This year has been a huge step in the right direction, but we're not there yet. Going back to the last summer, I had some confidence the offense could turn around given Earley's track record as a hitting coach, but questioned whether we'd have enough pitching and that has definitely played out. I think the flaws with this team start with roster construction and not being aggressive enough in the portal to attract a few more high level arms.
Pitching staff is thin for sure thanks to injuries, the transfer from Baylor who had his offer pulled for off the field stuff, and the kid from FAU not being up to snuff. But there are no perfect teams out there. UCLA is probably the strongest all around and they're not undefeated.
Hell, they had a fairly long discussion on yesterday's broadcast about top national seeds and/or #1 ranked teams not making Omaha. Like Tennessee in 2022 or tu last year getting bounced in their own regional.
While last year sucked for sure, this team is showing what Earley can do with a healthy offense.
I have no qualms about the offense and think it is proving why Earley can be the long term guy. It's been as good and even better than expected even with Haco being out/ineffective for the past month and a half. It's scary (good) to think this offense has another level if we can get him going, Wilson continues to progress and TK gets going. I think this offense is better than 2022 and has a chance to slug the team to Omaha.
On the mound, while we've had setbacks, let's not act like we've had more negative variability than to be expected. You have to expect some level of injuries and lower than expected effectiveness. Our starting rotation has been largely what we expected going into the fall and currently has a conference ERA of 7.59 (starters only). At the close of the transfer portal, the expectation was our rotation would contain 3 of the following
1) A 2024 starter, that was off for a year recovering from TJ
2) Effective long reliever that had been brilliant in spots, but not in a starting role
3) One of the rising sophomores elevating their game (Sims, McCoy, Lyons)
4) An ACC long reliever transfer
Let's not pretend like pitching depth wasn't a concern going into the fall. See discussions
here and
here. We needed 1 more proven weekend rotation guys and ideally another you expected to compete for the job that you could depend on in long relief/Tuesday if they didn't win the job.
The year isn't over and we could get to the top of the mountain with this team powered by an elite Earley offense, but the sub-par pitching was entirely predictable going all the way back to the summer.
