Surely we can do better than snagging DBU's coach...

Ten Heefner threads on page 1 right now.

We just won four games in Omaha, are number two in every poll + RPI, have a beautiful park, an $80 million renovation on the way, and play in the best conference in the country. Why are we hitting up a small school and hoping that someone who has done more with less can win in the SEC.

We should be hiring someone who is already winning in the SEC or ACC.

I feel like you should know better. Heefner is a top tier coach who already recruits extremely well.

Is he a "flashy" hire? No. But he's a damn good coach, and baseball players in hs and college know who he is.

Is he my first pick? No, but he's top 3 and I'm not sure I could realistically put them in any order and feel confident about one over another.

He is unproven in big time baseball. We are a program with elite resources. He is not an elite hire. He's a Rob Childress type hire. RC made it to Omaha twice and never won a game there.

such an astute baseball mind. I bet you helped coach 1st base on your kids' little league team that day when the other parents were absent.

Normally I would agree with you, and I do want O'Connor, but Heefner is a really good coach and maybe he is the answer, especially in nil times. Seems like he is a better coach as far as player development than anyone in the country.

RC was never a head coach before here.

DH has turned down tu, tcu, baylor and other major programs. Top 10 oin wins over the last decade I somewhat discount due to the level of competition. Top 10 in players drafted over the last 10 years. At DBU. That's really loud.

He's not my first choice but I think he'd be an amazing fit and great hire

Some of you forget that we still have glaring leadership issues we are dealing with. The last 8 months have been an absolute circus. It's very likely that coaches at other major programs do not want to come here and be a part of what has recently been a very publicly unstable athletic department.

He coaches at a school of 4,000 with 1/10 the resources of any major college program, and yet has posted a 24-28 record in the NCAAs, with two super regionals, and victories over TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Virigina, Florida, Oregon St., Oklahoma St., Arizona, Washington and a host of others....

perhaps one day he will have a chance to prove himself in "big time" baseball.

Unproven? This year alone, his team beat OU- twice (and people wanted Skip Johnson..), Okie Lite- twice, Arizona (twice), Alabama, Baylor, and San Diego (as well as some other decent mid-majors).

He does this year in and year out. His teams have historically given us absolute hell. He schedules big teams every year, and every year he beats them with a fraction of the resources.

He does more with less than just about any other coach out there. Give him the resources of a place like A&M and see what happens.

Exactly, and church school rules won't work at Texas A&M.

This Heefner talk reminds me of the many who wanted Chad Morris for football HC.

Heefner looks like he could be a good middle of the road SEC coach. High water mark is a super regional every 3 or 4 years or so.

DBU does so much with so little. They are similar to App State in football. I would love to take their coach, honestly!

I wonder if Texas Tech thought the same things before hiring an assistant coach at Oklahoma who dominated the Aggies with a record of like 10-3. Every coach starts somewhere and A&M will may not ever win a championship until they take risks, and develop skills of picking talented coaches who will succeed at A&M. Your argument fails with Jimbo every time. What a disaster.

National, elite recruits will not come to A&M to play for Coach H.

Great coach at DBU, but A&M won't win CWS championships with Heefner.

I still want to know what happened with Schloss. Leaving is one thing. Trying to burn down the whole program when you go is another. This was malicious and personal. Something happened. Or maybe he's just a sociopath. Time will tell.

There was a football coach from Utah that A&M should have taken a chance on but we ended up with Fran. If only I could remember his name.

Everyone who is saying positive things about Heefner is being asked how they know (what jobs he's been offered or how well he would do here) or to prove things. Well - how do you know "national, elite recruits" will not come to play for him? Prove that A&M won't win championships with him.

I understand his methods would be different and there would be a learning curve to running a program like ours from a resources, recruiting, NIL standpoint; but what makes some so absolutely sure that he would fail? Why couldn't his similar approach work with more money and facilities and fan support behind it??

Is he using the Rice method to accomplish that though?

Looch doesn't sound excited about DBU. He wouldn't be "one of his closest friends" like the predecessor was described.

DBU isn't Childress. He has been a head coach for a long time - Childress was not. He has turned down other jobs many times. I think he will prove to be a home run hire.

This hire would be us throwing in the towel. He's been good at DBU, but there's probably a reason that he's been there a long time. It's us conceding and our Athletic Director taking the "easy" road once again. SEC is a long way from DBU baseball…… he better go grab the Virginia coach……. But then again… this is who we are.

He's been there a long time because he has wanted to be. He turns down offers pretty much every year. Hell- he turned down tu, and then they went with pierce. No one thought he would leave DBU, but schools constantly try to get him to.

I'm sure that he's a good coach, but he won't retain players in the portal or bring SEC ready players with him. Virginia/Florida State guys will. Hiring him is starting over, simple as that. It's a good budget move, but not a " what's best for Aggie baseball right now" move. Kids won't come for him., not in this portal environment. They want a name

I would have been thrilled if the Ags hired Heefner back in '21 so while not my top choice this go around I will not be disappointed if he gets the nod this time around.

I like Heefner, I think he's a good coach, I don't think his methods will work out at A&M where he's not the one in charge of everything. (Baseball is DBU's only D1 sport and their AD basically reports to him.)

However, I also don't think we are likely to take a "big name" away from anywhere else. These guys have been at their schools for ages and have had a lot of success there. Why would they leave? I read that O'Connor has been at Virginia 20+ years. Why would he leave that?

I guess there's always the chance that someone just wants to try something new, but that's going to be hard to find. I think people are going to have to temper their expectations.

I expect these reactions from people who pay attention to baseball only in June if the ags are in it...but I'm disappointed in the seasonal regulars underestimating Heefner and his skillset..or thinking that being the only team who could drag him away after so many others have failed wouldn't be a "splash" It's really surprising and disappointing tbh.

Settling for a Midmajor coach who's unproven at this level is a big risk, and pretty weak if he's only got 0 Omaha appearances. Plenty of smaller schools have made Omaha several times. But I trust someone knows baseball better than me, and that we've been rejected by all the half-dozen or so Power-5 coaches who better qualify and are can't miss hires.

I run a very successful small business. A few million bucks in revenue, so nice but nothing crazy. I might be able to step in as the CEO of Microsoft tomorrow. ...but I might not. It's the same, but different. The scale of everything is different, the demands are different, the people are different. It's not a zero sum, "it worked there so it's transportable here" issue. That's my concern with Heefner. Not that he's not a good coach or a good person, but that he's never done anything at the size and scale he may soon be asked to do it at. At this level managing personalities and time is likely more important than baseball development. That's what your staff is here for. How does he manage NIL? How does he manage the donors that are, let's face it, just ****ing insufferable that make the NIL possible? He's never had to carve time out of his schedule for they level of nonsense that he'll face here.

Will it work? Maybe. Perhaps even 'probably.' but it's not a certainty.

As for an O'Connor-type, you saw the last 2 weeks exactly why he might move. ACC record vs SEC in the CWS... 0-5. He went to back to back finals in '14-15. Since then the SEC has had 6 different teams win the title. The money disparity is growing larger. The ACC TV revenue is getting smaller (comparatively) by the year and they're locked in an awful deal for another 12 years at which time the conference probably dies. I'm not saying he's looking to jump ship, he can be picky. But A&M is arguably a Top 5 job between geography, fan support and finances. That's why he might leave.
