I would contend that animals act on instinct; human often on emotions (based on instincts).

That might be true. But those of us that have evolved act on logic over emotions.
If that is the case, I would rather be an underdeveloped human rather than a Vulcan. . . or a psychopath.

So my wife is a teacher. She is the GT teacher for a few campuses in Frisco. Being in Frisco, she has been mandated with virtual learning. However, the teachers must be on site to administer their curriculum.

The kicker is that we have two school-aged children that also have to be available for online learning. So what are we supposed to do with our kids? How can my wife guarantee providing a solid educational effort while also making sure my first grader is available to complete her assignments?

This situation is not as simple as keeping people safe. It is really affecting people's livelihood. And it goes back to my original post on this thread - lots of people have had to sacrifice during this episode. Many have lost jobs and are in a tough economic spot. To this point, we've allowed the teachers to coast (for the most part - I know a lot of teachers that half-way did the online learning last semester), but its time to step up.

Cooks Children released their recommendations (50 doctors contributed) and it is very similar to the Canadian pediatrics one. They did touch on alternating schedules and how they should be avoided. From what I gather they are recommending in school classes. After reading the Cooks and Canadian pediatrics recommendations it seems like the county health officials are doing the exact opposite on several things the doctors recommend.

Cooks Children reopening schools

Quote:

School schedules that attempt social distancing by reducing the number of students on-campus, such attending on alternate days, is discouraged. The following considerations should be weighed before proposing such schedules because they can create:
Financial hardships for single parent families or for families in which both parents must work outside the home;
Misaligned schedules for large families decreasing parent financial productivity; and
Quote:

Online school for immunosuppressed students to learn and immunosuppressed faculty to teach should be increased. Online accommodations should be examined for students who are quarantined. Preparations should be made in the event of an abrupt return to distance learning. On-campus or alternative site video education for students in home situations that cannot support distance learning should be available. Special education teachers should be proactively engaged to accommodate students with special needs in distance learning activities.

CDC Director: "Absolutely" I'd Send My Grandchildren Back To School In September

Quote:

"I think it's really important to get our schools open," he said. "It's not public health versus opening the schools or the economy it's public health versus public health. I think there really are a number of negative public health consequences that have happened to our K-12 [students] by having schools closed."

Having online only is racist.

Latest from CDC is that schools should be open with food and phys ed included.

"The best available evidence from countries that have opened schools indicates that COVID-19 poses low risks to school-aged children, at least in areas with low community transmission, and suggests that children are unlikely to be major drivers of the spread of the virus. Reopening schools creates opportunity to invest in the education, well-being, and future of one of America's greatest assetsour childrenwhile taking every precaution to protect students, teachers, staff and all their families."

If schools close down this year and go online. I hope this ends public schools forever!

Random question: Does anyone with smaller kids see them "talking to themselves" more than in the past? My 7 yr old plays his video games and acts like he's playing against someone, shouts out "good move" , "way to go" or "No, don't do that!" like he's playing with someone. Kinda sad actually.

When he starts carrying on conversations with himself I'll get real worried!

Does he watch others play on YouTube or Twitch? Several months ago, my son started acting like a crazy YouTuber when he plays. Over the top reactions and odd word choices (not bad language just words or turns of phrase you wouldnt expect from a kid).

Haha mine do this too. My daughter will get my phone and record videos of herself showing people how to do stuff. (She's 7).

Yep, that's probably it then!

I can't wait to get him away from all that, get him in class.

I have a 7 year-old daughter and a 10 year-old son. I have definitely noticed changes in them over the past 5 months of limited activities with friends, spending almost all day in the house. Their sleep habits have changed, they are more apathetic about things they used to get excited about.

My son 6 months ago was very social...ALWAYS combing the neighborhood for anyone to play with. Now, when he gets an opportunity to play with others, most of the time he's "Meh. I'd rather practice my WWE moves on the trampoline by myself."

My daughter loves school and seeing all her friends. She started bawling when she learned we had to do online learning for at least three weeks (Katy ISD). She absolutely gets nothing out of online learning.

Every day is basically the same for them now, and has been for 5 months. I worry that they are forever going to be changed psychologically by this insanity.

Yeah, we were lucky and were given a trampoline in April (family with graduating childen moving), and my kid was all over it for a while. Now, we have to force him to go out there. Why? He says it's "boring jumping by myself all the time".

I wonder the same thing.

One of my kids is a 6 year old boy. His behavior has regressed a lot. It seems like stuff that would've bothered him before the pandemic now makes him throw tantrums and legit ugly cry...almost like he's 2 or 3 years old again. I wonder if he's just feeling a bit depressed.

Seeing my son's regression has been very disheartening. He entered kindergarten last year, and the strides he made between August and March made him look like a totally different person. I feel like there's been a huge regression. 5 months can be gained again, but how long until things may be permanent? I'm hoping that he's young enough that this won't have lasting effects, but this school shutdown could really screw up an entire generation of kids.
