Yeah Nixon had two more years to play due to a redshirt and covid, but she decided to forego those two years. She had just graduated and was going to enroll to get her masters from A&M in communications, she just didn't want to play basketball anymore. Here's an (lengthy) but in-depth article from herself on the experience

https://andscape.com/features/texas-ams-jordan-nixon-its-ok-that-my-marriage-with-basketball-is-on-the-rocks%ef%bf%bc/

And then an article after it was known she wasn't returning for the 2022-2023 season

https://myaggienation.com/aggie_sports/basketball_womens/texas-a-ms-jordan-nixon-walks-away-from-basketball-to-a-bigger-challenge/article_dd0d339c-c8be-5467-86df-325e98f5b9d7.html

I'm a younger Ag and was a grad student there in San Antonio when she hit that buzzer beater! I loved watching her play and was extremely disappointed and hurt when I saw she wasn't gonna play again! I thought her and Janiah Barker would have been a great duo! But after hearing her reason's why, it was clear and obvious she made the best decision for herself! She suffered a lot of personal problems and loss through covid as well as injuries. She was a crazy good basketball player, but even more so an extremely intelligent young lady and she's going to do big things in any field she chooses!! Probably one of my favorite Aggies, regardless of sport!

Tonight we're playing with 5 or 6 fully healthy girls, there are currently 9 former Aggies at the top of my head that are currently playing elsewhere after transferring out. We signed 1 girl last year and picked up only 2 transfers. Recruiting is hard, but apparently so is simple subtraction and addition…

Janiah Barker - UCLA
Sydney Bowles - Florida State
Maliyah Johnson - Ball State
Zaay Green - Alabama
Eriney Kindred - Florida
Mya Petticord - Rutgers
Kay Kay Green - Charlotte
Kylie Marshall - SMU
Tineya Hylton - Cincinnati

Did not transfer elsewhere, but decided to retire and not rejoin the team - Jordan Nixon and Sydnee Roby.
Sydnee Roby was a MEDICAL retirement - I know, because I talked to her

Aw good to know. Hope she's doing well. I always enjoyed watching her play! She could finish well!

What do these schools have in common. They all currently have a higher NET Ranking in women's basketball than the Texas A&M University Aggies. Surely they must be outspending us in resources, NIL, coaching, and facilities.

Tennessee is in position to host in a coaches year 1, her first year as a power 4 coach. She overhauled the roster with transfers. This year they signed 5 ESPN 100 top recruits. We signed zero. In fact, Tennessee has signed more espn recruits in this class, then Joni Taylor recruited and has on this roster.

TCU is currently a top ten team in their coaches 2nd year. 2 years ago they held open tryouts cause they couldn't fill in a roster. They won 8 games, now they're on pace for 30+

Kentucky is a top ten team in their head coaches year 1. Last year they won 12 games, this year they'll get to 25

In today's world of the transfer portal, coaches don't need multiple years to be successful. Joni Taylor is 38-49, 11-35 in conference. Her latest recruiting class was arguably the worst in the conference. Maybe top ten in the state of Texas. What are we doing. Joni Taylor has been a division 1 coach for 10 years and she's won 3 tournament games while taking over for 2 historic and winning programs. Half of her conference seasons have had losing records, 3 of them in a row here at A&M where she's lost double digit conference wins each season.

It also took 2 years for Trisha Ford and Jamie Morrison to take our teams to the sweet 16. They both have signed top ten recruiting classes littered with elite talent, especially in state. Trisha Ford has a top 5 team currently in year 3, and Jamie Morrison is set to have a spectacular year 3 also.

Unfortunately not everyone thinks women's sports are important and many only consider the "big" three of men's sports as important. I personally want all sports to have championship caliber teams, however I don't have the money to make it happen. In women's basketball the teams that are successful have a rich history of success and/or money to support (NIL) their players. A&M doesn't have either of those for women's basketball.

Seems like we are missing a lot more than NIL. We are so far from being a competitive team it isn't even funny. This is just embarrassing. It is one thing to have a losing record, but when every game is a complete blowout. Just a sad state for the program.

Which of these schools have a better NIL system than Texas A&M University. And you can't discredit our history, we had an established winning program, a national championship winning program, for Joni to take over. Joni Taylor has been coaching in the SEC for 10 years, she has a losing record. We have the history, the resources, the facilities, an average coach could do better than what she's put together here. If the NIL wasn't enough, then why would she have taken this job? And why would should donors and alumni be the excuse for her poor roster management, poor recruiting, poor coaching, poor culture, and overall lack of success.

fitz - we can agree that money may be a small part of it (if the program was even treading water I think you'd see more support). However, we have too many examples on campus of coaches doing more with less (comparatively when looking at football, baseball, etc). Both tennis programs, softball, volleyball, golf, track and field - all of these programs have solid coaches with a passion to succeed at this school. Now, one could look at how patient we have been with Buzz and his program, but even in the lowest of lows, that man never stopped working and teaching and building. Can we honestly say we see that in Joni and her staff?

It's such an honor to represent your country and I do not disparage Joni for accepting that challenge. Good for her! But the reality is, and it's obvious, that has taken away from her focus of building and developing the program that pays her to do just that (especially during a transition after a rough year; she needed to be here and here ONLY). That was a bad call by Bjork; the blame falls on him.

Perhaps Joni put her trust in her assistants that just did not get the job done. Ultimately, that falls back on her. Great coaches find ways; recruit better; plan better; play better. When you watch our team play, these athletes have NO idea of what they are supposed to be doing (even this late in the season). They are very poorly coached and prepared, and the excuses are just free flowing. I couldn't tell you what offense we run from possession to possession.

Joni hasn't proven to be the candidate unfortunately. I'm sad for Gary Blair. Recruiting was falling off a bit, but he had one bad season (his last season). The reality is, there is no job in the world that would continue employment with these results. Especially a job that pays $1.5m per year.

Back from the dentist. I appreciate all the replies to my post.. I have been watching Aggie women's sports since they started under the AIAW organization and before they came under the umbrella of the NCAA. I had a sister that played basketball and softball for Kay Don until she graduated in May of 75. I moved to the midwest and continued to follow the Aggies. I went to Omaha to watch the Women's Softball College World Series when Bob Brock was coaching and saw our Aggies win 2 titles and finish runner-up 2 years.

It pained me to see Coach Blair stay a year or two too long, just to ride off into the sunset and yes, I enjoyed his run at A&M as the head coach and got to witness in person the 2011 Championship in Indianapolis. However, the last year he was coaching was terrible. I wanted to go after a sitting head coach with experience, such as Jeff Walz. Our AD did his thing and over paid for an average coach, but I was willing to give her a chance. Her staff has always concerned me and certainly her strength and conditioning program seems to be unproductive. Still to get players of SEC caliber I think we have to spend more money on the portal and high school recruits. I might be dreaming, but I thought I read somewhere Aggie women's basketball had a goal of $200,000.00 in NIL money and they fell short of reaching that. Does anyone know if that is true?

I don't know if Mr. Alberts will have any tough conversations with Joni, but I would hope he will once the season is over. We all know something needs to happen and happen sooner rather than later. The question is, will it happen?

Great insight, Fitz! I'm a long time supporter of women's sports at A&M as well. My basketball support goes back to the Cherri Rapp days, so you have me beat. I was also in Indy for our natty…,one of the best experiences of my life! Gary Blair took this program at its lowest point and took it to the pinnacle. I'll forever be grateful to him. But as you said, he stayed a year or two too long. Best case scenario in my mind was for Vic to take over for Gary. I was at A&M the same time as Vic, so I know him personally. He's a great person and obviously a tremendous coach. We don't win that NC without his brand of stifling, pressure defense. He loves A&M and I believe it would've been his dream job. Sadly, we waited too long and tu snatched him up. Water under the bridge now, but I'll forever regret that we didn't bring him home. Where does our program go from here? I don't see how Joni could possibly continue as our coach. If she couldn't get any recruits after making the tourney last season, how does she possibly get any after this train wreck of a season? It's sad and it's embarrassing. We've got to get a coach who's a proven winner and recruiter. I only hope better days are in our future.

That isn't the entire budget. That is the piece they were trying to raise for every player to get a nice amount. It doesn't include the star's payments.

Why? The job wasn't open when he was approached about Texas and he didn't know when Gary would retire so why shouldn't he take the $$$ being offered by tu? If Gary would have stepped down a couple of years after the Natty, I am sure Vic would have agreed to be the head coach.

I think history has shown that Vic was critical to our natty and if we had kept him, we might have one or more additional banners in Reed.

Whatever legacy Gary Blair left has been completely destroyed. The farewell tour year was totally unnecessary and got life after Gary off on the wrong foot. Now we just have to keep from repeating the Kermit Davis, Tony Barone and Melvin Watkins years in women's basketball like we did in men's basketball back in the day.

One good thing about todays environment in college sports is the portal. You don't have to rebuild a team from the ground up anymore by multiple recruiting classes.

NIL and the portal you can ramp up talent in a hurry if the coaching is there.

Right now we're lacking in everyway. But I think the right coach could reverse it quickly like we've seen at least in softball. I'm not saying we turn into South Carolina. But we sure can get back quickly as top 15 team. Look at TCU
