Staff: If a thread on general speculation isn't warranted/welcome, then please delete.

I am very curious about this meeting. Every new update has been more and more about meeting in smaller groups, less travel, more forced closures, etc. I'm not sure what's left to update us on, other than a statewide stay-at-home or shelter-in-place type of announcement. Abbott already put us on lockdown orders until April 3rd, and now I'm wondering if this is the next logical step. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.politico.com/amp/news/2020/03/19/texas-governor-coronavirus-lockdown-orders-137691

Other states like California, Illinois, and Connecticut Have similar orders. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/2891193001

Wondering if that is what is coming next for Texas?

So far, our number of cases, and certainly deaths, is very small relative to population.

I sure hope he doesn't flip this switch as I don't feel it's warranted.

If they really want to do something, and this goes for the national government- shut down air travel.

The link didn't say anything about live streaming. Any idea on that?

Mayor Adler in Austin made a move to prohibit lines of people closer then six feet at the grocery stores. I could see Abbott declaring that, plus closing down some of the fringe industries that have stayed on (hair salon & nail salons in particular).

I think there are different 'lockdown' definitions being used that can cause some confusion.

Compared to Italy, Spain, even California, etc., Texas has not been 'locked down' yet.

The Spain and Italy version of 'lock down' for example is you won't be able to leave your house and move around without soon having police or National Guard stopping you asking what your essential reason to be moving around is, and if they don't think it is essential then making you go back in your home.

So a more restrictive version of 'lockdown' is certainly possible if they decide necessary.

No, but if they post one then I'll update and bump this thread.

I'm at HEB in Wimberley and one of the employees stated they are currently moving the line markers from 3ft to 6ft due to new state regulations

I'm hearing from my (usually quite reliable) sources that the Governor will announce a shelter-in-place similar to other states. No specifics and it wouldn't surprise me that our restrictions have some different nuances than others but that's what I'm hearing. Don't flog me if I'm wrong.

I personally hope he orders a shelter in place so that we can just bite the bullet and move on from this. I feel like this is a slow death. We dont want to be NY, I dont think we should have to wait until we have all those cases and hospitalizations before we act

Pretty sure we are already NY. They are testing far more people which is why they have a higher number of reported cases. I know people with symptoms or who have been exposed to people with positives that aren't allowed a test in TX.

Reading some of those orders I am at a loss. Politicians stating this can go on for months and at their discretion. That's a terrifying statement.

I know the Texas National Guard has been activated since Wednesday. They have not been mobilized. Yet.

Not yet, we're not. You can look at cases in hospital to know that. The issue, will we follow NY or have our own flattened curve.

Is Texas destined to be NY, Italy, or Spain without further lockdown procedures? If so, further steps must be taken now. I have no idea either way, but just saying our current number of deaths is low isn't the only factor to consider

At some point the people will push back. "Consent of the governed" might go away.

As far as timing. Friday TAMU System extended work from home till May 1. 6 weeks longer than was originally planned after Spring Break.

The Texas Department of Emergency Management is a big part of running the govt response in Texas. The Director of the Texas Department of Emergency Management reports to the TAMUS Chancellor because TDEM is part of the AM System.

Use logic to think about how, what, and why decisions are being made and you will quickly realize that April 3 is not going to signal an "all clear, back to work".

That's my thinking.

This has all been done in stages, with specific dates used as a holding pattern for future announcements.

By virtue of our useless public transportation and low density housing it's difficult to see anywhere in Texas coming that close to NYC or Milan. If the majority of people practice the proper protocols then the avenues of trandmission just won't be there.

A total lockdown feels like a massive overreach at this point.

Agreed. Although the suburban sprawl keeps the downtown area (DFW particularly) from thriving like other cities, it seems like it definitely should help right now. Even those still going to work are mostly commuting by themselves and not in a position to be as exposed as other major metropolitan markets.

That seemed obvious to me from the get go. There was zero chance that a 2 week period of laying low was going to do anything besides let decision makers know how much further they needed to restrict things in 2 weeks.

The NYC region also has an average of 3.4 available/unoccupied staffed ICU beds per 100,000. Texas has an average of 12.4 per 100,000.

They are already reaching the point where they start to push capacity. We have another 2-4 weeks for our social distancing and lockdowns to work.

But it's probably still coming. This feels like local Governments trying to "out woke" the other.

Yes, our Republican governor really cares about being "woke"

The reason he would do it is the data is showing more and more the earlier you lock it down the quicker it flattens the curve. Most of Europe waited too late, waited until 100s we're already dead. It gets exponentially worse once you're in it, and we're close.

What kind of restrictions would we be looking at then? I mean, pretty much everything is closed anyway. Close down the drive-thru options? Close Targets and Best Buys?

I just returned from the HEB in dripping springs and there is clearly no 6 foot ordinance in place. It was pretty calm but I saw people clumped together in the produce and bread isles reaching over each other

Wouldn't be much different than now. Restaurants and liquor stores still able to do take away.

Shuts down businesses though. Prevents gatherings, you are ordered to stay at home with some exceptions.

Wife and I were thinking the same thing. He needs to wait until Monday so I can make one more liquor store run.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

Liquor stores will remain open, they're open in NYC.
