bingo Score: 1
Place: Tied for 4th with 50 other people
Squares Achieved: Rangers suck and that's it
Predicted Astros record: 84-78. Just need to finish the year 67-50 (.573)

Squares that look like future wins:
No playoffs. Guy's a goddarn genius!
Diaz < 20 HR. On pace for a gaudy SEVEN.
Altuve < 22 HR
Hunter < 14 W. Pace down to 4. Imai is on the same pace. The difference is that Hunter has been hurt for 6 weeks

Squares that are technically still humanly possible:
80-84 wins Current pace 61
Seattle > 90 wins Current pace 79
Jake > .280
Yordan < 125 G
Hunter > 3.00 ERA if he comes back and sucks
Bregman > 20 HR Never mind that he's only got 4 while playing every single game.
Joey Baseball > 100 G

Squares that haven't aged so well:
Pena SB lead - At this point, maybe we should change the category to "Pena, more than 1 stolen base"
Pena All-Star Game buying a ticket doesn't count

Dusty caught a lot of crap on this board, but he'll always have a special place in my heart. Granted, it took a lot to make up for how much I couldn't stand him when he was a Dodger. That applied to everyone from Lasorda on down back then, though.

The 2023 WBC combined with deep playoff runs the previous two season eventually caught up to Javier. Garcia and Urquidy were never the same either.

I'm just going to assume it was Jared Crane because I don't actually know what he does and everything has gone downhill since he became SVP.
