The guy that designed that course was a Golf Course Superintendent with no training in course design. I only played it a couple of times, but thought he did a tremendous job.Prexys Moon said:I'm from the area. Twin Lakes. Gorgeous course and lots of great memories there. The story there is, after the big Canton tornadoes in April 2017, there was a provision in the law that a landowner could immediately reclassify property taxes to Ag after a disaster like that, instead of doing the gradual phase in (I think it normally takes 10 years?). So the owners took advantage of that. Great pro at the time, Randy Wade, he is now at the Tempest in Gladewater which is a similar course, daily fee but very nice property. Randy had a great junior program and my kids learned golf from him. Just a solid gold guy and the Tempest is worth a trip out to Gladewater.TMfrisco said:
Rolling Hills CC in Arlington

9 Hole McKinney CC
Great Southwest in Arlington - probably the only loss in this list
Periodically I will drive out there. Seeing it as just pastureland with cows all over it makes me ill. I remember in June of 17, getting the email that they were closing and it was a real gut punch.

Nothing spectacular but it was nice with a lot of holes along Leon Creek. It had one of the finishing holes way up on the bluff and you hit down toward the clubhouse, usually some really good air traffic in the area. A number of holes were built on the old landfills so they had natural swales in the fairway as well as the cart paths. A small rad disposal area was marked off, but it was just off the women's tee box. Even as a contractor, good cheap golf and beers after.DargelSkout said:Tony Franklins Other Shoe said:
Kelly AFB. Really liked the layout.
I forgot about that one. I think I played it many years ago, but I don't remember much about it.

Trinity Forest was a bust as a "Tournament Course", but it is thriving as a Private Golf Club.

for you guys who are much more attuned to this stuff, I wonder, are there courses in the same general geographic area and same price range that have opened up to offset these closures or are we talking about a net loss of available golf to the general public?

Twin Lakes was a fantastic course. Arguably the best course in the state for the price. I LOVED playing it.
Opening tee shot on #1 was gorgeous. The short par 3 with the three tiered green was a ***** if you were above the hole. #18 was a great finishing hole.
Just a beautiful, well kept challenging course, but also fair and open off the tee.
