Yeah, hotbed of hockey up north. They will be fine on fans.

Too bad you never went to a playoff game at Reunion Arena. It was the best experience ever especially playoff games.

I can second that! Those Dallas Sidekicks games were a lot of fun at Reunion also.

I sympathize with y'all that are going to be negatively impacted by this move, especially if you decided to live where you do because of the Stars.

As a counterpoint, we live around Coit and Frankford and will probably make a ton of games now since it'll be right around the corner. The time commitment for us to go to and from the AAC just hasn't been worth it.

Really not trying to be an ass or rub it in. Maybe just showing an example of the other side of this decision.

ETA: just read the last page and someone else already made this point. Sorry for not reading first.

So what we're looking at 2029-2030 before either of these two arenas are ready right?

Believe the lease is up in 2031

I'm not going to pretend to know the details of the lease, but I'd bet money the Stars & Mavs find a way out early. Even if it means buying it out. If hockey is played at the AAC in 2030, I'd be shocked.

Don't like this at all. AAC is the only arena I've ever known.

I might get season tickets again for the first time since 2003. Living in Mckinney, I was not willing to drive to downtown Dallas after this 6 years that I had tickets. For every fan whose commute will get worse there is one for which it will be better.

but you lose the history of the franchise, these things matter

The most important history for the team was not in the AAC either. I miss Reunion and will never forget going to every game during those two Cup years and the couple of years prior where you could sense the momentum growing.

When Mike Keane scored that 3rd Goal in game 7 in '99 the damn building was shaking.

I believe the new president for the Mavs said they'd need 3 years for construction of the new arena. With how large of projects these will be, I'd be shocked if they started construction earlier than 12 months from now. So maybe they could play the season beginning in October 2030 in new arena? At the earliest?

I also have no idea how the lease works.

Well this officially sucks for me. I've had to cut back so much on live sports over the years, this may well be the final nail in the coffin in that regard for me. Guess I'll just try to enjoy the few years left of being able to go to a game.

It sucks they're leaving a perfectly good building. But if teams are going to move, they need to be on a rail lone or they need to develop a plan to get rail to it.

(Not just a Dallas problem; urban design sucks across all of Texas.)

I suppose the thought is the Arlington teams aren't affected by it, so why should the other 2 care?

I'm yelling at the clouds a bit, certainly. It's not any one of the teams' responsibility although I hope they will push for it to happen at some point.

(I will say the Cowboys/AT&T is different as they basically just host "big" events that are mostly on weekends. By definition it almost only hosts special events that have huuuuge demand.)

And even as an Arlington native that grew up at the Ballpark, I've never been under any illusion that it was a pain in the ass to get there for many and attendance probably suffered for it when they weren't particularly good.)

One thing I haven't thought all the way through is corporate purchases of suites and tickets.

I know a lot of companies have moved up north but there are a lot of very well off companies in uptown and surrounding areas who I'm sure have purchased suites that may not be as interested anymore.

Our company is located near love field and had a prime suite since AAC opened and zero chance we will be purchasing one for stars if they are at willow bend

My company has the half season, half stars/half mavs plan. They for sure aren't going to have season tickets to both after the move.

The tollway and 121 has practically become a new downtown + that entire tollway corridor is business dense

Love Field is 9.4 miles from Valley View vs 4 miles from the AAC.

That said, Willow Bend is 19 miles.

Edit: I see now that you were only talking about willow bend. Sorry, been reading both Mavs and Stars threads.

I gave my G7 tickets to a buddy because I was sick as a dog. Man I wish I had been there, but I did see some big games there. Reunion was way louder than the AAC.

All good my friend. Been an easy trip to jump on the tollway at mockingbird and make it to AAC in 10 minutes. Willow bend is a lot further obviously but even the valley view site I wonder about traffic and getting in/out

The traffic will be the worst thing about both locations. Ugh.

West Plano residents gonna be pissssed because traffic to the Costco right there is gonna be nuts.

Neither location is set up well for a 7pm, 15,000 car influx.

The one traffic advantage to AAc was for that time of day, not many people were exiting the tollway into uptown at 6pm. Everyone was leaving.

The locations in Plano and 635/galleria have constant traffic in all directions… all the time.

635 one is going to suck regardless.

I kind of feel for people right there at Willow Bend. There are people living in sprawling estates that are maybe 2 miles from that thing. NIMBY's about to come alive in Plano's city council meetings.

And tons of concerts! Wish I had bought a few seats after they demolished it, but they were padded indoor seats and I figured they'd be as gross as old movie theater seats.

Owners won't care. They want people to pay for parking. Not get there via public transport

I really hope that if there is a new arena, that they bring in the old fashioned organ for live music. There is just something about it and I'm sure they could come up with a mixture of organ and DJ stuff...

One of the only positives is that they will get to build a barn specifically for hockey, which I appreciate.

Yep, done right - which I expect them to - the end result should be a very good hockey experience for fans and the players. Our Texas weather will always be a challenge for the ice, but being able to fully gear the building for it should help. Being able to cool it and dehumidify it with the latest tech incorporated into the construction without having to accommodate constant conversions for basketball will help a lot. Sure, there will be some concert conversions, but it will be a ton less than AAC

Some good stuff in here about the vision for what the new barn will look like.

For those that don't X, it'll be more like Globe Life (although he said Jerry World, I pictured the Rangers with what he was describing), where fans can walk around and still be able to see the game from the concourse. I like that and it'll likely draw in more casual fans, but also loved the old Reunion days where it felt like fans were right on top of the ice causing havoc for the opponent (it was so freaking loud in there when things were going good).

Didn't realize cost is estimated to be $1 billion with Plano on the hook for $700 million.

Probably easier for Plano to justify since it is repurposing the old mall site, which would just deteriorate and get worse, but dang that is some $$
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes, they'll set up a special tax zone around the site that will be designed to pay off the bonds issued to fund Plano's part of it. Curious to see the details of what that means. That said, as mentioned, there are already challenges with Collin Creek, so I can see this being a logical solve for a budding Willowbend problem. And it's in the wealthiest part of town that would seem motivated not to have a dead mall blight in the midst of it. On the flipside, there are traffic headaches that will come with it

I hope they do it right, but as a fan who sits in the 300 level and stays glued to my seat, I have concerns.

Usually, new buildings are for premium experiences with little regard for the average fan.

The Rangers took a billion dollars and built one of the worst stadiums in baseball. I really hate Globe Life Field.
