And I failed to mention that we do still wear Cav brass in our normal uniform, but is worn in the center of our left breast pocket.
As it has been since at least 1989.

The Campaign cover issue is more fluid. Chin straps were the only option in those days. Some Cav Jocks had a substantial curl to the hat, some (me included) didn't. It was hell keeping much semblance of flatness after snow and/or rain.

I agree completely with what you said about made-up/fake ribbons and medals, that's the kind of nonsense that should be cracked down on. And I failed to mention that we do still wear Cav brass in our normal uniform, but is worn in the center of our left breast pocket. Our Corps Brass still sits on our collar where it has always been, because like you said, we joined the Corps first
Really?!

Yeah, or ones that they went out and bought to wear, but didn't rightfully earn.

I've not heard of it, but if wearing unearned Corps decorations is prevalent, then there's a unit leadership and core values disconnect. As for fake ribbon pull-outs for a grin, well, that has happened forever.

It's not a prevalent issue, but I have definitely heard of a few people thinking that they are cool and pulling stuff like this every now and then.

BQs pull out their infantry/artillery band brass, certain people pull out chrome brass or skeleton brass, or made up ribbons/medals. I mean I get it, you're a millenial, everyone told you you were special growing up, and now you feel the need to be unique in uniform to feel special, but come on, you joined the Corps!
Not a millennial here, infantry/artillery band "brass" was not unheard of in my day. My dad was C Company Infantry '49, so it was very cool to wear my band lyre atop his old crossed rifles a few times. And most people thought it was normal Corps Brass until they looked closely.

BQs often slipped in a few high school band music medals on their Corps uniforms for occasional amusement. The world did not end.

We used to call things like that "pull outs" and thought it funny. I still remember a BQ '76 making a "scho pro ribbon" with a star for every semester he was on scholastic probation. The thing with a pull out, is once you were caught, you were punished and went back to the normal uniform.

As far as skeleton brass, and curved brass that you did not mention, it was standard in my day. Only fish had to wear flat, unshaved brass. Smooth (shaved) and curved brass was worn by all upperclassmen.

Related campaign hat question: The strap, how is it worn day to day by cadets? My guess is that it was worn under he chin, back in the day. When reissued during my time, the strap was worn behind the head, an inch or two below the hat. It was slipped over the bulge in the back of your skull, just tight enough to retain it in normal use.

Still behind the head?

Yep, still behind the head.

Depended on time frame. 1989-1993, standard issue was behind the head. PMC uniform 1989-1993 required under the chin, never, ever behind head. So we had two covers for that era - Corps uniform issue and Cav uniform issue.

I think you've mentioned that story before, but I never tire of hearing it. As a 5th year senior, I rented a duplex on Oney Hervey Road in College Station. Probably the same family.

I don't mind the changes, I just hate the fake stories that accompany them. For instance, pennies on Sully, not a bad new tradition. But the made up crap about "Sully used to tutor cadets and charge them a penny for their thoughts" is annoying.
Add in the Ring Dunk as not a bad BUT NEW tradition.
Total waste of beer. We would have NEVER engaged in such foolishness that usually resulted in the waste of a fine pitcher of beer in the 70's.
I have had kids argue with me and TELL me that Ring Dunk goes back generations !!!

I was also told that by another person's son. My wife and I looked at each other and said we must have missed the memo. My No. 2 son knows better than to say stuff like that to his Ol' Ag parents.

My No.1 son's roommate at UNT dunked his UNT ring at the Chicken. No. 2 son almost tossed the table when he did it. No. 1 son (although he went to UNT to play football, he was raised an Aggie and is all things Aggie) was right there with him. You would have thought the room mate had cursed their mother. I must say, it was an interesting sight.

Class or '87 here. Many of my buddies and I dunked our rings. However, we didn't do it for time, like it is now. Well, at least I didn't. I drank it quickly, but not so quick as to overload my stomach and chuck it back up, like I did when I christened my Cavalry Stetson in Korea. It was not a waste of beer.

Yes, this ring dunking tradition is fine for what it is. But it does not go back all that far. I left summer camp at Ft. Sill, returned to A&M for a week for summer school. When I finally got home, my mother handed me a pasteboard box that had come in the mail, and there was the ring I've worn ever since.

You know, it does seem we had this same discussion some time back. Not sure if it was on this board.

I think it was a spin off of a left or right hand thread. It rabbit trailed into a ring dunk and ring day discussion. It amazed a lot of young uns that we had NO traditions attached to the Ring ( other than the Ring itself) prior to the 80's. No dunk, No day ..nada. Most of em actually thought that the dunk was some " age old old Army" tradition...We simply ordered it at the Ring clerk in the Coke bldg, got a phone call and went to see the clerk to pick it up. Even as simple as it was I still remember that day VIVIDLY and am glad that they turned that special event into a great celebration for friends and family.

I do recall that on the day the shipment of Aggie Rings arrived, the news would spread over campus, and the guys who ordered would make a beeline for the Ring Clerk's office.

Which was in the old bookstore, across the street southeast of Sibisa. Whatever this building is now....(suprised it is still there)

I picked up my ring on December 10, 1986 in the Horse Pavilion, which is south of the library

Probably walking to class as I did.

I guess my point is that I'm surprised that the old Bookstore building is still around. I'm sure things like the Ring Clerk are gypsies on campus that have been all over.

Regarding the old Animal Pavillion, it was still that when I was there. Walked through once to look at the Busweiser Clydesdales that were stabled there during a campus visit. Have seen photos from WWI where they were working on airplanes in there.

Several years after this photo, but still...

And since the original post was about the Cav, a random photo that came up on the Cushing Library Flickr

It amazes me to think what it looks like now around the pavilion. Absolutely astonishing to see to see it as it was in its original, standalone condition.

I've looked through some of these photos on occasion when they're posted on these threads, but this will definitely give me something to do on a slow day since I never had the link nor thought to go looking for it.

As you probably know, the building which you are calling "the bookstore" was called the Exchange Store for decades.

Well, actually, I didn't know. I knew "bookstore" was not the correct term, but I couldn't recall the correct one. And the last time I was in there and it was the :Exchange Store", I was probably 10 or 11. I have a vague memory, but that's all.

I do appreciate the correction. I knew I was wrong, so I just went with the generic 'bookstore'.
