Old valbuena is always awesome. I think you could make a solid argument that Vega sicilia is the best wine in the world…easy top 5

The wines on this thread are starting to make me feel bad about myself and occasional run to Specs.

I think 75 Martha is the best bottle of Napa Cabernet ever produced. I have had this same bottle more than 10 times, I have yet to have a bottle that was not amazing.

Sweet. I hit the big 5 0 this year. Looking for a '76 Lafite in great shape… Mag if possible. Haven't tried too hard yet.

Indulge me please as this is a world for which I am unfamiliar.

Where do you find bottles like this and how much was this 51-year old bottle from Napa?

PS - RESPECT!

Of course google is your friend, so there's lots of places. The thing is, they're not usually shared in places like this because it's very limited availability. I get a bunch of emails per day from two different places. For the stuff I want oftentimes if you don't respond to the email within thirty minutes or so they're gone.

The fun is in the hunting. Good luck!

Benchmark wine is one that I believe can ship to TX

I've had decent luck with their aged bottles. Some have been great, others cooked. They do give credit if you get a bad bottle as long as it's within 6mo of purchase.

Yea getting familiar with a local retailer or 2 can help. In Santa Rosa (CA) for example, there is a store called Bottle Barn that is pretty well known. When you're on their email list you can get offers on everything from $20 for a RRV pinot to super high end allocated stuff and vintage stuff that they may even only have 1 bottle of. For those you have to jump on them quick. I saw an offer for an intriguing vintage Napa merlot the other day, but it was gone within a half hour of them broadcasting a cellar sale that they were doing from some collection they acquired.

I am guessing that there may be some similar specialty retailers in TX with similar practices.

Understand the need to not kiss and tell....I guess. Not in the trenches like you guys.

From the pic it looked like a retail establishment so thought I would ask.

Those are some and there are still others. There are also tiers to the retailers to be able to see what others don't.

It's not a matter of "secrets" it's a matter of competing for a scarce resource. I got an email just today for stuff I would like to have purchased, but didn't see the email for 45 minutes and it was gone. If it's readily available stuff, sure. But when there are places that purchase private cellars and sell them, fewer buyers is a good thing.

I bought from (thru) a poster on this thread for almost five years and not once asked where he was getting the offers he texted me, he's a good friend and if he wanted to share that he would have. After five years I stumbled on to them on my own.

I bought a bunch of the 75 heitz Martha's about 6-8 years ago and have been popping them each year on my birthday. I paid anywhere from $360-625. Prices are way more than that today.

Very tasty Chardonnay from New Zealand. I've had some sharp, mineraly, electric Chardonnays like this one from Oregon and Anderson Valley. It's a fun change up from typical Chardonnay and from other wines in general. They let this one hang a bit at 14.5%, but it is crisp and lean even at that ABV.

I do not think I've had a New Zealand Chardonnay before this one. I have had some Aussie Chards though (and Pinot for that matter) that have been excellent. Fun to have off the beaten path stuff.

For the most part, I finished my wine move. I went from 3 small lockers to one big one. And I'm saving a good chunk every month. All the bottles are now in identical crates. Most are organized by the year in which I'll bring a particular crate to the home wine fridge (currently have wines to consume thru 2028 at home). The Champs and Sauternes are in their own crates and I need to label a few more of those. I'd say I'm 97% done with the labeling/organization. Whew.

Small world! Do you happen to remember what vintage they had listed? I read up on this wine and saw some noticeable vintage to vintage differences between 21 and 22.

Completely understand this feeling. There are some very real wine aficionados on this thread who really know their stuff. I've learned a ton just from participating here.

I know some young people who are getting into wine and starting to learn a bit here and there. I always tell them it's a journey; you start with what you like, learn more along the way, graduate to a better quality as you understand some of the background of winemaking, etc., etc. Plus, your palate grows and matures as you try new wines, especially those of quality. The first time I tasted an older Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red, my eyes were opened!

But there is no wrong position on the path, and everyone is moving at their own pace. And there is the financial aspect; not everyone can afford an $800 Scarecrow, or even find one to buy if they could.

I started later in life and I'll probably never move much beyond what I would consider mid-market wines -- for example, Napa cabs in the $100-$150 range, etc. But that's okay.

Keep learning and enjoy the journey!

One suggestion that has helped me (you maybe already have a place like this and if so, bravo):

Find a nearby wine bar that has a deep, rotating selection of by-the-glass so you can experiment with a lot of wines without breaking the bank. It's even better if the proprietor is good with recommendations.

If you are in Houston ... We go to Sonoma Wine Bar in Katy (there is also one in the Heights) and the manager there has never steered us wrong with a recommendation. He'll let you sample several wines before you decide and he has a pretty good selection of bottles you can buy.

Another good place to sample is 60 Vines in Rice Village. They have a ton of wine on tap from around the world and you can build your own flights.

We've also been to Vine Memorial a few times. Nice atmosphere and a pretty good selection.

I'm sure folks on here can throw out more options.
