seeing a few friends that have received and/or scheduled to receive vaccine well before I would have figured (non essential, under 55, no comorbidities, etc)

I was not expecting a perfect rollout but I thought it would be pretty easy to figure out who should be in phase 1 and 2 (medical, first responders, elderly, etc)


Also, my company is considered essential (l also travel). I have at least one comorbidity. Do I contact my primary care doctor to inquire when the vaccine might be available to me or do I contact someone else?

There have been 2.13 million doses of vaccine administered as of this afternoon (https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/covid-vaccine-tracker-global-distribution/), I'm sure there will be some people that sneak through. Sometimes it's because of influence, sometimes because of luck, and sometimes it's because there's extra dosage than anticipated (either b/c people declined or no-showed), and they open it up to other folks.

This is a pretty unprecedented endeavor. If we wanted a perfect rollout we should've started making a prioritized list a month ago and set up vaccine distribution sites under a central authority. But two months ago, no one would've thought we'd be where we are now.

I'm too in awe of what all just happened in less than a year to complain about a few people getting their vaccine a little early.

Agree with being in awe of the entire accomplishment. I just hope what I have seen is, like you said, a few one off instances.

The wife reports every few days on FB updates from people who get the vaccine. Oddly enough she has seen pharmacy workers, phycologist or psychiatrist don't remember with one, an ophthalmologist and a dermatologist. Not really front line workers at all but somehow made it to the front of the line.

We were able to get my grandmother on a list to get hers in the next few days. The attendant on the phone said it's a 7 page list but they make it through a page or two a day and have to move on to the next name on a list when people don't answer their phone call, so overall it sounds like a very fluid pecking order as they try to not waste anything.

There is going to be plenty to go around. I doubt anyone who needs it will be denied. The folks I have heard of that got it "early" were taking advantage of excess doses & no-show doses about to expire.

I think you can make a case for those, especially the ophthalmologist who has to get all up in peoples' faces. Get the people who come in contact with a lot of people, and you can minimize them catching it from someone who has it and spreading it to others. While I agree that front-line workers should be a priority (and at most hospitals, they are), I think it makes some sense to vaccinate others who see multiple patients or customers a day.

given the number of doses coming down the pipe and the number of healthy people not wanting to get a shot right now (it would shock you the proportion of even frontline HC support staff not excited to get it), I figure supply won't be a huge issue by March

I received the vaccine and I am not a frontline worker, but work for a group affiliated with a hospital. Randomly received an email asking me if I wanted to sign up for the vaccine with available time slots. There were far more open slots than taken slots. I bet if you polled 10 people, 4-5 would say they would not take the vaccine if they were offered it.

My other theory is that the hospital thawed out a bunch of vaccines and didn't have as many takers, so they had to open it up so that they didn't trash all the unused vaccine.

one I know of is a stay at home mom (husband is a doctor) and the other is the wife of a traveling salesman for a fortune 500 company.

Same question. I took a look at the HEB pharmacy page, and it doesn't seem they will take appointments outside of 1a until 1b starts

I've heard when they open a bottle of the vaccine it has a certain number of doses that must be used in a short timeframe. If there aren't enough patients that meet the current guidelines, they may get flexible in who they give it to just to use up the bottle. Could be just rumor though.

They have a separate list: the "can you be here on 10 mins notice" list. When the inoculations are about to expire, they use this list. It has nothing whatever to do with need status; just your availability at a moments notice.

It is shocking the level of micromanagement some people are expecting on this inoculation program. The goal is to get as many shots in as many arms as possible.

The mother of my younger son's best friend is a family medicine doctor in Dallas. Neither she or any of her staff have gotten the vaccine yet. But, the athletic director and other school administration higher-ups at the private school her kids attend have gotten the shot.

my wife got vaccinated and they told her to call me to come down. then her parents were vaccinated - all within an hour. they said her parents got the last two they had that day.

I did. She got an email saying to go to A clinic to get it and she did.

We called the local Brookshires and a family clinic in a neighboring town and applied to both lists. They're focused on medical providers and nursing homes, but said they do have openings become available -- we understood it to be because they want to use all of the thawed vaccine before it spoils and cycle through the call lists.

One location said they received 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine and they were already all spoken for by nurses driving an hour and half out of Dallas, the other was happy to add to the list but made no guarantees on timing.
