It seems to me that Coach views the lineup as more circular than linear. He made a comment in a presser a week or two ago that the leadoff batter is only the leadoff once per game.

Interesting

Someone said similar on the game thread, page 2 last week. Oh yeah, me.

While true, it also means the leadoff batter will get the most at bats of the game. If that guy is on a 1-25 or whatever Jace is, that doesn't bode well. Once he gets hit again, he could definitely lead off… but he's in a major slump so it's just an odd choice

I was just saying why he was doing it. Not that I agreed with it.

Big picture though, We do need Jace to get better if we are going to get back to Omaha no matter where he bats in the lineup.

I'd like this

Kiel
Sorrell
Hensler
Jace
Royo
Kent
Bear
Kash
Schott
I don't want Schott batting just before Kiel. Why clog the bases for a guy whose speed on the basepath is one of his biggest strengths?

I know the thread is about Royo, but it has to be about Jace, since he got moved to leadoff. I figured Jace got moved in order to give him different looks to help him out of the slump. However, that struck me funny. In my 2+ decades career as a softball and baseball coach at the HS level, I've never seen a kid moved up in the lineup to help with slump busting. I've moved a kid down. Sat him/her. Bunted him/her, even pinch-hit then hit & run with the kid at the plate to help with decision making. But I've never moved a kid up, especially to the leadoff spot. I'm very interested to see how it goes, after that infield single to finish his game on Sunday.

I think it's a combination of several things:

-Coach likes to alternate L/R in batting order to the extent that he can
-Coach wanted to move Sorrell into the top 3 to maximize his ABs
-Based on those 2 things, assuming you still want Jace in the top 3 as well, one of the LHH has to be leadoff.

Brauny wrote about Jace being leadoff even before the season started so I think this is the construction Coach has wanted all along. He's just now able to do with Sorrell finally back in action.
