Brownsville, Texas
The Plantation without any black slaves

Old Brulay Plantation was established circa 1870, by George Paul Brulay (18391905). George Paul Brulay had immigrated from France to Matamoros, Mexico and then to Brownsville, Texas. He bought up 400 acres of land located near the Rio Grande, most of which at the time was full of brush plants.
It was initially experimented with different crops on the land; first it was a cotton plantation, followed by a sugar plantation. Brulay had built a sugar mill on the property circa 1876. Because this plantation was established after the American Civil War of 18611865, the plantation did not own black slaves.

When tariffs on Cuban sugar were removed c. 1910, the plantation closed down.

Brulay's sons worked the farm until it was sold in 1924. It was acquired by immigrants from Japan prior to World War I. The plantation was purchased by the Nye family in 1931. By 2016, it still belonged to the same family.

The Pershing House at Fort Bliss

The Pershing House was built in 1910, and it originally cost $16,378 (equivalent to $535,561 in 2023). It was built according to "plan number 243" from the Quartermaster General's Office, marking some of the earliest usage of standardized building plans at Fort Bliss. This plan gave it an area of 5,874 square feet (545.7 m2).
The house was named after General John J. Pershing, who occupied it from January 1914 to 1916 as the post commander of Fort Bliss during the Mexican Revolution.
In October 1911, the first 48-star flag of the United States was raised in front of the Pershing House to celebrate the pending statehood of New Mexico and Arizona.
In November 1911, electrical power was installed. In July 1928, gas was first used in the house.
Today, the Pershing House contains artifacts, furniture, and documents from the early 20th century when the building was first built and occupied.

Herff House in Boerne, Texas.

Herff/Rozelle Farm
The Herff Farm is an excellent example of a Texas Hill Country farmstead built by pioneer German families who settled in and near Boerne in the mid-to-late 1800s. Located on the eastern outskirts of Boerne in Kendall County, the farm is part of a larger tract purchased by pioneer physician Ferdinand Herff in 1852. Herff's holdings eventually expanded to some 10,000 acres which were used for ranching and as a retreat for his large family. After an earlier house burned, Ferdinand and Mathilde Herff built a two-story limestone house on the site. The property remained in the family until 1935.

Perhaps you are right. Last night, I dreamed I showed up to Olsen for Opening Day and there was no second deck. I was very upset. "Where are the seats for baseball?" I kept asking. "Where are the seats for baseball??" Also I made Trev Alberts mad by singing the War Hymn too loud.

I think baseball really needs to come back soon. I don't typically have these dreams in season.

I was born in nearby Brownwood (41 miles from Brady) so I tell people I was born deep in the heart of Texas, too…

The Pollock-Capps House, a Victorian mansion built in 1898 for Dr. Joseph R. Pollock in Fort Worth, Texas
The mansion was sold to William Capps and wife Sallie, whose family lived here 1909 to 1971. On the grounds were a golf course, tennis court, and a three-car garage with a ballroom above. This was in a neighborhood lined with Victorian homes of so many bankers, businessmen, cattlemen, lawyers, physicians, and publishers that it was nicknamed "Quality Hill."

Port Arthur

The Pompeiian Villa was designed by Chicago architects George C. Nimmons and William K. Fellows. It was intended to be reminiscent of the villas in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD.
It was built in 1900 for Isaac Elwood at a cost of over $50,000 (about

1.4 million today). Elwood, of DeKalb, Illinois, was a highly successful
entrepreneur who patented and sold his own variant of barbed wire. Barbed wire in 1900 was big business, as open ranges throughout the United States were rapidly being fenced in.

James Hopkins of the Diamond Match Company bought the home in 1901 and leased it to various parties until 1903. A popular story claims that his wife was so displeased by the mosquitoes, mud, humidity, and general inhospitable conditions of early Port Arthur that she demanded to be returned to the train station without ever setting foot in the Villa.
Hopkins traded the house in 1903 to one of the people who had been renting it, the manager of the Port Arthur Townsite Company George M. Craig for 10% share of the Texas Company which became Texaco. The amount of stock Hopkins received would be worth about 5 billion dollars today.
