Walker Mansion
Gladewater,Texas

Edgar Lathgro Walker of Tennessee wed Nannie E. Lewis, a native of Kentucky, in 1891. The couple later brought their two young daughters, Lena and Alma, to Gladewater to visit E.L.'s brother, William, and they decided to stay. Their third daughter, Bessie, was born in Gladewater in 1898. E.L., a graduate of the Cincinnati School of Medicine, opened a medical practice and drugstore. He purchased this site from W.S. and Sara Austin on October 23, 1895, and he and Nannie completed their new home sometime before 1910. Their property eventually extended all the way to the Sabine River and included several barns, a cookhouse, oil wells and derricks, and oil storage tanks.
Following the deaths of her parents, Bessie (Walker) and husband Otto Staerker lived in the house, which stayed in the family until 1969. Subsequent owners have ensured the house remains a landmark, a link to the Walker family and early Gladewater.
There's no telling. Gladewater was founded as a railroad stop in 1873. After wildcatters struck oil nearby in 1931, the town's population swelled from 500 residents to about 8,000. Housing was so hard to come by, the Walkers' heirs leased mansion rooms to families of oil workers and rented cots on the second floor for 25 cents a day. "You had all these people moving into what basically became a boarding house," said Memori, who estimates as many as 40 to 50 people could have been living there on any given night at the height of the boom.

Rucker-Campbell House
The Rucker-Campbell House was constructed in 1872 by Asa Rucker who was the owner of a large saw mill. The Rucker family was the original builders and owners of the house. The house was originally built in a Beaux Arts style and was converted to a Queen Anne Victorian in 1903.
The most prominent owner of the house was Judge J.N. Campbell. In 1898, Judge J.N. Campbell began his law practice in Longview. He served as County and District Clerk as well as County Judge of Gregg County. He also built Lake Devernia which is located west of Longview and was named after his daughter. Judge Campbell's brother was Governor Thomas M. Campbell who was the second native-born governor of Texas.

Currently, Preservation Longview is the owner of the house which is unoccupied at this time. They are in the middle of restoring the house so that it may be used as a community venue and museum.

Teague House

One of the few remaining houses of Earpville (early Longview), the Teague House was considered to be "an old house" in 1882 when it was purchased by Mary and Lattimus Teague of Alabama. Built before Gregg County was formed from parts of Upshur and Rusk Counties in 1873, the records of the deed were lost when a court house fire destroyed Upshur County records.
The Teague family had 10 children, but only one grand-child, who died in early childhood. The Teagues' daughters, Molly and Sarah, held school sessions and taught music lessons in the home after 1890. There are no Teague family descendants.

Teague Pond, now part of Teague Park, was always part of this site. In 1935, Lattimus W. Teague sold 20 acres to the City of Longview as a memorial to his sister Sarah.

Campbell "Honeymoon Home Longview, TX

On Second Street in Longview sits a historic home that once was the home of a Texas governor. This small frame cottage served as the first home for Thomas Campbell and Fannie Bruner.

Campbell was a native of Rusk and worked in the Gregg County clerk's office in Longview before becoming a lawyer in 1878. That was the same year he married Bruner.
This home was known as the Honeymoon Home. The Campbells raised their five children there.

Campbell ran for governor and won two terms. He was just the second native Texan to become governor. He was known for his regulation of utilities, lobbying restrictions, a pure food law, an insurance law and prison reform.
The Campbell Home received its historical designation in 1965. It was moved from across the street in 1982.

The Campbell Honeymoon Home is located at 500 North Second Street in Longview.

The Northcutt

In a neighborhood that once displayed many fine Victorian homes, the Northcutt house at 313 South Fredonia stands as one of the few remaining examples of Victorian architecture in Longview. Designed by Rev. W.B. Allen in 1902 for Dr. W.D. Northcutt, the double gallery, wood frame structure was constructed of heart pine lumber which was milled at nearby Tyler.
The spacious, two-story, wood frame structure housed Dr. Northcutt and his family for almost 30 years until he died. Representing more than just a family dwelling, Northcutt's house symbolized his prominence in Longview. His numerous contributions through political office, his dedication to helping through medicine and his amiable character made Dr. Northcutt a well- known and well-liked person throughout the community.
William Davis Northcutt was born on November 12, 1861 in Ackworth, Georgia. When he was eight years old he moved with his parents to Longview, Texas. He attended McClellands Boarding School and entered Texas A&M In 1878. Upon receiving an M.D. degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky several years later, Northcutt returned to Longview to begin his medical career which spanned 45 years of active practice.
Perhaps Northcutt's most significant contributions involved public office. Serving as mayor for four terms, he was elected as a member of the school board, city alderman, county and city health officer and also served as chief of the volunteer fire department. In addition, Northcutt was a member of numerous medical associations and various social clubs and lodges.

When Dr. Northcutt died in 1931 the entire community of Longview mourned his death. Because of the family's strong ties with the town, most of his children remained in Longview and his youngest daughter, Jessie, continue living in the house for eleven more years. In 1938 she married a local lawyer, Edward A. Brown. Deciding on a military career in 1942, Brown and his wife left Longview for the next sixteen years. During this period, the house stood empty, but was maintained by other family members who regularly visited the house to ensure its upkeep.

After retiring from the military in 1958, Brown and his family returned to Longview. When Jessie died in 1976 the house was given to her son, Arthur Brown, who will owns the structure.

One of the few remaining examples of Victorian architecture in Longview, the Northcutt house stands as one of the city's most significant and impressive residences. The house was constructed almost entirely of East Texas Curly Pine, which is now extinct. No additions or major alterations have occurred since the building was completed in 1902.

Just a clever device by the designer of this sign to show the possible consequences of hasty improperly thought out action.

This would be my story and I would stick to it.
