Do you know which HEB this was? Been calling around all morning looking for a vaccine for my dad who's high risk. This might be super helpful! Thanks

I talked to her this morning and she said she called over but they were very busy. They live in Salado and had 500 doses which really surprised her given how small of a town it is.

HEB at Tower Point told us today that they haven't received any vaccine for 1B and weren't making a list. Our PCP from St Jo's has no idea when she'll have any available. Walgreen's said 1B vaccine would be available in April (!!!!)

It's actually quite a bit of work to track down the people on any "back up" list within a short amount of time. Many don't answer, others can't make it that day, and others say they can make it but never show up. You can spend a lot of time and make very little progress trying to track people down. As a consequence, it winds up being more efficient to just give the extra doses from all of the no-shows to the people that are in the right place at the right time. For example: You are a healthy 35-year old and take your 90-year old grandma to get the vaccine. They are running out of time with thawed doses. "We're about to have to throw these out. Do you want to go ahead and get it too?"

Honestly at this point they should just give it first come first served. Trying to plan the rollout based on complex tiers and getting everyone slotted into the right risk group is failing. From a public health perspective, getting the most people vaccinated the most quickly is the answer we need now.

There have been 2.13 million doses of vaccine administered as of this afternoon (https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/covid-vaccine-tracker-global-distribution/), I'm sure there will be some people that sneak through. Sometimes it's because of influence, sometimes because of luck, and sometimes it's because there's extra dosage than anticipated (either b/c people declined or no-showed), and they open it up to other folks.

This is a pretty unprecedented endeavor. If we wanted a perfect rollout we should've started making a prioritized list a month ago and set up vaccine distribution sites under a central authority. But two months ago, no one would've thought we'd be where we are now.

I'm too in awe of what all just happened in less than a year to complain about a few people getting their vaccine a little early.
Any idea why we are so behind projections in terms of numbers vaccinated thus far? It's alarming the very slow rate compared to other countries we are at.

perhaps because we started a few days before Christmas and that's possibly the worst timing ever.

The UK also was a week ahead of us in terms of approval. Their first vaccination was on 12/8, ours was 12/14

Yeah, the holidays don't help things. But also we're a massive country compared to either Israel or the UK. We're sending shipments of a few hundred to a few thousand to 50 states, however many territories we have, plus our overseas military bases. Each state has their own distribution plans as opposed to Israel and the UK which have a national plan.

I'd imagine if we tried a single unified national plan we'd have people complaining that we should've left it to the states.

And then quite a few people are declining the vaccine, which leaves hospitals scrambling to find replacements. I know I got my vaccine a week or more earlier than expected because enough people declined it ahead of me.

Small towns, and places without ultracold storage have to rely on the Moderna vaccine instead of the Pfizer (which was approved later).

I don't think people started planning early enough on the logistics of how to distribute the vaccine. I think a plan should have been in place in November, and a prioritized list ready before hospitals even got the vaccine. We only started making a list in the second week of December.

Lots of variables. Everyone wants to blame someone or something, and yeah, this could've gone a lot better, but as someone said, even the best plans ho to hell as soon as boots hit the ground.

personally, I expect a rhythm and a momentum to develop over the next month

we're a giant ship at sea. it takes a while but when we get turned in the right direction all this in-the-moment hand-wringing will seem so distant.

reminds me of all the criticism about testing availability early on. give it a sec.

that said, I don't buy the argument coming out of the feds that Americans would be too freaked out by the military to have them dispense vaccine. they could certainly be a part of the rollout.

I agree entirely with this.

It's taking the system some time to get the initial kinks out but before we know it things will be humming along, especially in the big cities.

I tend to think that after the new year holiday is done vaccine distribution and throughput will be sorted out relatively quickly. Lots of hiring is still needed and more broad spread availability of actual vaccine, not just locations to get it.

The testing debacle early on is a great example of how the system bottlenecks with not enough resources when dealing with surge demand. Hopefully it provided learning lessons for this next phase.

getting private business to do all the work is ultimately more efficient but requires more time on the upfront

you could parallel with top down federal/state direct action as a bridge but that might be more confusing and they opted to not for what I guess is good reasons

centralized vacc locations would be faster in getting jabs in arms but would have there own logistical problems (parking, crowding, long lines during a respiratory spread pandemic). even if jabs were drive through it would be a nightmare with that queue.

there's no free lunch here.

According to Collin County Health, they don't have vaccines available to the public or for healthcare workers. The map coordinated by the state says they have the vaccine. What are they doing with it? Any ideas?

"For healthcare workers who wish to receive the vaccine, please speak to your employer regarding their vaccination plans. For healthcare facilities who wish have their staff vaccinated, the following options are as available:
  • Contact your parent hospital to request to be included in their vaccination plan.
  • Register to become a provider of the COVID-19 vaccine for your staff, patients, and/or community. You can find information on the necessary steps to enroll at the DSHS website by clicking here. The minimum quantity of vaccine that can be received as a provider is 100 doses. If you do not have 100 staff members or patients to vaccinate, it is recommended that you find other facilities in similar circumstances and register together.
  • Find a pharmacy or clinic that is already registered as a vaccine provider that is able to vaccinate your organization."

They're most likely giving their doses to Collin County employees.

A friend just shared the text of an email sent from Collin County Judge Chris Hill:

If you meet the definition of Phase 1A or Phase 1B (established by the Texas Department of State Health Services), you are eligible now to receive the vaccine. Click the links above to read the DSHS definitions. Please remember there is currently a very limited supply of the vaccine.
Where can I get the vaccine?
Visit the Texas COVID-19 Vaccine Provider Locations map to see providers near you who have received the vaccine. There is currently a very limited supply of the vaccine, so call ahead to see if your provider has vaccine supply available for you.
Does Collin County Health Care Services have the vaccine?
Collin County Health Care Services received 1,000 doses of the vaccine and the supplies that accompany the vaccine on December 28. The health department staff began administering the vaccine at 8AM on December 29.
By the end of today (December 31), the health department will have administered appproximately 525 doses, and it is likely that Collin County Health Care Services will be out of the vaccine early next week based on the current waiting list.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Collin County Health Care Services was limiting vaccine distribution to two groups:
1. Individuals who meet the DSHS Phase 1A definition; AND
o are employed by Collin County Health Care Services or a small city in Collin County that did not receive any vaccines; OR
o serve in the Collin County Medical Reserve Corps or a volunteer fire department in Collin County.
2. Individuals who meet the DSHS Phase 1B definition; AND
  • are employed by Collin County, the North Texas Municipal Water District, or a small city in Collin County that did not receive any vaccines, OR serve in a volunteer fire department in Collin County; AND
  • have been designated as critical to ongoing operations by their respective organizations.
As of this morning (December 31), Collin County Health Care Services began offering the vaccine to any person in Collin County that meets the DSHS definition for Phase 1A or Phase 1B. Appointments are being scheduled in the order of inquiry, including those individuals who called or left a message on the vaccine appointment line (214-491-4804). At this time, there are over 700 persons on the vaccine waitlist.
Collin County Health Care Services has not been provided a timetable for future doses, but will resume vaccine administration as soon as additional doses are received.
Visit the Collin County website for additional updates as they become available. You can reach the Collin County Health Care Services vaccine appointment line at (214) 491-4804.

The wife reports every few days on FB updates from people who get the vaccine. Oddly enough she has seen pharmacy workers, phycologist or psychiatrist don't remember with one, an ophthalmologist and a dermatologist. Not really front line workers at all but somehow made it to the front of the line.
You do realize that pharmacy workers are specifically listed in group 1A, as are "outpatient healthcare workers".

I've heard when they open a bottle of the vaccine it has a certain number of doses that must be used in a short timeframe. If there aren't enough patients that meet the current guidelines, they may get flexible in who they give it to just to use up the bottle. Could be just rumor though.

This is definitely happening in smaller pharmacies and clinics.

Gotcha. There's been a couple posts in here with success for 1b folks. Seems it's so variable across the board I wouldn't be surprised at much.

My parents (66) were able to get an appointment before my grandmother (83 and in LTC). It's all over the place.

I had a window visit with my 83 year old mother at her skilled nursing facility on Christmas Eve and learned her roommate had been transported to the hospital with Covid. Mom tested positive 5 days later, along with several other residents that are now on the facility's quarantine wing - or at the hospital. The administrator "hopes" to receive the vaccine for residents in a couple of weeks. WTF? Watching and reading news reports about the dysfunctional rollout is rather upsetting.
