How did the Oregon men's formchart total stay the same? Mike Berry was predicted 2nd in the 400 and he failed to make the final? They didn't pick up any new finalists against the chart as far as I can tell either.

Why can't track go to an "A" and "B" cut system like swimming uses where you can qualify for nationals with times from meets during the season. This would allow for injuries to heal for individuals already qualified, and for the conference champ and regionals to be used as both a warmup and a "last chance" meet to qualify. This would get rid of the East/West regional discrepancy too as you qualify against national times instead of regional. Or just get rid of the regionals and use conference champ meets as the last chance to qualify.

quote:
Ashton Purvis finished 10th, Olivia Ekpone 11th, and Ashley Collier 12th and did not advance.

And all had faster times than the 8th qualifier. I understand the rationale behind the heat winner + fastest times, I'm just not sure I agree with it. There were in fact 4 times faster than the 8th qualifier, and 4 of the 8 qualifiers came out of Jennifer Madu's heat.

It won't surprise me to see a similar thing happen in the 200m. There are 3 heats, we have Brown and Purvis in the same heat, along with Gardner from Oregon and Duncan from LSU. Speed seems to be concentrated rather than spread evenly through the heats. Random draw - I know. I think they should be seeded.

Hotard,

It used to be that way, and still is for Indoors. There was an A Standard (Automatic Qualifier) and a B Standard. I like that system better. You have an entire season to prove you belong instead of one meet (regionals). With an A & B system, you get the best of the best from the whole season at nationals. With a regional system, you get only the people that performed the best on one specific weekend.

The indoor system is very flawed because of the differences in tracks. It is a huge advantage for schools that compete at A&M, Nebraska, Birmingham, Notre Dame and Washington. Indoors would be perfect for regionals because of that disparity. Outdoors the most sense would be to use the conference championships as a means to advance just like they do with conference tournaments in basketball, baseball and softball. Gary Wilson from Minnesota had a great plan that had the support of the collegiate coaches and would have accomplished that. The NCAA is committed to this regional concept despite its many flaws. I don't like it but I don't think it will change.

Things look very good for the Ags after the first day of the meet. The men took care of business and leading challengers had major slip ups.

Since we are waiting for results today and exploring the non-regional qualification options (which apparently the NCAA will not accept), how do you make up for track speed disparities and the one-time wonder times. If you have an A or B qualification standard, do you have to meet it at more than one meet or at designated meets? I still remember the Tech team several years ago coming in with several "best in Big 12" times and most of them not even making the finals. It turned out all the times were at a Lubbock meet with extremely favorable conditions.

Love the discussion. Thanks in advance.

halco87 - I screwed up! For some reason I failed to add into my results the MEN’s 400m race. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Let me make some corrections. I will review everything while I am at it.

Aggies in Today’s [Day 2] Events:

MEN:
200m: Ameer Webb, Prezel Hardy, Michael Bryan
110H: Wayne Davis
4x400:
Ameer, Wayne, and the relay team should advance. Hardy and Bryan advancing would be extra.
We desperately need at least 25 points from this group Saturday.

WOMEN:
200m: Kamaria Brown, Ashton Purvis, & Olivia Ekpone
100H: Donique Flemings
4x400:
Kamaria, Donique, and the relay team should advance. Ashton and Olivia advancing would be much needed extra.
At least 15 points from this group Saturday would be great!

Since most of our points come from running events, at the end of today the MEN will still have zero points and the WOMEN only one.

Regarding standards to qualify for events such as “A” Standards and possibly “B” Standards, some competitions have such [e.g., college indoor track as previously mentioned]. As far as I know, these standards have only a one-time requirement. The Olympics have such a standard and imagine the differences in conditions (facilities, judging, etc.) at competitions around the world.

Unbelievably, Shelbi Vaughn made the US Olympic team in the discus throw while she was a high school senior. Unfortunately, she was unable to compete in the London Olympics because she had not met their qualifying standard.

MidTnAg - You are doing a TREMENDOUS job! Thanks for keeping the running tabulations and staying on top of the meet.

The men's meet is going to come done to two things (barring some unexpected failure to qualify): Can the A&M men who are favored to win events (Lelei, Davis, Humphreys, 4x4) do so and how many points will Arkansas get out of the long jump? I fully expect the title to be in play for the Ags come the 4x4. Florida's 400 guys look ready to run and challenge for that race title, don't be surprised if Ameer Webb is on that relay to close the meet if it's winner take all.

Regarding the Arkansas MEN, there is still a huge gap in the difference between their projected points based on the T&F Formchart and their projected points based on their Best Performances throughout the outdoor season. The gap started at 18 points [65-47 ---T&F points listed first]. After one day, it has narrowed some to a 15-point difference [58-43].

The Arkansas MEN are going to have to start eating their spinach or come down to earth with the rest of us. Let’s hope they don’t eat their spinach.

They do have a strong contingent of participants. They can still get about 30 points in the track events, about 30 points in the field events, and win this meet.

I think we are going to have some help from Arkansas for the MEN to win.

I hope the WOMEN finish at least 5th.

Dang that was a fast 200m for the women - all 8 qualifiers +1 under 23.0. Thinking back to 2010 when Porscha Lucas and Jeneba Tarmoh went 1-2, they were the only ones under 23. Kamaria Brown (2) and Olivia Ekpone (8) through to the finals.

Arkansas men first 2 long jumpers sit 2nd and 7th after flight 1. They have a 3rd jumper in flight 2.
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Arkansas long jump update: Tarik Batchelor, 4th on form chart, has fouled his first jump and passed his second in Flight 2 of long jump. Jerrion Lawson, 3rd on form chart, will not make final. Raymond Higgs, 8th on form chart, sits 3rd going into 3rd jumps of flight 2.

So Arkansas lost some points there, correct?

3 expected to advance by the Form Chart and only 1 does.
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Higgs has moved up, but yes they would lose 6 points to the chart even if he stays in 3rd. Their decathlete may pick up a few position points as well, so we won't know the full impact yet. However, Batchelor is also projected 2nd in the triple jump, and if he passed a jump that would lead me to believe something is not quite right physically.

Just got back to computer. How are we doing? The guys have got to win this meet. It is not often any team gets this close to a National Championship.

A NC is something every member of this team will be ecstatic about for the rest of their lives. Can you imagine the excitement and adrenalin they are feeling!

Thanks for the thanks. Ever since A&M hired Pat Henry, I have grown to be a hug AGGIE T&F fan.

You don't pass long jumps at nationals! You shouldn't anyway. Hope he continues to do so. That is very interesting. Wish we had a reporter there to pass info back to us.

We've qualified everything we supposed to qualify on both sides. Men's 4x4 still to come.

He's sprinter on the team. But confusing him with Wayne Davis would be like confusing Sam Humphreys with Wayne Davis.

Arkansas gets 2nd place points in the long jump. 8 for a net loss of 4 from the form chart. Their decathlete currently stands to pick up 2 points from the form chart. 10K on the track.

Arkansas does not score in 10K. Oregon finishes 6th.
