I used to putt with a 2i on long putts or from just off the green. Worked really well most of time too. However, if you're the type of putter who can't see the line well unless your eyes are over the ball, it's probably not a great idea.

Best advice that I ever got and has helped me keep the ball in play and lower scores is "Let the club do the work". I know each club distance and just make good contact. I do not try and kill the ball.
