I live in the Midwest, we have DQ, but they don't have steak fingers. It's ******* upsetting. I miss them.

I also miss going to Sonic in HS and getting a route 44 vanilla Dr Pepper. It's not the same now.

Cherry vanilla lime Sprite!

A Kay's pizza seated at the Texas table. Then a walk across the street for some frozen screwdrivers at Volcano.

I'd say such great memories, but I don't remember many of those nights. But I wish I could relive them all.

Hear me out

Late 1980's Golden Corral buffet as a kid was greatness. Endless mac & cheese, ice cream bar, etc.

The idea of it now grosses me out though.
we had sirloin stockade with a pretty good salad bar (for a 10 year old) with a big ole block of cheddar with a crappy wire cheese cutter.
At least pre-rona,Taste of Texas still ran with a salad bar and cut-your-own block of cheese.

This makes me want K-bobs. Looks like there are still a few in west Texas and New Mexico. Salad bar was good and the one in Hereford, TX did crab legs on Saturdays. They also gave you a free meal on your birthday. My grandma always liked eating there on her birthday and it was always extra special if her birthday ended up on a Saturday!

Basic answer but my grandma put something in chocolate cookies, cooked them, then would put them in the freezer. We couldn't eat them until they were frozen. She died before any of us could get the recipe from her, and she never wrote it down. It's a drag, I cook a lot and I've tried recreating the recipe and I can't get it just right. I know the placebo effect from "well my grandma made the" is missing. Oh well

The special taste of my Grandma's cookies (chocolate chip, Icebox, Ranger cookes, Peanutbutter cookies) was probably do to the cigarettes she chain smoked whilst baking them! Great memories...

K-Bob's was a regular for post-game football team meals after away games. A lot of CFS was consumed.

It was also a nice treat when we passed through Abilene or San Angelo and went to Zentner's Daughter.

Yes, I'm jealous.

Recent BYOW experience. After evening duck hunt near Eagle Lake, we went to a local home cooking joint that had BYOB/W. We brought a couple of bottles in and asked the waitress for some glasses and if she could open them. The restaurant did not have any opener. Luckily I had a corkscrew on my multi-tool attached to my shell bag in the truck. So we got the wine opened and here comes the waitress with 6 coffee mugs. We ask if she has any wine glasses (no). We thought about asking for juice glasses, but just let it go. Then the waitress sets out the coffee mugs and they are all filled to the top with ice. We asked why and she said "I thought y'all were drinking red wine?"

Lots of fail all around.

We have a case with four stems and an opener. For places that don't have good wine we just use our own. They tend to appreciate it.

+1 for Mazzio's.

Aside from that, I miss the hell out of Taco USA. They tried a revival a few years back with a location in The Woodlands, but I think it went under again.

A 1990's Freebirds
Ate at the Freebird's on University this past weekend for the first time in a few years. It was bland, expensive, and the servers were condescending & rude. When they asked what my "protein" was going to be I was WTH - do you mean what meat I wanted? I chose steak and every single bite was gristle and fat. Asked my family how theirs was and got two glances off to the side and an "it's... OK" from the one son that chose chicken.

Everything was an upcharge. The four of us dropped nearly $60 for food I wouldn't have eaten again if it was free. One more positive memory lost from Aggieland. Freebirds used to be a highlight.

What the hell happened?

I go to the one off Mason in Katy on occasion and it's been getting worse every time.

Joked with one employee that I remember when the tax was included in the price on the board and a monster and drink was $7. He couldn't believe they made money when they were that cheap. I wisely didnt mention that they could do that because the line was always out the door during meal times.

I won't even go to freebirds anymore, it got so progressively bad the past decade. Bland, boring trash. I remember ordering the super monster or whatever it was called and having 2 meals during college. It's blown out of the water now by chipotle, and uberrito (I think that's what it's called)

There's this Austin based joint on fountainview and San Fel called Cabo Bobs.. which is excellent.

Oh man, you brought me back with Mazzio's. I grew up in Duncanville and used to go there all the time. I can still remember the garlic bread.

I'd add another DFW area Italian joint -- Spaghetti Warehouse (downtown Dallas location, RIP). I used to go there all the time after church on Sundays. It was such a quirky place. Always had to sit in the trolley car and get one of their many swirl candy sticks on the way out.

My momma made what she called potatoes with "thickening". Essentially it was a milk based thinner gravy type sauce. My poor wife has been chasing that recipe and was trained several times before momma passed away.

Christmas Eve mom would always make "pizza bread". Rolled out dough with pizza filling balled up and baked. Not sure what all she do but that was always a favorite treat.

My granny's chicken and dressing. We almost have that recipe hacked but something is still missing. Before granny passed she gave us the "recipe" but it was not right. We've since added some garlic and a few other thing and have gotten "close"

We have a family cookbook with many of the family favorites from all of the grandmothers, aunts, uncles and such. One of these days when I feel like I can handle it, I'm going to copy mommas family cookbook with all of her handwritten notes and alterations to recipes.

Do you remember a Dallas area Italian restaurant that had bocce ball outside, and they would bring out a plate with seasoning on it for you to add olive oil to make a dip for the bread?

Godfather's Pizza was epic.

Circa 1990 Wild -n- Wooly Wednesday at Double Daves, when the Peproni Rolz had more than 4 pepperonis in them and it was all the beer you could drink and all the buffet you could eat for like $9.00.

La Taqueria
Oh man, WWW was a must for me a few times a month. I wanna say 90' was the year they changed it from all you could drink to like 2 or 3 chuggers, after Sept. 1st. Maybe it was 91', had to do with TABC laws getting enacted that killed a lot of the drink specials and such, and limited happy hours. That was a major pisser. Would hardly eat anything on Weds before Wild and Wooly, Many Thursday hangover were rough on me and some friends.

TequilaMockingbird: SHAKEY'S PIZZA THE BEST, EVER! Lived 40 years in Midland, TX and after EVERY event the kids played in we went to Shakey's for Pizza and Mojo's. Will NEVER forget that taste, cannot to this day find anything like it, man, I do miss that. Dunno why they went away, guess time and tide wait for no pizza joint.

I just had one this weekend:

The McQueeney Special from the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge. You could also find a version of this at Mama's in San Antonio, but the Ski Lodge invented it.

It's a jumped up Frito Pie on a salad.

Also, chased it down with an ice cold glass of nostalgia: a Big Red float.

Both hit that nostalgic spot just right.

The prison stew and cornbread. I'd gladly serve another 22 years for just one more serving. I don't think there was actual meat or vegetables in that stew by the way.
