Don't think that Jace has taken well to the 1 spot.

Ideally, TK3 would lead off, but despite making some good contact this weekend and having an RBI single yesterday, Earley looked livid with him after his 8th inning AB w Kash at 3rd w 1 out, not even offering at three called strikes.

So how about Royo at 1?

1 Royo 2B
2 Jace CF
3 Hens 3B
4 Sorrell RF
5 Bear C
6 Kent SS
7 Schott DH vs RHP, Bindy DH vs LHP
8 Kash 1B
9 TK LF
I actually still prefer Schott as DH even vs. lefties. Binderup besides one weekend has basicaly been non existent. Save him for a PH when we need a miracle HR as Schott seems to be less of a power threat. But Schott's approach can do well vs. lefties. He stays on the ball and almost everything is up the middle or the other way. He can stay on a lefties slider.
Agree. Schott is a better clutch hitter and more likely to put the ball in play. I haven't checked his BA against lefties but he does not seem to have huge weaknesses when facing a LHP.

In the sticky interview today, Coach says Kash and Bindy are going to based on matchup. I'm not really sure how you pick between those 2 and Schott right now for 1 fielding position and DH tbh. My gut says Kash is the everyday 1B just because the defense is that much better, even with Bindy's improvement. Then you have Schott / Bindy at DH based on matchup and the other is one of the first PH options off the bench.

Yes, we are in agreement.

Out pitching is top notch.
We need to do all we can to make our defense the same.

The funny part is that Earley moved Jace up to see if that would help him. I'm not sure I have ever seen that one. I have only seen guys move down bc it supposedly puts less pressure on them. Moving him to one probably put more pressure on him then he was already doing to himself.

If you want 'someone who makes contact' in the leadoff spot, I'm not sure that Royo would be the right guy.

He has struck out more times in SEC play than anyone on the team, 31 times in 78 official ABs.

Wouldn't mind your lineup either but I think we need to get Sorrell as many ABs as possible. He's our best hitter and seems to have the clutch gene.
Definitely like Sorrell at 3. Maximize his rbi potential while maximizing potential at bats. Like the idea of Henseler at two. Tossup at lead off, but I'd probably stick with TKs speed in hopes he finds his stroke again (which he will)

I don't support ever letting your best power hitters bat lead off. They should bat 3, 4 or 5.

It's not the old school way but I mean it's not like it's exactly unprecedented... the Dodgers, which I hate nearly as much as I hate the whorns, even do it with a once in a lifetime type generational talent.

Some use on-base percentage as a factor in determining lead-off hitter.

In SEC play, our two leaders are Bear (.447) and Jace (.446), Royo is .306.

Lineup variations is an interesting topic. But man.....we can only hope that Jace breaks out of this slump. Last 7 games, he's 2-27 with 12 Ks (4 BBs) and 1 RBI. I'm starting to wonder if he's injured in some way. Maybe his hand is still hurt from the Sam game?
I know - no one has asked that question either.

Jace at leadoff only makes sense if he occasionally lays down a bunt to force teams to play him more straight up.

I agree.. which I hate.. so don't lead him off. Shohei can lead off because he can hit to every part of the field (even though he does pull a lot, he can 100% slap it the other way).

Jace would do well in the 3 or 4 hole because you likely have 1-2 guys on that can force the defense not to shift so dramatically.

9. Kash 1B

I don't understand how TK went from 1 to 9 in the lineup. He is well suited for the top of the lineup unless he has fallen off the face of the earth recently in his swing selection.

Besides the first inning it's like he's at the top of the lineup. I'm sure that's why Earley did it.

Just bc we are playing Missouri.

Not bc it's a great strategy.

If he actually thinks what he's doing is a bad strategy and still does it. He's got issues.

I hope Jace adjusts. I don't hate it (see Otahni, Judge, etc) but I admit it's not my favorite, based mostly on last weekend though rather than not wanting the big guy leading off. He still has the best OBP of the all-year regulars.

Given the couple week funk he's been in, I wonder if Coach asked Jace his preference directly or how this went down. (Haven't listened just yet but will this evening)

He previously said that he put Jace as leadoff because he liked the idea of Sorrell being guaranteed an at bat in the first inning. I don't know if that was his primary reason or just a reason. He also wants to alternate left and right which I think proved valuable last Sunday when lsu switched out all of those pitchers for a matchup with Jace.

You could bat Sorrell 2nd, Wyatt 3rd and Jace 4th to guarantee that as well and alternate left/right

It seems to me that Coach views the lineup as more circular than linear. He made a comment in a presser a week or two ago that the leadoff batter is only the leadoff once per game.

Interesting

Someone said similar on the game thread, page 2 last week. Oh yeah, me.
