A repeat for those just getting here. National rankings, initial meet projections [how schools are listed], and final results tell how much better [or worse] than expected each top team did.

MEN:
Arkansas (#4) – 129 ---- 116.5
Texas A&M (#2) – 119 ---- 155 -- SEC CHAMPIONS!!! by a wide margin
Florida (#1) – 115 ---- 93
Georgia (#7) – 86 ---- 92
Alabama (#11) – 73 ---- 34
Kentucky (#19) – 64 ---- 65.5
Mississippi (#18) – 55 ---- 78
LSU (#9) – 53 ---- 43

WOMEN:
Florida (#1) – 136 ---- 116.5
Arkansas (#8) – 124 ---- 123
Texas A&M (#4) – 112 ---- 113 -- an injury and hurdle trip away from dual championships
Georgia (#5) – 88 ---- 70.5
Kentucky (#6) – 83 ---- 104
LSU (#7) – 80 ---- 65.5
Missouri (#13) – 57 ---- 62

MidTn. I sent a message on twitter to aggietrk asking for the splits. They posted it on twitter. I believe the 4x400m men could go under 3 minutes by time nationals. Both Shamier Little and Kamria Brown didnot run the 4x400m race either. Shamier had two hard races and we already could not have won the championship by the time 4x400. I was looking at the schedule at Nationals both 400m and 400m hurdles are on the same day so it would be tough for Shamier but the relay is on a different day. For Kamria Brown both the 200m and 400m are on different days so this works well for her if she is fully fit

See Pat Henry quote on Kamaria Brown below. He said she got a little hurt.
"On the ladies side Kamaria Brown didn’t run in the 200 or 400 today and that might have been 10 more points for us. That’s just the way it is, she got a little bit hurt during the sprint relay and we decided we couldn’t let her run in her open events.”

Oliva Ekpone With a time of 22.23 (-0.8 wind) has broken the A&M school record of 22.25 set by Simone Facey in 2008. Ekponé also bettered the SEC Championship meet record of 22.35 that was set by Debbie Ferguson of Georgia in 1999 as well as LSU’s Kimberlyn Duncan in 2013. This is tremendous. She must be the athlete of the meet. She should be place on the Bowerman List now

As I mentioned earlier in the blog that we have 5-6 sprinters who can reach finals or win the 100m/200m at NCAA. Can all of them perform great on the same day? That the big question. Ekpone did it at SEC, however Jennifer Madu, Ashton Purvis, Ashley Collier were disappointed but again they are very talented.

There are no last chance meet to qualify for Regionals.
Qualifying Period: The first date a qualifying performance may be achieved is March 1st. The last date a qualifying performance may be achieved is May 18th, and must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
SEC championship was the last chance to qualify for Regionals.

Aldrich Bailey is ranked 80th in the 200m and most likely not make regionals. Unless 30 plus persons doesnot declare themselves in the 200m. This is hardly likely although it is possible that some may pull out due to injury or the 200m was just a warm up event for the 400m.
The good news for Aldrich is that he is in the last and 48th qualifying spot in 400m. The drawback for him is that he will get a tough heat and also his lane maybe on the inside or outside. With 1 1/2 weeks to regionals, I think he will improve tremendously. He already ran a 45 plus split on the 4 x 400m relay.

Ashley Collier most likely will not make the 200m (79th). However in the 100m she is in 24th spot and would run at regionals.

Michael Bryan should still make it in both 100m (43rd) and 200 (29th)

From what I can remember, there have always been some last chance meets. Am I wrong?

MidTn. You are right there has always been a last chance meet. The change this year is that the last chance happen to be the championship weeekend for all the major conferences. There were some meets that were last chance last weekend for those who had their championship earlier this month. I think Georgia Tech has one last weekend.

The same thing happened with the indoors championship. The conference championship was the last chance to qualify.

There has been several thoughts on having last chance meets. They are both advantageous and disadvantageous. It can give you a last chance but i can also knock you out of the NCAA. I think several coaches who are not too much in favor of last chance meets including Pat Henry

Below is the first Form Chart that came out March 7th, 2014 showing 4 Aggie women were projected to be in the top 10 in the 100m and three in the 200m. Ashley Collier, Jennifer Madu and Ashton Purvis were all expected to do well in the 100m but has been disappointed so far this season. All three have now dropped out the form chart projection. Think about these three with Olivia Ekpone and Aaliyah Brown who are now in the top 10. As I mentioned earlier,on paper we have 5 women who can not only make the NCCA finals but win the 100m and 200m with Kamaria adding to the equation in the 200m.
I really hope they come good at regional and nationals because they are so talented. The preseason projections actually had Ashley Collier winning the 100m. In the 200m Ashton Purvis has dropped out the projection. I expected her to be fired up for regionals as all the Aggie sprinters

A lot of coaches, including Coach Henry, are not in favor of the regional format either, but unfortunately we still have them.

MidTn. You are right. Alot of coaches don't like the regionals.

If you are injured and cannot run regionals then you are out of NCAA championship. It is kind harsh because you may be the best in that event.

Another issue with regionals that I am seeing especially this year is that West Region is very loaded in the sprinters. So the top 12 from each event qualifies for NCAA but in the case of the West there are the Aggie women, Texas and Oregon. So an athlete may not make it out of the 100m from the West region but her time (times during the season) is better than some of the sprinters in the East region. The point is that one region or the other might have the best athletes in an event and some of them would not make the NCAA whereas weaker athletes in the other region make it.

How did the Texas women get so good this year? It seems they have been nowhere for quite a few years and now they carry the #1 ranking after Big12s?

Spice
They hired Buford-Bailey as assistant coach from Illinois University. Two of Illinois top athletes left to go with her to Texas. Ashley Spencer who is the reigning NCAA outdoor 400m champion. The other is Morolake Akinosun (sophmore from Ilinois), a sprinter who was recruited by the Aggies and committed to the Aggies and on signing day signed with Illinois citing she wanted to be close to home (Is she close to home now?. She is presently in the top ranking in both 100 and 200m.
Then there was another transfer. Kendal Baisden a top high school recruit in the 400m committed to USC and then transferred to Texas when Buford Bailey was hired.
Texas also had a couple good 400m runners in Courtney Okolo and Briana Nelson.
So Texas ended up with 4 top class 400m runners and a couple of good sprinters.

Not only did Texas get good athletes through transfers but they have performed exceptional well this season and that is why they are ranked so high unlike some of the Aggies sprinters who yet to find form this season.
Texas have 4 of the 5 top 400m times in the NCAA, 2 of the top 5 in the 200m and 1 in the top 5 in the 100m
