Nope, and for as in the middle of nowhere that Gail is, it's actually a pretty drive for west Texas to get to it.

We would have to leave extra early to go there when we played them in basketball or had a track meet there, because half the team would get carsick on the drive because of the hills and constant curves in the road (FM 669)

I don't know who this guy is. Probably some Aggie great from decades ago. I think he was a contact hitter.

If you're driving US 180 between Snyder and Lamesa and need a public restroom during business hours, it would look like an oasis.

McElroy-Severn House
(Onion Creek Post Office and Stagecoach House)
Buda, Texas

The complex that includes the McElroy-Severn House/Stagecoach House and Onion Creek Post Office occupies a 51-acre tract of land on a high bluff above a branch leading into Onion Creek, about a quarter mile east of Buda. The post office and stagecoach served the area's residents and people traveling on the Old San Antonio Road beginning in 1875. Once mail service moved to the new railroad town of DuPre (Buda) in 1880, the former station house was converted to a private residence and served as headquarters for a family ranching operations for more than a century.

Zack and I find the building itself aesthetically pleasing. Pulchritudinous, even. But those staircases?

My guess is that there are more deer killed on Highway 16 than any other road in the state. I've dodged a couple myself.

That would make sense. They certainly don't comport with the style of the building. And they are oddly placed in front of the ground floor windows.

I think that's a different building from the one they light up. Looks like the new, current courthouse was built in 1916, and this old one was built in 1885. Both are pictured in this post.

ETA: the old courthouse is also in Blanco, not in Johnson City

They are almost certainly fire escapes added fairly recently. That courthouse is probably old enough that it was built with only one open (no fire doors) staircase in the center of the building. Modern fire code would require additional egress paths.

It was built in 1885 so yeah that's a definite maybe. But the main point is that's not actually the building in Johnson City everyone is thinking about that get's lit up by Pedernales every Christmas.

Blanco Courthouse in Johnson City

PEC HQ in Johnson City

The building originally posted by Dabo is in Blanco, which at one time was in fact the county seat and it was once the courthouse. The "new" courthouse in Johnson City was built in 1916 but looks quite a bit different.

So Dabo gets partial credit -- that was the Blanco County Courthouse at one point, and the current courthouse is in fact in Johnson City -- both of those were correct. But the posted building is in Blanco so minus 1 point there for Dabo.

Fun fact: several scenes from the 2010 remake of True Grit were shot at the courthouse in Blanco. There's a bunch more cool info on the Old Blanco Courthouse website here https://www.historicblanco.org/
