Is this the new reality of Aggie basketball? Having to essentially rebuild the roster every season with very little consistency seems like we're going to be in this same predicament every season for the foreseeable future.

It's the new reality period. Not just aggie basketball. More than half of all cbb players are in the portal. Are some of you just waking up after a 6 year nap?

we have two great freshman coming in. Recruiting well. We had to build a roster from scratch this season so it'll take a minute. We aren't going to do the Buzz method where we keep an give heavy minutes to guys who shouldn't be on high major rosters just because they're good guys who read to kids.

I think caps on number of transfers are coming. This is too much for coaches and staffs to handle.

I don't really care if players get paid, but some kind of contract or limit on transfers needs to happen.

I don't really care if players get paid, but some kind of contract or limit on transfers needs to happen.
Maybe the coaches need their salaries and length of service regulated first. They make the real money.

And here is the weird thing, we are keeping Vison and McDermott. I understand if players want to leave, but the irony of it all, is that every coach is trying to gain consistency. And at the risk of sounding condescending, we seem to be doing so with players that were not high contributors in any category.
I am hoping that the wallet is still large enough to bring another rim protector that can score like Agee, and a few more athletic guards that can create drives or score from distance. We'll need it bad.

You started this back on 4/9, what do you think now?

BTW, this final post of yours was on 4/14. So, as it turns out, we end up keeping not only Vinson and McDermott, but also Clemence, Mgbako and Green. We also get Mundey back who enrolled early and got to participate in practices and get a taste of Bucky's system so really considered 6 returners familiar with Bucky's system vs last year when the only one we had familiar with Bucky Ball was Holloway.

I would say that has turned out pretty damn good, right?

There is no way to sugar coat this, but an Agee doesn't come along everyday. They are sort of a unicorn and hard to impossible to find, especially to find 1 in any given class HS or portal. We won't have an Agee next year, but we will have a rotation of depth in the front court and all of them are taller and longer than Agee, so somewhat of a trade off and I am confident Bucky and his staff will take advantage of having what we didn't have last year.

Now looking at what we lost and looking at the back court we got through the portal, it's night and day improvement. It's no longer 4/9 and you have to feel good about what Bucky has put together as a roster. It looks really damn impressive!!!!!!

I am really interested to see how Vinson develops considering how he flashed 4 or 5 times last season.

Luke kept saying that the staff really thinks he can eat up a lot more minutes this year.

What's weird about Vinson is that, a bit like Clemence, he's actually pretty good at some of the really hard stuff. It's the basics he sucks at.

His rebounding fundamentals are almost incomprehensibly bad. I wondered all season what happens in practice if Vinson and Federiko try to go up against each other for a rebound. Do they just like phase through each other like ghosts?

Yes he is expected back.

This is what blows my mind with a lot of modern players. If you are a 5 man, and somehow you just have absolutely no rebounding instincts, at the very least just box out whoever the nearest person is from the other team. At least you take them out of the play.

It's just inexcusable to not chase rebounds or box a man out every time down the floor. It's just a total lack of court awareness.

I have seen middle school girls play with more physicality/instincts boxing out than a couple of our big men last season. It really is crazy.

Center. The only thing I would still add to this roster now is an elite Center. Great job recruiting out of the portal by Bucky and staff though. I imagine our roster is basically full now. Not sure how some of our returners will find playing time already.

Luke has already said, it's not going to happen. The elite Centers are asking too much and they already have plenty that can be effective at the 5. He listed of course Vinson, but as well said we can expect to see Clemence, Campbell and Irving all at the 5. BTW, he also made it clear that Clemence and Campbell will also play a role at the 4 as well and in addition to Mgbako who will play primary at the 4. It also seems it won't be a rarity to see Clemence or Mgbako slide out to the 3 at times (probably very limited reps at the 3 for each of them but could see if from time to time).

We only have 1 spot left and Luke seems to believe they could find a European C out there but it sounds like they maybe looking more for a sharp shooter tall and long wing to fill out that last spot.

I could only find top 10 transfer portal rankings online. Nothing beyond that. Did anyone else locate a resource that ranks how A&M did in the portal compared to other SEC programs?

Yeah, the idea of landing a gamechanging C is nice but the reality is it likely won't happen for a multitude of reasons.

I think at this point, any center we got would have holes in his game or weaknesses that would put him on equal footing to what we already have. We could of course get lucky and find a diamond in the rough.

I think the more effective piece for this roster at this point is that swing guy in the 6'5 to 6'8 range that can play 2/3/4 and give us tough defense, rebounding from the perimeter, etc. A dawg type that we bring in for energy, hustle, and attitude.

Let me put it this way. I have no doubt in Buckys ability to recruit. He did a phenomenal job last year and he seems to be doing it again.
The point that I was trying to make is that he is rebuilding again. And yes, I know that last year there was only one player on the team when he arrived. I know there are a few still left this time. The issue is that those that remain, played very little (either due to injuries or simply being backups). Therefore, there's very little carryover consistency.
I can't help but to think that we are repeating last year's adventure (maybe to a lesser degree or on a smaller scale), but the challenge will still be there. The majority of the starters will be faced with learning a new system, and the staff will still need time to figure out how to make the pieces fit.
There's obviously no way of knowing which path is the right path, but I'd like to get your take. Do you think teams with more consistent rosters have a higher probability of success, or is it the new way (portal overhauls) that triumphs?

I also think people undervalue how much continuity even from non-rotation players can help a team. Just having guys in the locker room that know the language and terminology we're using, know what the coaches want, etc. can be huge.

Over time I believe some combination of yr over yr continuity and using the portal to upgrade the roster is the right answer for being competitive every year. Some coaches/staffs are better at turning a team of new guys into a competitive unit quickly than others. What you can't do is lose key cogs to the portal/transfers over and over . I don't think that happened this year altho an argument can be made that Hill (assuming he get's another yr) or Isaacs may have been a positive for next yrs team . I understand both probably wanted more PT/exposure than they would have likely gotten here next season given the incoming players. What they wanted or could get money wise also was probably a factor.

To me carrying over 5-8 players yr over yr is probably the sweet spot. More if you have a really good team with that many potential carryovers but I'd think that is going to be unusual in this free transfer environment.

I'd normally dismiss this as hyperbole, but I can't disagree. My daughter's junior high JV team made it their badge of honor to out physical the other team on the glass to get every rebound. They had 3 really athletic front court players with a little size and It completely put the other teams on tilt. You would think that would go well with Bucky's style.

Must've spent too much time on shooting in practice and not enough time rebounding. All my internet coaches, am i right?
