John F. McGehee Home
San Marcos, Texas

Built in 1889 by John Francis McGehee (1838-1922), a veteran of Hood's Brigade in Civil War. The house, constructed of pine hauled from Bastrop, cypress siding, and handmade brick, is of 19th century Eastlake architectural style. Since McGehee sold the property in 1906, it has had several owners. Dr. J. R. Morton, whose wife, Frances M. Morton, was San Marcos' poet laureate, lived here 1920-51. The George N. Martindales have owned the house since 1955.

George Thomas McGehee House
San Marcos, Texas

Among the first settlers in the San Marcos area, George Thomas McGehee (1836-1926) moved here with his parents, Minerva (Hunt) and Thomas Gilmer McGehee, in 1846. He fought in the Civil War with Terry's Texas Rangers and served 3 terms in the State Legislature, 1887-91 and 1893-94. In 1895 he and his wife, Sarah Cherokee Woods McGehee (1849-1928), built this turreted Victorian residence. In 1949 it was bought and restored by Homer M. (1897-1972) and Vola Thompson.

3. Aggies Open CWS with Dramatic Win over Florida
Date: June 15, 2024

The Aggies made it to the Heartland for the second time in three seasons. But after losing Braden Montgomery and Shane Sdao the previous weekend, the odds of a deep run were stacked against them. A red hot Florida Gator squad that took 2/3 from the Aggies in March was the first test, and a lengthy rain delay that pushed the start time back to 10:16 pm only added to the drama. Justin Lamkin got the surprise start on the mound for the Aggies, and he delivered amazing results his one time through the order by striking out six and allowing just one hit over three innings. That start allowed the Aggies to manufacture a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the second on an infield single and wild pitch, and another in the third on a Caden Sorrell double. Two Gator runs charged to Chris Cortez in the seventh set up a dramatic finish.


Clinging to a 3-2 lead, Evan Aschenbeck struck out Brady Donay to start the top of the ninth. The next batter, Michael Robertson, reached on an infield single to turn the lineup over to Cade Kurland. Kurland crushed a ball to right field and looked to have a go ahead two-run home run, but Jace LaViolette made the play of the year to rob him. Aschenbeck eventually got Ashton Wilson to strike out to end the game.

The Aggies would, of course, go on to win the next three games against Kentucky (5-1), Florida (6-0), and Tennessee (9-5) before falling just short of a national championship.

2. Aggies Outlast Longhorns to Advance to the Regional Final
Date: June 1, 2024

After beating Grambling to open the Bryan/College Station Regional, the Aggies faced an all-too-familiar foe as the designated visitors in the winners' bracket. Strange things often happen in rivalry games, and this one was no exception.

Longhorns' first baseman Jared Thomas jumped on Ryan Prager's first pitch for a solo shot, and that 1-0 score held until the fifth inning when Caden Sorrell tied the game with a home run of his own. Prager worked out of trouble to keep the game within reach, including tossing an immaculate inning in the fourth. Former Aggie Kimble Schuessler broke the tie in the sixth with a two-out solo shot, and with the Aggie bats seemingly on life support, Olsen Magic would be needed to spark a rally.

That magic came in the eighth when Longhorn shortstop Jalin Flores made two errors, the second of which allowed Braden Montgomery to score with two outs to tie the game. The game moved to the 11th inning, and Olsen Magic struck again.

Ted Burton stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and hit a weak ground ball to third that hit the bag, causing Longhorn third baseman Peyton Powell to misplay it and allowing Kaeden Kent to score. Jace LaViolette scored on a wild pitch to expand the lead to 4-2, and Evan Aschenbeck capped off his 4.2 innings of no-hit relief with a 1-2-3 inning to send the Aggies to the Regional Final. The next evening, A&M would punch their ticket to the Super Regional by beating Louisiana, 9-4.
