Gladys Knight and Norah Jones both did excellent covers of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make it Through the Night"

oh for ****'s sake.

dave matthews band is majorly overrated and if you think their version of all along the watchtower even compares to jimi hendrix's, you're really quite pathetic in your knowledge of good music.
Plus Jimi's version is actually a Bob Dylan cover which no one seems to know. Which is why Jimi's All Along the Watchtower is one of the best covers of all time.

The best covers are the ones where the artist re-invents the song making it their own usually being better than the original. Some great examples would be..

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Jimmy Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Willie Nelson - Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain
Joe Cocker - Little Help from my Friends
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
Quiet Riot - Cum on Feel the Noize
Stevie Wonder - Superstition (Actually first recorded by Jeff Beck, but released first by Wonder)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Eric Clapton - I shot the Sheriff
Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
Aretha Franklin - Respect

Sublime: Scarlett Begonias
Gary Jules: Mad World
Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole: Somewhere over the Rainbow (if you can get over the American Idol BS)
Wilco: Handshake Drugs
Willie Nelson: Pancho and Lefty

..and of course
The Gourds: Gin and Juice

Handshake Drugs, while a great tune, is a Wilco original written by Jeff Tweedy. Not sure why you have it listed there.

The Nixons - Rocket Man

Saw them perform it live in downtown Bryan around 1997-98 and thought it was fantastic. They were a fun band to watch live.

Sturgill Simpson covering "In Bloom" by Nirvana.
Prince recently released his cover of "Creep" by Radiohead, it is so good it's insane. The guitar solo is incredible and Prince sings the song from a different point of view than Thom York.

even though its kind of jokingly, and the first to do the rock version of rap songs that I remember, this is how a cover should be. Not an exact rendition of it, but your take on it

Note: I didn't see that Mom the Meatloaf actually posted "I will always love you" covered by Whitney Houston.. so my weak second choice is

Shameless covered by Garth Brooks .. Shameless originally written and performed in 1989 by Billy Joel

Billy version peaked at #40 in '89 .. Garth version was #1 in '91..

Not sure how Stevie Wonder and the Stones cover their own songs.
Neck recorded Superstition and WA set to release it after working in Stevie's album but, as you said, Stevie released it first...but also wrote it.
Wild Horses was recorded by the Stones first...and written by them. It was only because of lawyers that they did not release it first.
Both were songs written for themselves...

Old Shade:

You are wrong.

Wild Horses is a Stones original. Parsons performed the cover, albeit before an official Stones release due to the many early 70s lawsuits.

Please amend your post.

A personal fave. As Paul Simon says, Elvis' rendition is a "touch on the dramatic side... but so Is the song."

"When I first heard Elvis perform 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, 'How the hell can I compete with that?"- Paul Simon
