Interesting timing on Phil's leave of absence. He always seems to front run trouble.

It's funny I saw a tweet that said "this is not a reflection of LIVs commercial performance."

Of course it's a reflection of their performance. If it was a money printing machine, they wouldn't be shutting it down.

I've never really understood Norman's hate for the PGA tour. Seems like he was operating with a vendetta

He always was. Years ago, he wanted to the tour to have a more global presence and came up with his own World Golf Tour but couldn't get any traction and then the tour came up with the World Golf Championships, basically taking his idea and making it their own. He's had it out for the tour since then.

Goes back a long time to when he wanted to start a "world tour" of the best players playing big venues for big money. He was rebuffed at a meeting when Arnold Palmer basically said we have to stick with the PGAT and stay loyal, not play some other tour. Ever since then he's had an axe to grind.

And a lot of this could have been avoided if Monahan had spoken with Saudis too. He should share some blame in this mess, not just Norman/LIV IMO.

Monahan did a lot of things wrong but not being open to partnering with a foreign government immediately after they were involved in killing a journalist wasn't really one of them.

People continually lose track of what was actually going on in the world when those initial overtures were made. No financially sound and scandal free institution would have wanted to get in bed with the Saudi government at that time. Particularly something like a sports league which has no ties to them at all.

In hindsight, one of the best things Monaghan did was come to an understanding with the pif without settling on anything. That allowed the pga to wait out LIV and watch it wither. Watching LIV early on was fine because they were going heads up against weaker pga events. But last year they started going up against heavier pga events like Phoenix or the players and that was a bad business decision.

It'll be interesting to see the various options for the players who departed to LIV.

For some cases, you had people like Sergio who pretty much denigrated the tour on his way out. On the other hand, you people like Joaquin, Varner, etc. who didn't piss on the PGAT when they departed.

Either way, I expect golf media will paint this as the death of the evil Saudi empire league versus the victory of the gracious, benevolent PGAT.

It will be a win for the PGA Tour however the events unfold regarding LIV potentially shutting down

With the Reed precedent set (1-year suspension from last LIV start), I wonder if we'll see guys try and get out of any remaining tourneys LIV may hold to get the clock started?

This. Intentional or not, it was genius. The PGAT bought time to circle the wagons on players and sponsors to slow/stop the onslaught, and then just let LIV bleed out until the Saudis tired of burning cash

This is a good point. I lean toward it being unintentional though. I have a hard time believing Monohan was playing 3-D chess at this high a level.

I'll edit to add that I don't think this was the original plan. I do think after PE got involved, they probably did land on this as the strategy at some point. Precisely when, who knows.

Maybe not, but ultimately, they fended off a bottomless pit of cash behemoth willing to blow billions without any hope of making $$$. Not many businesses would have survived that

Were all the clowns who left paid up front or are they left holding out their hands?

Rory's week just got even better.

I don't know. He left nine figures on the table. Not to mention all the hate he got for backing the tour. Now the tour is about to accept all the big names back. I'd be pretty pissed if I was Rory!

The hate was always moronic. People are impossible to please. Keep your mouth shut and you are a p***y who didn't do enough to save the PGAT when you should be the vocal leader. Be vocal and you are some sort of whining bully. At the end of the day, they got the job done and beat back a state giant making an unprecedented strong play that could have very well cratered the Tour.

Absolutely a win for the PGAT. I just never cared for the 'good vs evil' theme that some framed this whole thing as.

I'm curious if Rahm had some insight and therefore wasn't worried about the demands from the R&A to be Ryder Cup eligible.

That doesn't make the fines go away, right? Isn't that the issue?

That's my understanding. He still has to be reinstated by the DPWT and right now, that requires him meeting their demands.

Having said that, one of his hangups was the number of events he was required to play. If LIV goes bust, that may not be much of an issue anymore.

Most of the LIV players bring very little value for the PGA Tour. Sergio should be banned from golf forever. The few top players on LIV will be reinstated on the PGA Tour with significant financial contributions before becoming eligible to play.

Forever? Really?
