How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd like to move to a lower cost of living area where I can get more house for my money. I currently work remote so I can live anywhere I get high speed internet.

I know I want to stay in Texas and my wants are 2300-2600sq feet under 500k, high speed internet, less than an hour from an airport. My wife basically just needs Starbucks, HomeGoods, hobby lobby, target etc.

No kids so schools aren't an issue. We have family in the Dallas and Houston area but we only see them a few times a year so we don't have to be close to them.

On paper some of the new homes around Conroe seem like a good fit but I thought I would post here and cast a wider net.

Bryan College Station checks all those boxes. Maybe a little over an hour to an airport but not much.

Alpine. Although maybe smaller than what you're looking for.

And it is much further than 1 hour from an airport.

How about around San Angelo or Abilene? Both have airports all be it small airports.

Lubbock, forget the Tech part. Great town. Good airport. Closer to the mountains and 4 seasons.

I have friends up there and would love being close to the Palo Duro Canyon. Nice suggestion

Anywhere near San Antonio (Boerne, Hondo, Castroville, Bandera) are nice small towns with good communities and should be in that price range. Boerne maybe not. Close to hill country area like Concan, Utopia, but not crowded like Fredericksburg/Kerrville. And same distance to Dallas and Houston.

Do NOT move anywhere near Houston. Too hot and too humid.

And Dallas. Too . . . .

I'd consider Lockhart and Temple.

Almost hate to say it, but Waco has become a pretty nice place. And the price of rural land outside Waco has not gone wacko like many other areas of Texas.

My notion is that people from OOS ran up prices in the metro areas. Once property taxes reflect market over the next few years, OG Texans in the metros are going to keep flooding into places like Temple and Waco.

You might have a hard time staying in your budget, but If I had your criteria, I would look for something in the hill country. West of Austin is out of your price range (and Fredericksburg too). My thought would be around Canyon Lake area, It's far enough from San Antonio and Austin to not have ridiculous prices, but close enough to New Braunfels to for amenities.

My only thing is why do you want to be close to an airport?

If it's because you want to travel internationally, or even all over the US, and often, then being close to Lubbock won't do much good seeing as you'll just have to fly to another hub and have a layover almost every time you travel....

If you fly once a year but just hate driving that extra layover time may not matter to you.

If you fly to Dallas and Denver, for example, because of family then Lubbock would be a perfect airport.

I mostly travel in the US and like to take trips 3-4 times a year. Most of the time I fly out of DAL so a regional airport would likely work.

I'll probably post something on the Houston board soon to figure out what is wrong with Conroe. I was a boy scout growing up and the old camp strake area has some nice looking planned communities but the prices seem suspiciously too good to be true.

Bryan is cheaper for electricity and water plus the bonus of less student traffic.

East of Austin would fit that criteria too. Pflugerville, Hutto, Manor, Bastrop, up through Taylor.

$500k gets you more then you think still. I think you could live pretty much anywhere in Texas, you may just have to be a little creative with the suburb.

Lumberton fits. There are a bunch of little towns in setx that fit. My inlaws caught a flight from Boston to jack brooks Airport in Nederland. Target and all those other stores are a 20 minute drive from Lumberton

Having lived in Lumberton and currently living in Bastrop, I would find a spot between Austin, Houston and SA triangle that best meets your needs.

We really enjoyed our time in Lumberton. It is simply not close enough to a major city to support travel and shopping. Throw in the annual hurricane excitement and SETX is no longer on my list of places in which to live.

Yep and Bryan water is better than CS.

Denton is a good option. Cool little town. Great music scene. Dfw airport 25 -30 min away

This is my way of thinking too. I'm spoiled being less than 30 minutes from 2 major airports in Houston...but I HATE connections and avoid them if at all possible. They just make travel days much more long and stressful. I've started thinking of where to move when I'm done with the big city (which I feel is getting more and more imminent) and it's going to be hard to be too far away from Houston if still in Texas (Dallas not an option). Even SAT and AUS connect on most flights except regional.

Back in the day, no one wanted to live in small towns because there was usually nothing there.

That's really changed.

Today, a lot of smaller towns have thriving restaurant/bar scenes that go way beyond what you find in most suburban communities, where chains proliferate.

I'd move to Boerne, Brenham, etc., in a heartbeat. The trick is identifying which smaller town is poised for a downtown revitalization before the rest of Houston figures it out and prices you out.

Did I hear you say Navasota?

This. We will soon be relocating to Washington County outside of Brenham. Just over an hour to Houston (without traffic) and 1.5 hours to Austin. Plus close to College Station.

I completely agree and that's how I targeted for my house. I would say find a small town outside your favorite large city that is turning over.

What about Salado?
Great small downtown. Easy proximity to Bergstrom down 130

access to temple, Waco, Georgetown, Austin

Downside is you gotta deal with 35 and the eventual blob from temple to Austin
Choward4

I recommended Lubbock but live in Salado. We love it but the real estate is much more expensive than Temple/Belton. Closer to Georgetown prices as a heads up.
