NIT Bound

I believe the larger schools play in the WBIT and the women's NIT is a bunch of small schools.

Aggies are a 1 seed in WBIT.

The Aggies play McNeese (28-5) in the first game. Up next would be San Diego St (25-5) or UC Irvine (26-6) if we win. Kansas would be most likely to be next.

The tournament includes:

BYU
Stanford
Utah
Missouri
Miami (FL)
Kansas St.
Seton Hall
Kansas
Cal
Wisconsin
Georgia Tech
Oregon St.

Now that is actually hilarious…

We've payed her approximately 6 million dollars and 4 years later this is where she's taken Aggie Women's Basketball… Gary Blair I am so sorry

You're apologizing to the Gary Blair who went below .500 his final season, 4-12 in conference, couldn't sniff the WBIT, and handed over this dumpster fire?

Yeah, sure, OK.

Yeah, sure, OK.

Mam or sir - you cannot be serious...his last year was rough because the administration allowed him to go on a celebration tour. It wasn't about winning. I was very hard on GB; took a lot of flack for it (looking at you greg), but the truth is, he had us competitive every single year besides his last. The year before that we were SEC champs and a 2 seed in the tournament (barely lost to an Arizona team that lost in the national championship game).

NOBODY wants to sniff the WBIT. Congrats to the team for continuing to play. We will all support them but it's a consolation prize at best.

At the end of the day, we all just want a competitive top-notch program again. I was encouraged a bit by the last month of play, but it's still nowhere near where it needs to be. Hopefully, in year 5, Joni will be well funded and can turn the corner and get us back into the NCAAs and beyond. If not, we have to move on from her.

You support the student athletes because they are sacrificing for you. Blair very much earned his tenure and without him you'd have nothing to complain about.

I think that used to be the case. Not sure they are sacrificing for us anymore with NIL involved. These days they can leave after one year. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that.

Yeah this used to be a respected winning program. Sorry he had one Joni Taylor-like season when his captain and best player was hurt, just a year after he reached the sweet sixteen and had many of his talented seniors graduate… but after 4 years, I suppose that's just the standard of this program nowadays.

I guess we just need to accept this new standard of Texas A&M Women's Basketball that Joni has established and Trev has accepted… seems like many fans already have

No- we just don't need to apologize to Gary Blair.

Who it no way left this program set up for success going forward.

Where does Texas A&M women's basketball program rank in comparison to other elite women's basketball programs on expenses and NIL funding?

Short answer:
Expenses: Texas A&M Aggies women's basketball spends roughly in the middle of the Power-conference tier competitive but below the top spending elite like South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball, UConn Huskies women's basketball, Texas Longhorns women's basketball, and LSU Tigers women's basketball.
NIL: A&M's overall athletic NIL ecosystem is top-10 nationally, but women's basketball specifically is believed to be mid-tier within the SEC rather than among the sport's biggest collectives.

Below is a clearer breakdown.
1. Texas A&M women's basketball operating expenses
Recent financial disclosures show:
FY2024 expenses: about $7.38 million
Revenue: about $1.22 million
Net deficit: about $6.16 million
This spending level matters because elite women's basketball programs typically fall into three budget tiers.
Typical spending tiers (public-school data)
Tier Programs Typical Annual Spending
Elite South Carolina, UConn, Texas, LSU $8-10M+
Competitive P4 Tennessee, NC State, Maryland, Baylor $6-8M
Lower P4 / strong mid-majors many Big 12/ACC programs $4-6M
Top NCAA tournament seeds average ~$6.7M in expenses, with the biggest programs exceeding $8M.
At ~$7.4M, Texas A&M sits roughly in the upper half of Power-conference spending but not top-tier elite.

Approximate expense comparison

Program Estimated annual spending
South Carolina ~$9-10M
Texas ~$8-9M
UConn ~$8-9M
LSU ~$8M+
Texas A&M ~$7.4M
Many P4 programs $5-7M
So A&M's resources are strong enough to compete nationally, but they are not at the very top of the financial arms race.
2. NIL ecosystem relative to other schools
NIL numbers are much harder to track because most deals are private, but we can estimate relative scale.
Overall NIL strength
Across all sports, estimates put Texas A&M's NIL collective funding around $17M annually, ranking top-5 nationally behind programs like:
Texas Longhorns athletics
Ohio State Buckeyes athletics
LSU Tigers athletics
This indicates a very powerful booster base and fundraising ability.
But women's basketball specifically
In women's basketball:
Top programs like LSU, South Carolina, Texas, and Iowa have very aggressive NIL collectives tied to star players and national TV exposure.
Mid-tier programs typically operate with hundreds of thousands to low-seven-figure NIL pools.
Example reference point:
At North Carolina Tar Heels women's basketball, the coach indicated ~$600k NIL was insufficient and that $1.5M+ was needed to compete nationally.
Texas A&M's women's basketball NIL pool isn't publicly reported, but industry insiders generally place it around the mid-tier of SEC programs, behind:
LSU
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas (now SEC)
But likely ahead of smaller-resource programs.
3. Why A&M still underperforms relative to resources

Despite solid funding, the program hasn't matched elite results because:

1 Coaching turnover: Program lost momentum after Gary Blair's retirement.
2 SEC competition: The conference contains several of the highest-funded women's programs in the country.
3 NIL visibility: Programs with superstar brands (Caitlin Clark era at Iowa, Angel Reese at LSU) have driven much larger NIL inflows.
4. Big-picture ranking of A&M women's basketball resources
Among ~360 D1 programs:
Top 10: South Carolina, UConn, LSU, Texas, Stanford, Tennessee
Top 20: includes Baylor, Maryland, Notre Dame, NC State
~Top 25:35 range: Texas A&M
That's roughly where their budget + NIL combination currently places them.
Bottom line:
Expenses: upper-tier but not elite (around top-25 nationally).
NIL ecosystem: strong overall for athletics but mid-tier within top women's programs.

Ceiling: With A&M's donor base and facilities, the program could realistically reach top-10 resource levels if the university prioritizes it.

Gary Blair retired about 5 years before he actually turned in his papers. You can both appreciate what he did and be disappointed in how he left.

Approximate expense comparison

Program Estimated annual spending
South Carolina ~$910M
Texas ~$89M
UConn ~$89M
LSU ~$8M+
Texas A&M ~$7.4M
Many P4 programs $57M
So A&M's resources are strong enough to compete nationally, but they are not at the very top of the financial arms race.

Dafuq is wrong with you?

I can promise you that South Carolina does not spend $910M on WBB. And that UCONN and Texas aren't spending $89M. And that no program is spending $57M.

I don't know how far up your ass you had to reach to make up those numbers, but they are somewhere between $75M and $900M off per team.

Did you actually type that with a straight face?

None of that can even be just a typo.

I just LOL = hold on...I chatGPT'd it. let me check the numbers. I didn't even read it. I just copied and pasted. Just wanted to see where we landed comparatively...

Updated a bit...copied and pasted and the dashes didn't transfer over.

Even ChatGPT isn't that stupid. Nobody is spending north of $10M, and you're out here trying to say "*MANY* P4 teams are spending $57M, and USCe is spending $910M"

Maybe read before you copy and paste.

Thanks for this contributions.

People are so stupid they might actually believe you.

Maybe we will be competitive if we spend $910m, too! LOL

I did read it initially - just didn't realize the -- didn't transfer over when I copied. That's what I meant.

Anyway - interesting to see. Basically says we are a 25-35 program based on net spend. Not quite there yet.

Our NIL last year was closer to $0 than "mid tier SEC". Oklahoma isn't even mentioned above and they have a couple of individual players making more than our entire roster.
