Odd, FDA hasn't approved any of them and doesn't have the meeting to do that scheduled until mid Dec.

I'm at another large system in the TMC and we are meeting next week to discuss rollout. I have heard similar rumors that we will start offering to employees working our Covid units in the next week or two.

Seemed like the timeline for official vaccine shipping was week of the 14th. I think the FDA meeting for Pfizer is scheduled for Dec 10, with CDC saying they could meet for final approval of the roll out plan on Dec 11. CDC can't meet final approval of the roll out until FDA approves the vaccine. Pfizer has said they could ship with 24 hrs hours of approval. But that is closer to 3 weeks.

It makes sense to roll out to frontline healthcare even if it is a week or two before official approval. But everyone flipped out when Trump suggested that could happen. LOL

Also, Pfizer was starting a pilot distribution in several states including Texas. Looks like the dry run in vials that don't contain the vaccine. Guess they want to make sure they stay cold enough.

My FIL is 82 with diabetes and wants to take it. Anyone hear how he gets on a list? Goes through his primary care doc?

Just received an email from one of the PIOs at the PD stating that Covid vaccines will be distributed throughout Texas later this month, and that as frontline workers we will be expected to be among the first to receive the vaccine.

Have to admit, that time frame is substantially ahead of any schedule I had anticipated.

Rollout begins week of Dec 13th in many (all?) states.

Sounds good to me. Just makes me think this December 10th "decision" by the FDA is all for show and should have probably been done earlier. But it's still well before what I had in my mind as a best case date. I was really not counting on it being available before the spring time.

I'm scheduled to get mine on 12/17, but the first day available was the 16th.

FDA meets Thursday. CDC supposedly has to meet after (Friday?) to approval final distribution plan before shipments can start. I don't get why that can't happen before, but I guess technically can't approve distribution until FDA approves vaccine.

Unless Pfizer has prepositioned vaccine for same day delivery, I'm guessing Saturday is probably more likely.

Pfizer already has pre-positioned the vaccine with shipments to hospitals already arranged. The only thing that would get in the way is if the FDA unexpectedly does not give EUA.

I work at a hospital and we are supposed to receive a shipment on Friday. Obviously we cannot administer until EUA, etc is granted but it will be on site.

So the vaccine that is rolling out here in a week or so..... this will be the Pfizer version? Or is Moderna possibly hoping to have the EUA by then as well?

They are telling us they will start the vaccination program next week. Not mandatory.

So far I've talked to very few nurses who are willing to take it. My guess is only 10 to 20% of us will get it. I'm going to go ahead and volunteer to do it.

My wife is an NP at MDA. She's scheduled for the 18th. They're getting 4,800 doses this week or early next week.

There are no concerns that the FDA doesn't grant emergency use later this week - especially with the UK's approval.

That's a bit surprising to me. HepB and flu shots are mandatory at our hospital and most places for clinical staff. Why wouldn't the COVID vaccine be? Especially with all the staffing issues everywhere

Random question: after your final shot of two how long until you don't have to wear a mask anymore?

Seems like an easy carrot to dangle to get people to take it who might not.

There is a lot of concern about mRNA. Some are taking a wait and see approach until more information is available. I had a CNA told me she would never get the vaccine because she believes the Bill Gates conspiracies. Most of my coworkers who are adamantly against it are the ones who would suffer the most if they get it, morbidly obese and older.

A survey was sent out a few weeks ago trying to gauge how many people would be willing to take it, and apparently the percentage was pretty low. The concern is if they made it mandatory a lot of people would quit.

We've been very fortunate in that we have not had significant hospitalizations among our staff and no staff deaths. That probably plays a factor in that most of us don't know people who have been seriously impacted on a personal level. Most of our staff to have gotten that have shaken it off pretty quickly.

There is going to be a higher demand than supply for possibly years. This BS about needing proof to go places is silly for that reason. As well as the fact those that have had it should be at the bottom of the list.
Why would someone that has had it get vaccinated?
It's actually good to go ahead and get the vaccine if you've had it, as it can theoretically act as a booster and inoculate one further for the future.

It's not going to happen, but it would be really really bad. For one thing, something would have to be terribly wrong with the vaccine for the FDA to say no at this point. Since the Moderna vaccine is the same technology it would probably put that approval at risk too.

The stock market would crash, and we'd be looking at a nationwide lockdown in February.

That's shocking to me. My interactions are more with public health representatives than actual frontline medical, but most of them are completely onboard with the Pfizer/Moderna vaccines (pending FDA approval).

FDA set the meeting for Moderna review on the 17th I believe (or there about). That puts Moderna about a week behind Pfizer.

I would say for starters, limited quantities. Better to get it to those who want it faster than to force it on those who don't.

Also, this gives the individual the option to say I already had COVID and don't need the vaccine, whereas mandatory would be giving vaccine to those that don't need it making those that do wait.

Just to reiterate:

Many vaccines use live attenuated viruses, while some others use a carrier virus. In both cases, the vaccine virus infects some of the cells. At this point, the virus forces the cell to make the mRNA and then make the protein using the mRNA as instructions.

mRNA vaccine skips the first steps of infecting the cell with a virus and making the mRNA. Once the mRNA is there, everything else (making the protein and the immune response) is the same.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about mRNA being able to change your DNA or "programming your cells to make the antibodies". The mRNA vaccine includes the mRNA for the spike protein of the virus, just like the mRNA produced by the virus. And while HIV and some other viruses have the ability to make DNA from RNA, human cells don't have that ability, and even then, that is done from genomic RNA of the virus and not mature mRNA which includes some modifications so the cell knows this mRNA is for making proteins.

Can I get a tldr of the process to get from -90c freezer to my arm? I am assuming they aren't just pulling it out of the freezer and injecting it like they would for something kept in a fridge.
Feel free to skip the last mile delivery and assume it is at the injection site.

The hospital will thaw the vials, dilute to the right dose and store at 4 degrees. Then they will use all the thawed vaccine in the vials that day.

It's stable for 24 hours in a regular fridge.

There is an episode of PODCAST-19 that talks about covid vaccine distribution that hits on this. I think that the bottom line is that once unrefrigerated, the vaccine has a finite life of one week. Therefore, you're on the clock to use all the doses as long as you don't refrigerate it again. Therefore, it doesn't seem like there's a need to bring it from freezer to injection so fast, there's plenty of time to let it get to room temperature. Just can't let it sit out a week.

I should note my reply is with the Pfizer vaccine in mind. Modernas is stable at warmer temps.

Honestly both are probably stable at room temp. Stability studies take a lot of material and many months to run though (and redesigning formulation to increase stability is a two year project). Nobody has time for that so they'll just go with ultra cold for now.
